Continuing with our 2 years of TestDrive celebration, we've filmed a brand new episode of TestDrive Spotlight on our own 2001 BMW 740iL.
This video is a full tour and review of the 2001 BMW 740iL E38 7 Series, going over all the features of our late production model cosmos black metallic paint on sand beige leather interior. This vehicle is equipped with bi-xenon headlights, park distance control (PDC, parking sensors), headlight washers, power folding mirrors, soft-close trunk, 6 CD changer, widescreen navigation, rear and side window sun shades, power moonroof, Motorola StarTAC phone, DSP (Digital Signal Processor), front & rear heated seats, interior chrome line trim, M parallel rims, sport suspension, rear self-levelling suspension, Steptronic transmission, and plenty of interior upgrades from the V12 750iL including B-pillar trim, C-pillar lights, wood map light trim, rear wood ash tray trim, and custom cup holders.

First off, it’s my car, so I’ll do whatever I want with it. The grille badge is an official badge from the BMW Car Club which I’m happy to show off. The ‘cheap plastic thingy’ is BMW’s Natural Air clip that keeps the interior fresh.

I've got the same air freshener and I wouldn't put anything else in my car. It's a damn BMW air freshener, why wouldn't you place it in your BMW. Cheers, love the way you take care of your 7 series.

His choice though something I would delete. I do like the extra options he has of parking sensors, B pillar trim, and heated seats. My 01 iL doesn't it have that though I have radar detector, bluetooth phone, XM/Siruis radio, rear view camera, and 9" DVD headrests. ;)

It can be your daily car too! For the most part these are affordable to pick up and the maintenance isn't that bad if you're able to do some of it yourself. Despite the few small problems we're hoping to work on, the car hasn't ever broken down on us, which is better than our previous 2 cars.

PRN exterior color is carbon Schwartz the interior seats are black with grey pipping on the edges, steering wheel is m style with grey stitching, door cards are full black leather and the floor mats are all valour. I'll send you some pics once the car is ready. The car is sport spec and it's currently being swapped into 6 speed manual.

I believe the first diesel was introduced here in Canada for the 2014 model year, the final year for the F02. There's a chance that someone might import one, and if we find one we'd love to film it!

Really appreciate your videos. Professional and comprehensive. Very few E38 footage out there. I've wanted a 750iL since 1989. Owned a 533i and E34 since. May have the chance to buy a `98 750iL in the next few months. Both the E28 and E34 have been costly to service and replace items. These all have inline-6s. I spent 4x what they were worth over 10 yrs. ownership. Any car you are passionate about will be costly. Best to get what you truly want, can afford upfront, and how it fits your lifestyle and connects to your soul. I remember when the E38 was launched.... a very exciting time. Tyring to locate some of my earlier design and test magazines from that era to motivate me more to save for this 750iL - which I plan on having it replace my E34 as a daily-driver.

TestDrive was essentially created because of the lack of E38 videos online. In the year leading up to my purchase I'd search endlessly on RU-vid for videos about these cars but never found anything I liked, and I wanted to address that once I got mine. If you can get your hands on a clean V12, do it! Prices for these have already started to creep up here in Canada, people are going to start to want them a lot more.

i have an E38 28I ,IT ROCKS PUREpower and 0 to 60 7 seconds and 150mph .all day stick to v6 728i .its fast enough .and quiet ,its pure bliss 1999. and its climbing in price now £4000, english .And it on 170,000 miles now purs like a cat .

My first experience inside a BMW was a oxford green E39 528i with the same interior colour scheme. Really was amazed back in the 90s jumping into that car. Probably why I have a soft sport for E38/9 interiors with the sand/beige interior.

G'day, I found your channel by chance, as I was looking at some old ads and promo videos on the E38s, I was considering getting a 740il 1999 black model. How much did you get yours for? I also noticed the Avant 4 or the MCMW Android units fitted for the E38, are you considering getting either one of these Android units to replace the old GPS? seems like a good idea, would like to see your future video about it, if you do ^_^

Hey there, I never did any modifications outside the OEM realm with this car, but I do know a number of owners have swapped in newer radio units without any real issues. There are a number of E38-enthusiast groups out there, on Facebook and various BMW forums. I'd check into those to see about any mods you might be interested in.

Hey PRN. Love all the woodtrim pieces you put all over it aswell as the glass sunroof. However, at 3:23 the dashtrim seems to be going off. If you go to e38 .org and scroll down to "Davids project notes" and 12th from the bottom there is a DIY on how to fix it on both sides with images. Love the videos. Bought myself an e38 3 liter diesel and so looking forward to upgrade the woodtrims and such.

That stupid bit of trim has always annoyed me, the fix looks pretty straightforward too, thanks for sharing! My hope is to eventually get a full leather dashboard, so if I do we'll definitely be fixing the side trim at the same time. We have a few interior fixes that need to be done, and these are definitely on that list.

I got a e38 730i about a month ago to replace my e46 320i. It might only be a 3L V8, but man does it get up and go when you press the gas pedal. The e38 is a great car no doubt! I have already made about 600km in it and has not let me by the side of the road.

I sure love mine, wish I pulled it out of the garage more :/ Even though I currently have 8 cars, all of them being European Cars, my e38 is still my absolute most favorite. We just got rid of our e66 and got a F02 750Li individual and that car reminds me a lot of my e38 but it still isn't the same.

