Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, thirteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
A series of special episodes of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who will air to celebrate the programme's 60th anniversary. The episodes were written by Russell T Davies, and will be broadcast on BBC One in November 2023, preceding the following fourteenth series. David Tennant will appear as the Fourteenth Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Fifteenth Doctor. Catherine Tate was also confirmed to be returning to the show in the 2023 specials.
The three specials were directed by Rachel Talalay, Tom Kingsley and Chanya Button respectively. Filming moved from Roath Lock Studios to Wolf Studios once Bad Wolf became a co-producer of the series; filming commenced in May 2022, and was complete
David Tennant will appear as the Fourteenth Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Fifteenth Doctor. Catherine Tate was also confirmed to be returning to the show in the 2023 specials. Yasmin Finney joined the cast for the anniversary, to portray a character named Rose. Bernard Cribbins, Jacqueline King and Karl Collins are also set to return as Wilfred Mott, Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, respectively.
On 29 July 2021, the BBC announced that Chris Chibnall, who served as executive producer and showrunner of the series for the Thirteenth Doctor, would depart the series after a run of specials in 2022. In the BBC press release, Chibnall is quoted as saying: "I wish our successors - whoever the BBC and BBC Studios choose - as much fun as we've had. They're in for a treat!" The future of the programme was first teased by Piers Wenger on 25 August 2021, when he said an upcoming change for Doctor Who would be "radical".
On 24 September 2021, the BBC announced Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as showrunner, after having previously acted as showrunner from 2005-2010 for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. He will succeed Chibnall for the show's 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond. Davies will be joined by the Bad Wolf production company, which was founded by former Doctor Who executive producer Julie Gardner and former BBC head of drama Jane Tranter. In October 2021, it was announced that Sony would acquire a majority of Bad Wolf. Bad Wolf also took over creative control of Doctor Who beginning with the specials, allowing the BBC to focus on establishing Doctor Who as a global brand.
The Fourteenth Doctor is the current incarnation of the Doctor, the fictional protagonist of the BBC science fiction television programme, Doctor Who. The Fourteenth Doctor is portrayed by Scottish actor, David Tennant, who previously portrayed the Tenth Doctor.
Within the series narrative, the Doctor is a millennia-old, alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, with somewhat unknown origins, who travels in time and space in their TARDIS, frequently with companions. At the end of life, the Doctor regenerates; as a result, the physical appearance and personality of the Doctor changes.
Ncuti Gatwa had previously been announced as Jodie Whittaker's successor as the programme's lead, and many reports stated he would play the Fourteenth Doctor and that Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor would regenerate into an incarnation portrayed by Gatwa. Upon Jodie Whittaker's final appearance as the character, she instead regenerated into a form similar to the Tenth Doctor. This character, portrayed by Tennant, was confirmed to be the Fourteenth Doctor, with later clarification that Ncuti Gatwa would actually portray the Fifteenth Doctor

@@Tharries Yes. She's referred to as being from Blackpool in the show (I think Robot of Sherwood) - and Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS also makes a few references to her being from Lancashire (JC is also from Blackpool - and she's using her native accent in the show - I know that's not usually a signifier, but they seem to have based where Clara was from on where Jenna is from). She was living in London, sure - but isn't Ruby too?

For me, I expect my least favourite aspect of the season opener will be some of the humour. I'm not a fan of when Russell goes over the top and wacky route, especially if paired with Murray's music, I prefer surrealist or dark humour which I know RTD can do, I do like Butterfly effect gag however I wouldn't be surprised if some of the other comedic moments don't quite land but hopefully I'm proven wrong.

The Doctor being scared makes the audience scared since we’re used to them being intelligent, brave and almost all knowing so if something makes them feel scared and helpless it makes us feel that way too. Looking forward to seeing that as well as seeing Ncuti get to show his range.

@@Theoneandonlydramaqueen. It doesn't really matter. I've watched since the Troughton years, I worked on studio lighting in the latter years of Tom Baker's Dr. So I have a connection to this show. There is nothing about these few recent shows that makes me believe it's a quality watch. It's all flash and no substance. And yes it has got too silly with fluffy Meeps ugh, bigenerations, splitting the tardis with a big circus hammer, dance routines, davros whole again and rocket firing smartarse wheelchair...need I go on. The point is that previously on long production seasons, you could get away with the odd stinker or filler episode, but this run of 6 is a joke. You can throw all the money you like at this but even Jodie's era was better in lots if respects. Go watch the old series with their cheap rubber suits and wobbly sets, then compare the gravitas of some episodes with this latest...

This isn't the 90s. Thankfully, they have labour laws to stop overworking people. They do have plot lines what 😂. This also means you get a season a year as they are filming season 1 and 2 back to back, which took months and months of filming, then you have to send it off for vfx work

You don't like forced unworking queer plotlines but literally prople have problem with anything that is gay or trans. It has no impact at all. Exploring Transphobic and homophobic culture's stereotypical society as main plots are not problems but a mere inclusion of queer culture is a problem? Showing respect and welcoming representation to the people you let involved in your work is soo inappropriate? Are you expecting people to be just fillers that help the stereotypical people's work complete without even duch a tiny filler of a scene? Always raising an eye brow on differences and raiding an eye brow on a real life issue being tackled at the minor level over the actual negative people rather being seen as normal is quite questionable to be seen as a decent expression of one's thought on the matter!
