Talk about getting right down into it... Great presentation Will !! Amphibian activist here, with a (self built) backyard frog pond in shallow woods on the property. I also installed a goldfish pond which at times can rival the frog pond with nature's activity! Early March is the time for Spotted Salamander spermatophores in the frog pond, soon followed by the "quacking" of the Wood Frogs as they court the ladies and deposit their egg masses throughout!! It truly is a sensational time of year!!

Great video! I can't believe you flipped a jeff. Looks like you're having a lot of success with salamanders so far. (Wish I could say the same lol. Haven't even found a single spotted yet this year, kind of embarrassing).

You're so lucky to be able to find all these different species, literally all I have where I live are two lined salamanders, and nothing else. They're better than nothing, but I just wish I lived outta the city so I could find some more interesting species
@justinsmith3079
@justinsmith3079 2 года назад
I've been in Massachusetts for over 40 years, and the only ones I have ever found are red efts/newts, red-backed, and two-lined. Red-backed used to be the most common by far but I hardly ever find them anymore. Red efts are much more common than they were when I was young.

Hey young man, Another intriguing video, as anticipated. I always learn something from your films, so thanks… Lots of wriggly salamanders to be sure. One highlight of the film was not a salamander but the Pickerel frog. I think they’re under appreciated - they are quite “showy” as pattern can compensate for lack of intense color, if one has as eye for it. I live in the “high desert” in New Mexico and had always associated scorpions with hot/dry climates. But I learned from your and from Noah’s videos there are scorpions in your area; three species. Have you ever been stung, what with all your flipping and bare-handed poking around? Never miss an opportunity to hit the “like” button as every film is a winner.
@WillRobertsonsWildlife
@WillRobertsonsWildlife 2 года назад
Thanks! I don't think there are scorpions up as far north as me, but I actually did get stung by one while herping with Noah! It was nothing bad, just like a mild bee sting

Very cool. Only ever flipped a Jefferson once, in August of all times, in upper NE Pennsylvania.

The difference from the Southeast is Stark. Herpers are already finding a lot of reptiles there. Very nice salamanders and the red salamander was incessantly active. In Europe slow-moving salamanders are the the norm. Most are in the newt family here.

The salamander at 7:30 appears to be a northern ravine salamander (Plethodon electromorphus) or a ravine salamander (Plethodon richmondi), instead of a leadback phase red-backed salamander
