EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 5: The series “clicked” for me and I’m addicted now

All of a sudden the game really clicked for me and out of nowhere I found myself fully onboard for whatever the franchise has in store next! (Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain) I have currently converted two of my friends and my wife to the co-op EDF cause and it is a blast to play with some buddies.

The game seems silly at first glance, but it is just extremely fun. Playing as the jetpack chick with the Lance weapons (short range lasers basically) is the most fun I have had on console in ages.

We know that in this reboot of the EDF universe, we are on an earth where ants, spiders and frogs do not exist and no earthlings are able to recognize them or find them in any way familiar.

This series is seriously one of the most fun and engaging I’ve come across in all of my years of playing video games. Long live the EDF and Inferno or go home.

as an EDF series veteran is it just absolutely amazing to hear newcomers to the series just.... "get it" about these games, and have such a blast with them.

EDF has always only been interested in one thing and that's being, pure, uninterrupted arcade fun. It does it with no frills and no pretensions. It's a video game and it damn well knows it.

The story telling while simple is actually very good as the tone was consistent from start to finish, especially how the story unfolds.

Okay... not a challenge at the beginning? One word: Inferno I’ve never seen a game in my life that actually made shooting a Enemy such a rewarding and tactically pleasing task. Being on top of a building, and firing a plasma cannon at a mech and doing so for serval minutes adjusting aim to throw off his aim was fantastic, the buildings around me crumbled as he barely missed and his aim was thrown off by my plasma canon, the buildings behind him crumble form the shockwaves of the plasma canon hitting him and my missed shots, my being forced back as he would destroy my building cover... The entire game is just, rewarding Nevermind the fact there was 7 other of those fuckers around the map and I was dealing with just 1 of them

Wait until you reach mission 41 and beyond. Around that point, this game takes off its gloves (if you can even imagine it was wearing any to begin with) and starts becoming noticeably more chaotic than it already is lol. Just reached mission 90, myself. Apparently, this game has 110 campaign missions so i'm getting close to the end. Just 20 more to go...and no end to the chaos in sight lol.

That speech about eyes was some Churchill level shit. I could imagine the Big C saying that before the D-day.

I feel like I’m the one of the rare Air Raider players who uses the Medic vehicle instead of a tank or some offensive vehicle online. Even in 4.1 I hardly saw anybody using the Armored Caravan Support vehicle besides me. But hell whenever I was in a lobby everybody swarms to me because I’m the Medic I even changed my characters colors to white and red xD

To me I instantly clicked with the tone of the game. There's something inherently compelling about B-movie gun-ho soldier archetypes eagerly throwing themselves into the meat grinder and getting slaughtered en mass. It has somewhat of a similar thing going for it in that regard that the film Starship Troopers did. The thing is EDF has this "thing" going for it too where as things get more desperate and the humans get beat more and more despite your efforts it sort of takes a bit of a darker tone while still keeping the cheesiness and corniness intact.

In EDF there is no room for whiney babies. We destroy aliens against all odds equipped with the best fps drop in the entire world! EDF! EDF! EDF!

I can remember when I played the first mission on the ps3 version "Save the civilians!" *PROCEDES TO MURDER BUGS, CIVILIANS AND MY TEAM MATES*

Been a huge fan of EDF since finding EDF 2017 in the bargain bin at a game store years ago. I've played a lot of games since the NES, but the EDF games never disappoint and are always some of the most fun games you could ever play if you're just looking for mindless action and want a break from deep, sophisticated stories! EDF 5 is no exception, and I'm having an absolute blast playing it!! Also, if you're looking for a challenge, you haven't seen a challenge quite like playing an EDF game on inferno difficulty!

My first EDF game and having a blast. The minute my character started singing little sections of those songs you can sing while killing giant bugs, I knew I was gonna love it.

This game is criminally underrated.

I been playing EDF since 3(2017 in the US), I was immediately hooked, imported the 1st 2 games. I love how in the 1st 3 games buildings get blown up with one explosive of any kind. Once you get eh Stampede M20 you can level a skyline instantly. 5 is excellent, they've really just given fans of the core gameplay more of what we want, and it has really payed off.

