HP Umpire Alfonso Marquez ejected Diamondbacks 1B Christian Walker vs SF after Walker clapped in response to 1B Umpire Ramon De Jesus' "no swing" calls on check swings by Nick Ahmed. Walker earlier vocally disputed a "swing" call resulting in his strikeout. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2023/...

But I prefer the version of events that concludes with Arizona's organist causing the ejection by playing a clap prompt (the song is called La Raspa) as Walker clapped after the bunt/check swings during Ahmed's at-bat.

I mean 95% of ejections are extremely weak. Unless the Ump is shoved or there's a threat made, an Ump shouldn't be ejecting someone

For all we know, he could have been clapping because the batter successfully checked his swing on time on a pitch that he should not have tried to swing at. If we are ejecting players for congratulating the good actions of their teammates, then this league is certainly in trouble. I was always taught to never jump to conclusions.

There is an etiquette in baseball that is unlike any other sport. It can be extremely passive-aggressive at times. We don't get to see 99.9% of the interaction between players and umpires. Contrary to popular belief, umpires aren't flippant about ejecting someone. (Well, not as a rule, anyway.) They constantly get crapped on - all game long. There is zero grace given. You're everyone's best friend right up until you make a mistake. They put up with a lot that you never see or hear. He may have been legit applauding it, but it is also the behavior you'd expect (in this game) from someone who was continuing to express dissatisfaction at a call. That's what I mean about it being passive-aggressive. Umpires will listen to someone with a gripe, and they do it all the time with zero negative effect. But that doesn't make for a good RU-vid video, so you never see it. But when the call is done, and there is nothing more to be gained by talking, then it's over, and players know this. I understand the frustration people feel when they see these videos, but they really need a more complete experience. I wish they'd mic up an umpire for a few games and release it raw. No bleeps, no edits. You get to hear what they hear. I think it would greatly improve fan understanding of the subtle context behind many of these incidents.

"How do you know?" You don't, which is why the umpire shouldn't have assumed the worst. It is interesting that you compared this incident to the Joey Crawford ejection of Tim Duncan. Crawford is the son and brother of major league umpires, and was notorious for bringing an umpire's attitude onto the court. After the Duncan incident, Crawford got a (David) Stern lesson from the NBA. He was fined 100K, suspended for the rest of the season and playoffs, and underwent anger management counseling before applying to be reinstated. Lesson learned, Crawford calmed down considerably for the rest of his career. Commissioner Manfred dreams of having that much power over his game officials.
@LindsayImber1

@raf42
@raf42 Год назад
Lin's correct. It wasn't the ejection, it was the challenging a player to a fight. Honestly he might have been let go if not for the fact that he was a star ref who had officiated the last like 20 NBA finals at that point. Interestingly, while he was fined 100k, Duncan was fined 25k (which presumably mattered a lot less given their respective salaries).

I actually don’t even understand how that clapping could be interpreted as sarcastic. The 1B ump called a no swing on Christian Walker’s teammate - which is a good thing for them. So it’s natural to clap. Everyone claps when the ump says “no swing” on one of their teammates. However if the 1B ump had called it a swing and then Walker clapped right at the ump I could maybe see that as being interpreted as being sarcastic. But even that would be hard. Baseball players clap all the time in the dugout. They clap when something good happens and when something bad happens they clap to get their teammates going. And the video of Walker was so bland - he was just clapping normally. No over enthusiastic clapping directed at an umpire. So weird. Ump has rabbit ears and thin skin.

While I understand why Umpire Marquez made the ejection (clapping = showing up the umpire), you technically can't eject a player based on the clapping alone. As people pointed out, the clapping could be for a variety of reasons, such as celebrating the successful swing check. However, the persistent clapping told me that Walker was likely trying to show up the ump in this case. In this situation, I would call time after the second pitch and approach the dugout to give the warning to Walker, "Don't do it again". That would be the proper approach, instead of ejecting Walker without any due warning. If Walker continued with the behavior, THEN he would be ejected for insubordination. For the record, I would have ejected Walker BEFORE he returned to the dugout for the gesturing (showing up the ump) and the obvious verbal argument against the check swing call (can't argue balls and strikes).

Wow what a soft and pathetic ejection. Also, don’t be surprised when player comes out to argue after being ejected from the dugout. Managers do it all the time and players used to be able to argue for themselves. As long as they aren’t getting violent, they have every right to go out there and ask why they were ejected. Also, unless they say something personal, ejecting someone from the dugout should still be a no-no like it used to be. Marquez deserves to be fined and suspended, not Walker.
