I like how during the quench you can see the Leiden frost effect as it cools from the ends and works it’s way to the center, that is just so neat.

Leiden frost effect? I learn something new everyday. Thanks for sharing.

Glen, your willingness to experiment and think outside the box is commendable. Maybe an up and coming jewler!

I really enjoy working with copper. I looked for tin but cannot find any source here in Taiwan so far. Thanks George.

Borax or boric acid will give copper a pink color, especially good for flowers. Clearcoat after a rinse.

Hey Robert, I'm willing to try most stuff and so have become a jack of all trades and master of none! But working with copper has got me right now - really enjoy it.

I really love working with copper and experimenting with patinas. A good one is to soak wood chips or sawdust in ammonia in a sealable plastic container. You can suspend the piece above it or bury it in it. This will give you various blues and greens. I also soak it in Miracle Grow (or other house plant fertilizer solution) then heat with a torch. Most of these require a sealer or they will come off.
@gstongs
@gstongs 9 месяцев назад
I'm after blue and green and so may give this a go. Some have said this sort of patina is toxic and I'm not sure... But sealer should take care of that plus the patina from fading. Thanks.

@@gstongs awesome! I can’t remember the name of the sealer I bought, but I’ll look for it. It’s for sealing jewelry and it works great. A little expensive though.

Interesting as always, Glen! I wear a plain copper band most days, and the patina constantly changes as it reacts with your skin (which I believe is slightly acidic). I have found that if I want to clean/shine mine, a product called Bar Keeper's Friend (a powdered cleanser) works wonders. An added benefit of copper is that it's antimicrobial, A couple of interesting side stories are how Bar Keeper's Friend was first conceptualized (involving rhubarb), and how copper (and brass) were discovered to be antimicrobial, dating back to a cholera outbreak in 19th century London. I'm going off memory, so my details may need to be verified.
@ahab145
@ahab145 10 месяцев назад
It is antibacterial but I've heard that I patina can be toxic to the touch in long term exposure so it might be best to coat it in a clear finish or something. Don't know how true it is but I worth looking up if you wear copper jewelry

The one I'm currently wearing has a polished finish. Not sure about patinas and toxicity but I'll research it. Thanks.

Hey Glen, always love your videos, you have a very different way of thinking than most blacksmiths on here. In my experience, and I have a firebrick forge, molten copper has eaten away at the firebrick over a short period of time while reheating with leftover copper bits in my forge. Just want to leave you a heads up before it happens to yours, I've taken to using little single-piece forged steel molds and holders when melting copper in the forge. I originally tried sheet steel boxes, but the molten metal flows straight through the tiniest gaps left from folding.

Thank for sharing your input. Melted copper has already done a number on my refractory.

You can make for brass rods as well but only when you heat it about 700 C and i manage to weld brass by also hammering a hoted tiny piece like you show in the video

Just a note, The use of a steel vessel and/or tongs in the citric will also give a different outcome than if you don't use steel. It creates a plating effect that gives it a reddish/pink hue generally
@gstongs

This is a very good point and so I'm going to make copper tongs or use a copper hook when possible to submerge pieces. Thanks for sharing.
