The Belgian and Dutch investigations and conclusions are just the first of many. The rest of Europe's laws are very much alike, and the rest of the countries will follow suit quickly. Not to mention the EU capital is Brussels, so that's going to have a major influence as well. I specifically love that they actually call FIFA out to step in. FIFA games did not get enough attention in this battle against lootboxes, I feel, while the Ultimate Team model has been perfecting the lootboxes for years. Even with BF2's backlash, EA has stated that moving forward they will look at monetization options very closely to ensure that this does not happen again *in Anthem and Battlefield*. I bet they were hoping to sneak a fast one past us with FIFA 19, but that's already shut down with this verdict.

What interests me is how a lot of really popular mobile gachapon games aren't under this kind of scrutiny. These free-to-play apps come from Japanese develepors who have to carefully design their income model to comply with gambling being outlawed in their country of origin. One example I'm familiar with is the Nintendo IP owned Fire Emblem Heroes, and I feel like they approached free-to-play "randomised" monetization in an appropriate manner. The in-game currency is known as 'orbs', are obtainable by simply playing in a constant stream of gradually released story rewards, participating in special events, completing specific tasks, competing in PvP content, even just opening the app gives you some orbs. In addition to this you can of-course pay real money for currency, however it's still the plain in-game orbs, but they're quite pricey even by some f2p game standards. The currency itself isn't the well handled aspect, but it's the usage of it.The gameplay is based on classic Fire Emblem mechanics that are heavily reliant on character abilities and strengths, and the Fire Emblem Heroes app has characters obtained via a randomised gachapon style draw. But the most important thing is is they are TRANSPARENT with their odds and results are CONTROLLABLE. Character draw chances are given with VISIBLE percentage odds that are gradually BOOSTED each draw until you receive a high rarity character. They even have limited times where the base high rarity draw odds are boosted heavily. The characters are based around colour types (green,red,blue,grey) and each "draw" for a character has 5 randomised colour picks that you can choose one at a time and STOP SPENDING ORBS once you've picked one or pick all 5 at DISCOUNTED rate. This way the PLAYER CHOOSES how to spend, whether they want to draw for a specific colour character and stop or go for value within the 'random draw' aspect of the game. All of these transactions result in a character gained, and every character is useful in one way or another, always leaving you in the positive even with what's could be considered a bad draw. I think this is well implemented monetization scheme, is playable as a free to play game, and personally I've played it on and off for about a year I have like 600+ characters also in game completely free to play, that says something. It's TRANSPARENCY, PLAYER CHOICE and NET POSITIVE that make or break "lootbox schemes". Compare what I just explained to the likes of FIFA packs. A blind bag style choice where no odds are explained or shown, only a few things in these packs are set in stone ("a pack with 12 items, min. 3 rares") and some more expensive packs marketed as being worthwhile and profitable can be proved to be statistically worse or only marginally better than some cheaper ones. There isn't any transparency for the odds of obtaining good players and any consumer choice is muddled by marketing tactics that aim to mislead and misconceive. On top of all that, it can leave you in a NET NEGATIVE if you pay with in game currency coins, to be reliant on in game coins you have to be exceptionally lucky in the blind packs or become a market investor in-game (I shit you not). This is in a fucking full price release. My point is that what seem to be ethical randomised lootbox styled monetisation schemes actually exist. It's just these main stream developers are basing their schemes on heavily predatory tactics that can probably be rooted from really shitty mobile app tactics of parents un-knowingly paying for their child's in-app purchases on a random ass kids app. It was shitty in that stage, and it's shitty now and I hope they take a more consumer friendly approach or get absolutely slammed for not complying.

I honestly believe this will largely depend on larger markets like France and Germany getting on board. The UK has already ruled in the opposite, the US tends towards the opposite judicially, and the Asian market is inundated in loot boxes already. For a comparison, Belgium and the Netherlands have a combined population of 28 million, South Korea alone has a population of 51 million. I think the short term solution will simply be removing the purchase of lootboxes from the benelux while the publishers look for a new monotization strategy, because losing at least 51% of profit is something none of them are going to do.

The problem is in the small letters within these kind regulations in Belgium and Netherlands since there are dozens of loopholes a company could crawl through to keep its market without changing much if anything.. What you have to understand is that we cannot legally ban a game to be sold in a nation, the furthest you can go is not allow it to be sold to underage people.. But you can still buy the games online or ofcourse get someone to buy you the game.. And most people buy their games online anyway.. And the moment after a game is sold online (presumable from a foreign store), the company is no longer responsible for what happens after that or if a under aged individual plays it in the Netherlands or Belgium in this case.. All that happens is that people will now purchace them online at foreign stores. So in the end it will not neccesarily change that much.. We in Europe in giant soccer fans in general so I really doubt people will not buy the game just because of this.. I think EA is just going to swallow its pride and remain as silent about this as possible hoping it just flies over.. Or ofcourse Fifa as the organisation has to get involved in the same way as Disney did.. Otherwise I am 99% sure EA really doesn't care since it is more then 30% of their annual revenue we are speaking about.. Removing that would destroy their appearance in front of the share holders.. And that is what they want to avoid the most..

I did time in prison years ago, they gave me a 5 year sentence but I managed to get a 2 year deal. Unfortunately my friend who was also involved got added an additional 3...well let's say he wasn't happy seeing me when he got released.

Those capsules would tell you what are your chances of getting the item(s) you want, there are no duplicates (meaning you won't get the same items twice or more), and there is no micro transactions.

Well the big elephant in the room is the fact lootboxes have been around for a long time. MMORPGS have had them for a while. And many of them still use them, so if they don't go after all of them... it falls into selective enforcement which would make the big boys happy as their lawyers can use that tear them a new one in court.
