In The Sopranos, one of mob boss Tony Soprano's capos is Carlo Gervasi, who first appears in season 4 and is more prominent in season 6. He overseas works on the ports for the Sopranos and eventually takes over Sopranos construction business when Vito flees New Jersey.
Carlo is eventually thought to flip and become a witness for the state after his son gets busted for drugs. In this video, I wanted to discuss the foreshadowing of Carlo's betrayal, early clues that he would eventually become a rat and flip for the feds.

Honestly have to wonder if Carlo's presumed lack of loyalty is due to him seeing how Tony runs his shop for all these years. By the time we really get to know Carlo, Tony has already killed plenty of people within his own family and really balked at any tradition that old timers might have respected. Carlo mentioned that Silvio hit Dom first because he wanted tony to know that he was following the actions of his superior (eg, he had to back Silvio no matter what). Carlo also HAD to see that tony was becoming more ruthless (or even psychotic) at this point. I mean, mobsters would understand self preservation is pleasing the boss and avoiding his wrath. The "just following orders" defense to killing a made guy from another family was perhape Carlo's play to save his own life, given tony may blame him if Carlo had no reason to kill Dom without the "I was just following orders" defense.

This might not be popular and it would've been seen as something of a 'filler' episode, but I would've really liked it if there was a bit of tradition that each season contained an episode without Tony and his inner circle. An episode each season dedicated to the rest of the family, just a series of small stories among the rest of the crew, give the rest of the guys/actors a bit of time to shine as we see some of the stuff they get up to and how they are when Tony isn't around.

Some sopranos theories i believe are worth making a vídeo of: 1. Was Johnny Sack really interested in killing Tony Blundetto or was he simply waiting for the best moment to profit from it in the same way Carmine profitted from the Ginny Sack joke situation? If we take a deep look in the whole situation involving Tony B, giving him to Phil Leotardo would only satisfy Phil's thrist for revenge, not benefitting Johnny at all. In my opinion Johnny wanted the Soprano Family to kill Tony B so he could find a reason to take money from Tony. 2. Even saying he wanted to give Jackie jr. a pass because of the card game incident, was Tony really interested in letting Jackie jr. go or he simply didnt want to carry the burden of killing his best friend's kid, deciding to press Ralph to do it? 3. What could have possibly led Carmine Lupertazzi to settle with the Soprano Family in the whole HUD scam beef? And we could even make a comparision beetween this plot and the Ginny Sack joke plot, putting in contrast how both Carmine and Johnny dealt with their respective situations.

I'm not sure this is relevant, but during the crew settling down in the safe house, Carlo gives away their location, by asking Tony, "We order apizza?" (it sounded like "We order a-beets?") Tony agrees, "Ya." 'Apizza' is a distinct regional term in Italy, also regionally used in Connecticut, particularly in New Haven.

Going back to the "su**ing a c**k" reference. Tony may have been onto something. Look at his biggest earners. We know Vito did for sure, and we know enough about Ralphie to know it's not impossible he might have done it, either already or eventually... Do you think there is a correlation between "su**ing a c**k" and making a lot of money in construction? You should deep dive that. I've been a fan of your channel for a couple years now. Thanks

Hey! Great content man! I would like to raise two topics, if I may. 1) The parallel between Christopher and Pauly chasing the Russian in the woods and them chasing Mikey P on season 1. Maybe nothing but I thought it interesting that they were at it twice. Also, earlier on season 3, Meadow mentions the symbolism of snow as death, and here they are surrounded by infinite death. Is this their purgatory? 2) On season 4, the parallel between Valentina and Pie O My. Both get burned. Also Tony asked for the painting of him and the horse to be burned.

Carlo flipping was very appropriate when taking into account the ambiguity of the show's ending. It provides a more longform bad outcome for Tony in the event of him not succumbing to the shortform bad outcome of possibly being whacked by his many enemies. Him ratting provides the possibility of arrest and imprisonment. One of the many different potential bad outcomes that a mobster might be subjected to.

I always felt that among the many flaws in season 6 Sopranos, the downplaying of Carlo and his son Jason's powerful story that was never fully realized was the major flaw. There was tremendous buildup and back story: Carlo being disenchanted with Tony after hearing that Tony doesn't care about loyalty, add to that the constant insults. Then there is Jason, much time is spent introducing this character, building him up as an unlikable violent douchebag. All that for nothing. There weren't any scenes of Jasons bust, Carlo having to turn informant to help his son legally. The two characters father and son are never seen again and only mentioned in a brief conversation Tony has with his lawyer. Carlo's testimony would have been the final nail in the coffin of Tony's career. A great undercurrent of a story that would have built more tension in the final season that was overlooked and forgotten among the many and less intriguing storylines.

