Easily Upgrade Ford Sync 2 using a USB Stick

If you have an Ford Vehicle older than 2015 or 2016 it likely has Ford Sync 2. Ford Sync version 2 is an excellent product that you can easily upgrade the maps and infotainment system yourself.
You simply need to create a free account on Ford.com or Ford.ca, add your VIN number, download the patch file, unzip the file onto a USB stick formatted with FAT32, then put that USB stick into a USB port on your Ford and turn the key.

Thank You So Much for this Video! I purchased my 16 Fusion SE 2 years ago and was in constant battle with the dealership while under warranty that I could not use my GPS. Unfortunately it was not a Ford dealership that I purchased the vehicle from, and the dealership I did purchase from kept directing to Ford to repair. Two years without using this feature on my car, and I took a chance purchased the SD Card from Amazon the price Ford has is ridiculous, and searched how to update my SYNC SYSTEM I finally landed on your Video, and you made this such a breeze! I rarely post comments but you sir are an absolute legend. Updated my Sync 2 in 25 minutes. Not only it fixed the issue of pairing Bluetooth automatically to my phone but also seems to have fixed the minor static noise with the radio unit (hopefully, need time to verify if that actually fixed it). Now I'll try to add navigation and cross my fingers. Already got the ELM327 connector & the Ford A10 Maps SD card.

Mine has had all the problems of not connecting to blue tooth, everything resetting as soon as I turn off the car and all that. I have tried this 1 zillion times so hopefully I can finally get this to work.

I almost had to return the latest nav card because it wasn't doing anything but giving me an error. This update made it all work and I had never seen the nav system in two years on my 2011 Edge. Oh my gosh, you are a hero to me. After multiple failed attempts following the Ford site instructions I found your video and successfully upgraded on the FIRST TRY from a Sync v2 to Sync v3 on my 2017 Ford Explorer. Now, on to upgrading my mapping software, which is what started this whole debacle.

You can't upgrade from sync 2 to sync 3 with a USB stick... It's a costly hardware change!

Thank you so much. Automatic updates were on but it never updated... It was driving me crazy especially after I got in my homeboy suv who has the same exact make model and year expedition as me. Just different color. I was like damn why yours look like that he said that's how his came. I checked his software version and yet and behold. So I got on RU-vid and found you!

Absolutely perfect! The Ford site doesn’t explain that the zip has to be extracted to the root, and not to the desktop. It won’t transfer and gives an error each time. Took 15-20 mins to fully install and no issues. Great vid 👏🏽🙏🏽

@@dailymoments6882 downloading it to my computer, then extracting it to the root folder, and then trying to drag the extracted files to the formatted thumb drive wouldn’t work. Would always get an error when trying to copy. So download and saved to my thumb drive, and then extracted it in the thumb drive, and then deleted the zipped folder. Ran on auto install the min I put it in my truck.

I used to have a 2015 Ford Escape SE with that small screen. It was okay when I had the vehicle till it broke down a little bit over 2 months. I got a 2020 Ford Escape SE. It has Sync 3 in it. I even loved the Apple Car Play. It was so easy to do w/o using the manual for the vehicle. It was a big upgrade for me.

First, thanks. Your tutorial was about as good as I've ever seen. How does this update interact with the "Map Version" SD Card. I know you said that this update for SYNC 2 updates the maps, but do I also need to get the latest SC Card in order for the GPS to work its best? Also, is there a certain time of the year that Ford typically releases their newest SC Card? Thanks.

Hi William. The SD card will still be required. The download that you put onto your USB stick includes updated maps and so there is nothing else for you to do after the upgrade it applied.

I had not heard that but I see you are correct: media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2017/05/19/ford-sync-3-software-update-apple-android-2016-vehicles.html The firmware should be on the site we show. If you don't see it under SYNC 2, click the SYNC3 option and see if it is there. Otherwise I would just call the Ford help line. Thanks Son.

Hi Mr. I have a question about my Sync in my Ford Edge is not turning on. Only when I disconnect the power and put it back the radio works for like 30 secs but it turns off back again. But the screen still off. I just try the update but still not working. Any ideas will must appreciated? Thanks

Alas, my dashboard shows an error when trying to get the update. (it does show an update available), but I get "WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE ERROR. WE ARE WORKING TO CORRECT IT AND REQUEST YOU TRY AGAIN LATER." -- Several years I got notified by Ford (via snail mail) that my vehicle's sync could no longer be updated. And I've seen and taken pictures of the screen two times that they have pushed an update since then. I don't see a way to check the exact version of the software I'm running.

Great tutorial, but I've run into a problem. I have a 2011 MKZ Hybrid. I got a 16 GB stick USB 3.1 thumb drive. I downloaded and extracted the file and put them at the root level. When I insert the drive into the center console I get " Unable to Connect". I normally use it for my phone to I know the port is good. When I pull the USB out it does recognize that I have removed the USB drive. I formatted the thumb drive on a Windows box to FAT32. Any ideas?

You have to convert your usb from GPT to MBR. That can be done via cmd on your computer!

I have a 2015 escape with the sync 2 touch. I upgraded it per your instructions and the update was successful. My questions is how do I get the maps? I bought this used 4 years ago and the maps never worked. The only thing that shows up in the home screen map quadrant is the compass. Any idea?

In the upper right corner of your screen does it say "Information" or "Navigation"? If it says "Information", you don't have navigation...

Will the update fix "Entertainment unavailable" on my Ford SYNC 2? Tried removing the battery, removing the audio fuse and master reset but it still wont work.

It will not add nav, if you don't have it already, but it will update the maps and system if you do. If you do not have navigation, it will update the other components of the infotainment system. Thanks for checking in Brandon