EDF was just a nice change of pace for me. Gigantic insects? No developers would dare to do that because its so bizzare. And when the gigantic fortress comes into place, my frames dropped to below 10 and I didn't even care.

Its a great game. Play with a friend, split screen couch coop. Have a beer and slaughter thousands of giant insects, very nice!

I picked up EDF 4.1 on sale late last year and loved it, since then bought 5 and played it split screen to completion and again solo on harder difficulties. Great game!

I did exactly the same in 2018-19 and we finished 2017,4.1,5, IA and IR all in split screen. The 5 is incredible and peak of the series. I just returned to it now in 2022 and it's so good. Runs 4k60 flawless on pc too. Mouse controls are great. It's 60fps on ps5 too

I loved EDF4.1 in the PS3 days. Just bought EDF5 today, and 5+ years later, I can tell you with certainty after a couple hours, that EDF5 is "simply more of the same things". More importantly I can also tell you: "WHAT A GAME! !!" The best from the West gave us the legendary XCOM games. The beast from the East gave us the legendary (yeah it is!) EDF!

I play EDF 5 on PC in 5k and honestly its one of the best looking games I own, yeah the graffics are a little dated but you see every shell caseing, everything is destroyable, when you shoot enemies pieces of them come off, this game pays ALOT of atention to detail and is more realistic and has more destructive environments then even the newest battlefield games.

at first my girlfriend was like wtf are you playing and now she's super addicted too.

I've been a fan of this series since 2013, and there are two things I've noticed in this game that VASTLY improve my enjoyment of it. First one is Wing Diver being given a dodge roll action. This is INSANELY useful and was sorely missing from previous iterations. Second one is a QOL improvement, and that's the sprint function. Being able to travel across the map really fast while also being able to pick up crates within a larger radius alleviates a lot of the issues we had about the previous games, where we had to tediously combat roll around just to pick up all the crates. Now you can travel around the map super fast and you can pick up more crates at once. My only gripe with the game are the first two or three missions which are basically just a tutorial and should've been optional.

Tbh I would pay top dollars just to have the old edf anthem back.

I had this game sitting in my cart because it was on sale, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to purchase it. Then the sale ended. And I went to purchase a different game, and I was just pressing ex to get through the purchase screens, and I ended up purchasing this game at full price by accident. It literally just happened this morning, and I’m already addicted to this game.

HOLY CRAP I REMEMBER THIS!

In EDF 4.1 there is a wing diver weapon with 15 shots named the Custom lancer and is the upgraded version of the normal lancer. The weird thing about it is disgustingly OP. It can take the robots out in 4 to 5 shots while it takes out the ants and arachnids out in 1 shot. The thing can also do real absurd damage against the motherships that drop the ants. The problem with the wing diver back in EDF 4.1 is that the energy management is a little insane. And that was my go to weapon.

You sold me on this game. I'd always see Japanese streamers playing this but never thought about getting it myself. Just wish i had some buddies to play it with, I can't imagine the online being that busy for such a niche game.

Oddly I never played this game from the previous series. One day someone posted the ign review in a fb group. Before it even finished I was like i want that damn game! Bought it as soon as I could and just love it so much.

What you said about Destiny 2 is spot on. It's that exact reason I can't bring myself to play games like that. Graphics focus and poor gameplay.

EDF is an amazing series been playing it for years it's just sad it took 8 games and unreal 4 to do it for people cause there all hung up on looks, have we really forgotten about the joy that was single player and multilayer games that are not broken and filled with micro transactions. They crappy B+ video games are what define games when they were games and not pay to play services. good review!

Me just driving straight into this series was the best thing I've done. Never played a EDF game till I got EDF 5. AND WOW It's really something of a new experience._.

EDF! EDF! EDF! Been playing it since it was in the SIMPLE series imported. PS2 i think??? I can't even remember what year that was but probably around 20+ years ago? This game has always been a diamond in the rough. Basically the game loop just works.