The poet Archibald MacLeish wrote a poem that ended with the line "a poem should not mean, but be." Great art doesn't lecture you, it just is what it is. Imagine if Chase had ended the series with some guy just walking up to Tony in the restaurant and shooting him in the head. That would not be art. If Tony goes to confront Ralphie and Ralphie says "yeah, I did set fire to the stable, what's the problem?" and Tony flies into a rage and kills him, all the art involved in creating the layers of Ralphie's character and the layers of Tony's motivation in killing Ralphie are gone.

They wouldnt be able to punch him without a sitdown with Phil which we all know wouldn't go well. Carlo did what was going to have to happen way. If you punch a madeguy, might as well go all the way and maintain plausible deniablity.

I don't agree with your explanation of the situation with Fat Dom. Sil hit him with a vacuum and jumped on him, which is against the rules and surely would've put a target on Sil's head when dealing with Phil as boss. It was either kill Dom or put Sil's life in serious danger. Carlo was doing the smart thing if you ask me in that situation. Sil overreacted if anyone did

Having seen the entire show back within a few months now, I have been wondering about all the car accidents on The Sopranos. Like seriously, there is a lot of them. Were they just easy plot devices to use over and over again and a product of poor writing? Any meaning behind them?

I get what you're saying, but car accidents aren't unusual and happen more often than one might think. I'm younger than Tony and Christopher were on the show and I've been in 4 car totaling accidents and several others just causing damage. I know a lot of people who have been in accidents. They probably used accidents in the show more than they should've, but it isn't unrealistic in my opinion.

You got something slightly incorrect: it wasn't sil saying carlo no it was fat dom saying it. Sil would have known from the second Dom got hit, he had to go, because he was a made man, and that would have started a war with NY if he went back and said what happened.

I completely disagree with your analysis. I’m even going so far to say… I CALL “BULLSHYTE” ! The moment Silvio punched a made-man, Carlo had to kill him. Both Silvio & Carlos would’ve gotten clipped. Because one of the top rules of the mob was Made-Men can never lay hands on, or strike another Made Man, on penalty of death. There was no way Carlo could let that guy walk out alive. Because he would’ve been implicated regardless. Remember the guy Coco that bothered Meadow ? Tony got a pass for stomping his mouth out & pulling a gun on the other only because Coco sexually harassed & disrespected Tony’s daughter & this insulted Tony “as a Man” & “As a Man of Honor”. Tony almost got clipped for beating up Ralphie outside the Bing. After which Tony HAD TO make Ralph a capo to compensate. “Silvio hit him first” means Carlo had to stab him because the line had been crossed & Silvio had to be protected” Silvio told Tony not to come in so Tony could have “ignorance & deniability” thus protecting Tony from backlash.

Machiavelli stated “A Prince must avoid any characteristic or behavior that will garner him to become “hated”. The moment Tony berated Carlo telling him to “maybe start sucking cock” … the look in Carlos’s eyes was one of “that’s it mfker you’re done”. The insult was not only over-the-top & unnecessary, it was humiliating, it was emasculating and it was “personal”. Men can handle a cursing out in front of others when his results are below standards, or performance lackluster, that’s to be expected and even appreciated, but you never punk a guy’s manhood. It was the same mistake that got Caligula killed by his bodyguard, and what made Talleyrand take out Napoleon. Tony brought that outcome upon himself.

Well, you're probably right. Carlo's son was arrested on drug charges and it's the likely cause that he flipped, to save his son. Carlo had a weak, nervous character, always looked worried and Tony probably only put him in charge of construction because he was the "best" of a few bad available alternatives (Paulie, for example). In that season 4 scene when Tony yells at Carlo, Ralph and Ray Curto Carlo looks like a kid being yelled at by a teacher or parent, unlike Ralph and Ray who sort of pushed back to some extent. Tony's problem was that he wasn't always the best at reading people and that he was prone to belittling those working close to him.

Tony was great at reading people, thats why he's always finding women to be with. He wasnt a mind reader though, and thats what I think this illustrates one of the themes of the show. Somethings are just up to chance and cant be planned for. Now matter how much power and control Tony got, he couldnt plan for everything and thats a great reason to NOT be like Tony. Which is the ultimate theme of the show after all.

"He'S a NaTuRaL LeAdEr!" One issue I have with The Sopranos and MSoN is that there's a lot of telling of abilities, but when it comes to showing them? Not so much. Tony being a "natural leader" is a big one, because he's pretty terrible at it. Worse, I'd say, is the IQ claims Tony puts forth both about himself and Tony B. Frankly, I don't think David Chase even knows what IQ actually says about an individual, let alone what high IQ behavior entails. Probably even thinks that IQ and emotional IQ are completely separate.
