Umpires react emotionally at anything they might possibly perceive as criticism but expect the players -- the ones with *actual* stakes in the game -- to be robots at all times no matter what happens. Walker was "gesturing and making comments" on the field, which means he was talking to his teammates and NOT DIRECTING THEM TOWARDS THE UMPIRES. Because if they were, you know damn well the umps would've specifically mentioned that.

Ever since the little white box, umpires calling balls and strikes has been unnecessary. Everyone watching on their screen, knows better what the real/fair count is. Umpires just get in the way with bad calls. They slow down the game and the best teams don't win. Maybe their friends have a little money on the game, Maybe someone needs a favour . . . No that would be wrong! Doesn't happen! Nothing to see here! Nothing their shrinking fan base likes more than watching a crooked game. Leave them plate calls and check swings to argue over, but strike calls go to the machine.
@MarcosElMalo2
@MarcosElMalo2 Год назад
It’s like a foot massage. It’s not the same as eating pussy, but it means something. Clapping sarcastically isn’t the same as mouthing off, but it’s in the same ballpark. So, it shouldn’t cause an immediate ejection. Even if there was stuff beforehand. The Ump goes over and asks, “you got something you want to say?” and then says, “You’re already on thin ice, so knock it off or you’re out of here”. If the player ignores the warning, he gets ejected. It’s sort of like an umpire establishing a strike zone. He’s got to let the players know how he is interpreting the rules.

You can't let guys make a show of it or they'll make a show of everything and you don't want that in a sport with 300+ calls a game. e.g. NBA players and coaches complain about every single call and it's can be hard to watch, sometimes. also, it's an emotionally charged situation. Tie game, umpires been BAD all series to both teams, etc. I think that the player here admitting it was an "intentful clap" was pretty big of him to do so, because the entire point is the deniability that he could have been clapping for his teammate and not against the umpires. So it was cool to see him own up to it and say "welp I didn't think I would get tossed for it but here we are." We have a player expressing maturity and truth, and umpires reading into everything that players do with no leeway being given for even the slightest perceived offense.

Literally no other sport ejects players for being emotionally invested in the game. Why? Because baseball is a dying sport built on outdated and laughably childish "traditions". No other sport has to try as hard yo stay relevant as the MLB. No other sport has to artificially increase scoring to keep fans interested. No other sport gives their officials unchecked authority to manipulate the outcome of games based on the whims of their overwheight asses and oversized egos. No other sport has officials that are so bad that they have become running jokes on an individual level. ( Angel Hernandez, I'm looking at you.) MLB is a dumpster fire and they keep trying to tell us it's a fireplace.

@@SkunkApe407 To be fair you can literally get a card just for arguing with a referee too much or swearing at them in football (or soccer as it were), which is the most popular sport in the world and has some amount of refereeing controversies. I think the umpiring system in baseball, from the little I follow, is dogshit. It's funny how little power unions have in America when they basically run the entire sport of baseball and disallow mediocre officials from being fired.

This seems like just one of many of the excessive ejections in baseball. I don't follow other sports as closely but it seems like it happens way more often in baseball over silly little things than any other sport. Sure, you can eject someone for being violent or causing trouble, but harmlessly disagreeing with a call? They really shouldn't be able to do something as extreme as an ejection for that...
@SkunkApe407
@SkunkApe407 Год назад
Unfortunately, baseball is more about unwritten "rules" and nepotistic asskissing than any other sport. Umps are entitled to act like pissy toddlers because the league's top brass protect them. MLB is the only sport that has to artificially inject excitement into the game by doctoring equipment and creating special rules to promote scoring, because nobody cares and they know it. You don't see NFL refs tossing players over a little bit of on field chirping. You don't see NBA refs ejecting players for disputing a call. It's only the lardassed land whales employed by MLB who get to act like tyrannical despots on gameday.

One ump earlier this year used the pitch clock to exact revenge. He called a violation 13 seconds after previous pitch hit catchers glove. It would remove the worst part of baseball - bad calls.

But if you allow one guy to openly disrespect you (please don't play dumb and act like the sarcastic applause wasn't disrespect) and you don't do anything, other players will join in. Not sure about baseball rules because they're all weird and nuanced and sometimes unwritten and all, but most rulebooks I've read have a rule that specifically deal with continued dissent/disparaging of officials after being warned. My guess here is that after being warned about continuously making his opinion heard (as wrong as this breakdown has shown), the umpires finally stopped giving him a break and had heard enough to warrant sending him to the showers so he could look at the video and see how wrong he was.

If it were just the two things shown then of course that'd be silly to toss him, but when you hear the rest of the story, especially that he'd been warned, I don't think tossing him at that point was unreasonable. It wasn't, from an optics point of view, ideal, as nobody else watching the game would know he'd been pushing buttons all game at this point, but given the fact that Walker wasn't letting things go it was reasonable to get rid of him at that point.
