Mushroom Substrate Sterilizers are often expensive or difficult to make. the eZ Bake Barrel is the cheapest, easiest, and fastest way to start growing mushrooms on a small to medium mushroom farm.
Brass is the word you wanted when wiring your plug..🤔 Closer sounding to black and is what the terminal lug on the hot side of your circuit is made of..🧐 Or bronze, if that's your preferable way to remember it..🤷♂️ Great design! Easy to follow and build on. I can think of a couple components to add that would improve safety and provide more control of it's operation but I'm sure it works fine as is... Thanks for the content!
Seems like 50% of this video is missing. Would be great to see a Part 2 to finish this. I thought I’d seen all the videos on this, but saw this today. Where’s the happy ending with a working barrel??? C’mon man … do it! 👍😬
You know I never really planned on releasing this but I also never really planned on filming it again. But I've had so many questions, this version answers most of them so I figured it was good enough. The only thing missing is insulating the barrel. That can be done a hundred different ways.
Yeah these are great. I remember watching a lot of people building them back in 2015 when i started my farm. Gave up after a year and a half due to rental problems but these were out next step up from the 3x 941s and 2x 75xs. Im thinking if i had it to do again i would put 2 elements in a keg then run a sanitary fitting off the top with emergency release valves and regular ball valves then i could have more than one barrel running at a time off of one element. Just need to stagger the start and wait till one barrel gets to temp before opening the other valves. Another alternative is a steam generator for a steam shower, they can run on timers.
Would be great to see Part 2 with a complete working barrel. I’ve seen a lot of these but I really like the way you step-by-step us through the process!
Nice, but I wouldn't drill any holes directly above the element if you are using a regular steel barrel. It will rust with time and potentially leak water straight onto the element housing.
I'd say is you picked the WORST place to put the ground screw, precisely above the heater. It should be more to one side.... If there's any leak you are making sure that your connections will get wet...
I just made a version of your ez bake barrel. No insulation, a dedicated 15 amp breaker and 22 hr test resulted in 142 degrees Fahrenheit. I use a 3k water heater element and # 10 wire. (hoping i am getting at least 1.1 k watts out of it) To pasteurize a substrate for mushroom growing I need at least 160 degrees don't I? Next version I am insulating, plugging 1 of the 2 1/4 inch pressure release holes i put in the lid and praying for 160. What temperatures are you getting with your version? Thanks again for sharing your design. Much appreciated.
Literally just built this almost exactly same build, plugged it In and nothing happened but some bubbles on the elements I even used the same plug, Cable, and element.
how did you get your lid to not leak steam? I cant get my drums to close tight enough at the lip of the lid to not shoot the steam everywhere ruining my insulation
So just so I understand- I could use a 240volt element and ad- i don’t know, 12 inches of water and I’d be safe? No need for a float? Asking because running out of garage and I could use a hose and float now but eventually it’s going to freeze
I'm running a 240v 4500w element that is wired for the same plug into a standard 120vac outlet in one of my barrels and it's working well. My math puts it at about 1300w which is about as high as I would go. Do this at your own risk.
It does a pretty good job. I don't open it to see how aggressive it is but you should reach internal block temp in about 17 hours. Full pasteurization in about 24.
You need a false bottom in the barrel. You should secure the power cord to the barrel so if something pulls on the cord it doesn't rip the wires off, like a bolt and zip tie. Also you should have a thermostat. What you made no one should try to take credit for developing.
I agree with the false bottom but the video was too long as it was. This video was in production for a long time and it just covers the basics. Most individuals grasp the concept fairly easy. How can I help you understand it easier?
