Those tiger salamanders were awesome and so were the turtles. I did not know they were that active in the cold water! I also saw some tadpoles swimming around which was cool! I wish you could have gone back to where the turtles were, but in the day time........keep up the awesome herping. Seeing those younger salamanders was not boring to me at all. I actually don’t know that much about them and I find it quite interesting! Thanks Will! 😄💙🐬🐊🐍

Great to see Sir Teddy with you, Will! 🙂 All those tigers were so very awesome! The only tigers I’ve ever seen were in a playa lake in the Texas panhandle back in ‘79. I always wanted to see adults on land, but never have. Very cool! And all those painters!! Insane indeed! Have had my share of meals in WaWa parking lots in the wee hours of the night after work or road hunting. Nice Northern Spring.

Very cool. Been a weird winter. Turtles out basking and traveling overland here in Ma on Friday, 2/10. Strange. Interesting you found the pickerel frog in the spring house with two lines. I visit a cistern (like your structure #3) that is the winter congregation for pickerel frogs and two lines. Been checking it on and off for 40 years and never seen any other species.

That water is so clear turtle and sallys, I'd take that. WaWa food, not so much. Jealous of that habitat and all the sallys. All peeps find this time of year is Gila and Rock Rattlesnake dens here in AZ.

That's awesome. You make it look so easy. I've gone my entire life without finding a tiger. Always had them as pets but never found them. I'm in north Georgia. Any Georgia spots you'd recommend?

This is the benefit of a cold-blooded metabolism. They can stay under the ice And b somehow activ in temperatures lethal for mammals. Also, is the water from those springs potable?
@WillRobertsonsWildlife
@WillRobertsonsWildlife Год назад
I’m not sure, I personally wouldn’t risk it unless I had to, but I bet it would be fine to drink!

So many cool Salamanders! I was able to see a painted turtle under the ice months ago which was a first. Do you think Salamanders, maybe wood frogs would be breeding yet in Wisconsin?
@WillRobertsonsWildlife
@WillRobertsonsWildlife Год назад
Potentially! Depends on temps and rains, gotta have thawed ground, ~45 temps, and some rain

@WillRobertsonsWildlife
@WillRobertsonsWildlife Год назад
They breed in winter throughout most of their range in the Us

I watched a salamander documentary where they were finding salamanders that could reproduce asexually. As well as something like 5 different species that could crossbreed with each other(more than just blue spotted with Jefferson) Was really interesting, if you havent seen it and are interested, ill try to refind it

I had a female northern leopard frog as a pet for several years before. She was really beautiful and got to be very tame. She would eat superworms out of my hand. Unfortunately like all pets she got old and died. I'm not interested in getting another one but she was a great pet. Some guy in the frog and toad Facebook group that I am a member of has a large female albino pickerel frog that he found as a baby on his property. She likely would have been eaten by a predator by now had he not kept her as a pet.

How does a painted turtle hibernate under the ice? Like how can they be that active without needing to come up for air?

Keep your hands clean, the oils can clog the pores in their skin and harm them since they breath through their skin
@WillRobertsonsWildlife
@WillRobertsonsWildlife Год назад
This is a good thought, and something I am careful of! The oils on the skin thing is somewhat of a misconception, but it is very important to consider chemicals you might have on your hands like bug spray, soap, or hair products!