We’re hoping to do some content on the F02/01 but finding owners are difficult. We filmed one briefly 2 years ago for our 7 Series Evolution vidéo but we didn’t have the chance to drive it. How was your E66? Did you replace it because of problems or just to upgrade to newer tech?

We didn't have to many issues. I think out of ordinary maintenance, the battery needed replaced once, the transmission gasket was replaced, and some iDrive malfunction, which BMW just has to reprogram. Other than that it was excellent, we owned it eight years and put exactly 100,000 miles on it. It was a good car, although it didn't win my heart completely like my e38, e39s, e60, and f02 have.

That tape player came in handy before upgrading to the iPhone 8+! I think it's one of the reasons why they hid it behind the screen with the facelift. I don't believe the E65 had a tape player anymore, even if you wanted one.

My first car was a 95 e34 525, put coilovers and powrerflex bushings on her, had 2 other e34s (a 525 non vanos and a 525 tds touring) and just picked up my second E38, had a 728 sport manual and fell in love and just picked up a 750iL.. the 34s since are in My opinion the best balance between pure drivning and comfort out there and the 38 are just pure comfort

Depends on what issues you're talking about, we've done a complete buyer's guide on this generation BMW 7 Series talking about the different engines and what to look out for with each type. Some feel the earlier ones are more reliable, others prefer the later ones. Ultimately comes down to what you feel comfortable with.

I feel these cars will appreciate in value over time, we’re already seeing that with the V12 models. I think as time goes on enthusiasts will appreciate the classic models more and demand will increase, especially as inventory decreases globally.

The new ones certainly have a lot of tech going on, but if you find one like this and make sure all the maintenance is kept up on it, you'll have a vehicle that rides and handles almost as well for a fraction of the price!

That might have been a misquote if we said that. E38's low beams are Xenon, high beams are regular garbage halogens.

We've been keeping an eye on the suspension, luckily the car won't be seeing anymore snow, and won't be coming out of the heated garage unless it's an emergency or the weather is great. We're going to need to replace the suspension components though, even if they haven't gotten too bad.

Hello! I need some advice for my BMW.I have a 725tds e38 01/97 and recently my Final Stage unit went Bad. So i changed it and with that i Used the opportunity to Change the IHKA unit aswell ( i changed from the e38 Analog/Digital IHKA w/ Rotary Fan Speed dials to the e38 Digital/Digital IHKA ). So as i changed the Blower Motor with the FSU and the IHKA unit, everything seemed to Work fine, the Lights on the IHKA unit are working all fine but when i click the Front defroster Button it works but it doesnt Blow trough the vents where it should be, instead it blows trough the Center dash air vents. Is there another Problem? After i researched in the Internet i suspect that it needs to be coded but im Not fully sure If thats really the cause. Thanks in advance!Lime

Hey there, we'd love to help but I don't think we'd be much use honestly. Have you looked at joining one of the various E38-oriented forums, such as bimmerforums.com? They have a very knowledgable community for the E38 7 Series and usually can help diagnose issues like this. They might have a better idea, since that's where we end up turning to when we have any issues with our car. Hopefully they can help you out!

I certainly do! Battery is dead again though, went to check it yesterday and couldn't get into the trunk. We're going to see if we can get something going on this, it's unlikely we'll get it on the road this year, but I'm hoping we can actually get some work done on it and provide some update videos on it.

We've done some videos on the custom cup holders if you check out our TestDrive Garage playlist. I don't believe the builder of them is making them anymore, they had a small run of them about a year and a half ago, but we've heard from other commenters that their eBay store is out of stock.

Ours has seen maybe 500km of driving since August. We need a new battery too, but there are other things on our list to fix before getting to that.

Where is a good place to find someone who can repair the cosmetics of the interior? The plastic portion of the drivers seat has come lose, the drivers arm rest leather is peeling, both side pillars (Seatbelt retention) are lose, the back left pillar over the rear passenger (light) have come lose. I tried pushing it back in place but "All" the interior parts listed still come lose. (2001 BMW IL)

Might be a hard business to find unfortunately. I imagine there are specialty shops like this, but you'd have to check around in your area to see if anyone specializes in interior trim and refurbishment.

It really depends on your situation. If you plan on working on it yourself then it could be. Also if you're going to rely on it daily for work you'll definitely want to make sure you're keeping it up to date for service.

In Japan they used them to line up the corner of their bumper when parallel parking, gave the driver a rough visual reference for the furthest corners of their car to avoid hitting anything.

bought mine less than a month ago and it already stranded me when the coolant expansion tank exploded. I would NOT take this car on a long drive if I can avoid it, and not wanting to break down again, I'm probably gonna sell it before I even register it and take the loss. These cars are ticking time bombs.

It definitely depends on the maintenance and condition of the car, however that's not always set in stone. We bought this car without any service history and the generic safety certificate which basically meant we went in without knowing anything. Aside from the leaking gas tank which is a rust issue, and the catalytic converters we repaired earlier in our ownership, we've never had any trouble. It's been more reliable than our old Honda.

It doesn’t depend on maintenance. Second owner here and the first owner treated this car as if it was a king. It still had problems. If you can get rid of it, I would. It’s a Sunday drive car not a everyday car due to the gas mileage and unreliability of it.

It was, yes! Just the first movie though, the subsequent ones switched to the Audi A8L, which is a car we've wanted to feature on TestDrive for many years now.

no the power windows n sun roof controls are the most common problems

There are certainly a lot of common problems with any older car.
