Eastbound & Westbound Amtrak California Zephyrs Meet in Ottumwa, IA 6/23/15

Here's something that doesn't happen every day! On June 23rd, 2015, I waited throughout the day in Ottumwa, Iowa, to videotape Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr (train #6), which was running many hours late. It kept getting later, and I of course thought of the possibility that it might be close to the arrival time of the westbound Zephyr (train #5) as well, around 7 PM, and there might be a meet. It was very close for a while, but unfortunately the westbound Zephyr was late, too, with an estimated arrival into Ottumwa near 8 PM.
Thankfully (I guess), #6 got delayed yet again, thanks to a crazy passenger, who according to the Creston dispatcher was taking a joy ride "on top of the train" (!!). The police had to be called to deal with the problem, and they sat in between Albia and Ottumwa for probably a half hour or more. Well this set the stage for the video you're about to see. #5 hadn't lost much more time, and now #6 was set to arrive around 8 PM as well, putting both Zephyrs into Ottumwa at the same time! Not knowing what to expect, I set up at Gateway Drive west of the station to film #6 coming in. On the back of this train is private car "Silver Foot", a business car originally operated as a Union Pacific lounge-sleeper.
When the train stopped, I got in the car and drove over to the other side of the station near Market Street. I knew that #5 was probably close to, or in town already, and that it might be held at Iowa Avenue (east edge of town) until #6 left. This wasn't the case tonight! Instead, I heard #5 approaching, and made a last-minute decision to film the train on the north side of the tracks instead of the south. #5 stopped short of the Green Street crossing until #6 finished their station work and whistled off. Then, it started creeping forward, as #6 departed. What I ended up capturing was a perfect meet of the two trains, as both head ends met at Green Street. What luck? I'm not sure how many times this has actually happened, but it's very, very unusual!
Once getting into the station, I walked the length of #5 and filmed it departing the station, only about an hour late. #6 was more than 10 hours late when it left Ottumwa, and would arrive in Chicago at 1:15 AM.

Loved it. I grew up in Ottumwa in the days of the big black locomotive trains. The tracks went beside my grandparents home with a huge wooden overpass bridge by their driveway. I would go stand on the bridge to watch the chug chug trains go by 60 ft below me.

An EXCELLENT video!Thank you for posting that. I've been a passenger aboard the Amtrak "California Zephyr" several times, travelling back and forth between Salt Lake City, Utah and Chicago, Illinois, where I'd change trains to continue on to either Washington, D.C., or Fayetteville, North Carolina. The first time that I rode on the Amtrak "California Zephyr", I went by coach. But, after that first trip, on all my subsequent trips, I purchased a roomette, which is really a necessity when travelling for long distances. I love the quiet privacy of having a room all to myself, and the effect of sleeping while that train is speeding through the night is pure Heaven! Also, I really enjoy the meals in the dining car, while watching the scenery, which is like watching a Western movie, but without the soundtrack.

Thank you so very much for posting this!! I was born and raised in Albia and have been through the Ottumwa station too many times to remember in my 73 years. I remember when the Wapello Street Viaduct -- the bridge early in the video -- was built during my senior year in college. I can say that when the CB&Q ran this railroad, there never were trains 10 hours late as I recall. Wonderful memories! Thanks again for uploading.

I rode on the zephyr and we arrived an hour late due to a UP freight coming down the hill from mofat tunnel. The Conductor was like " We might stop to let the vents to blow out the smoke from the freight" And suddenly we got a green signal and we never stopped lol! Took 10 mins to cross the tunnel and we arrived at glenwood 3 hrs later.

I think I was on that westbound train. I was traveling Chicago-Denver, and our train ran about 4 hours late upon our arrival. A big derecho was out ahead of us for basically the whole journey and sent two tornadoes across the tracks in different spots, one just outside Ottumwa, one just outside Omaha

If two California Zephyrs are both on time, they usually meet at the following locations: Somewhere in Nebraska in the night Around Dotsero, Colorado - near Glenwood Springs Somewhere in eastern California

Also, if these two trains were on time they would have met in the western suburbs of Chicago. The westbound Zephyr departs Chicago about 50 minutes before the eastbound is supposed to arrive.

I find it crazy that Ottumwa is the largest city in Iowa (by population) to have an Amtrak stop in spite of being NINETEENTH overall in population! None of the top 18 cities have service. That’s gotta be some kind of record.

Considering how they're continually being starved for funding by a highway-centric Congress, it's a tribute to Amtrak's employees that trains get to their destinations at all. But they do a great job, and if people are planning to take Amtrak, it's best to be flexible. (That flex is built into their timetables.) Funny, though. People who throw stones at Amtrak have no trouble sleeping on cots in airports when planes are backed up because of rain/snow/fog/air traffic control glitches/whatever.

Thank the corporations that control Congress - Big Oil (Shell, BP Amoco, Citgo), Big Auto (Ford, Chrysler, GM) and Big Tire (Goodyear, Firestone, Michelin) along with the unholy and corrupt orthodox Jew Rothschild conspiracy that controls these corporations from their three bases in Washington, London and Vatican City.

The thumbnail shows “load-smoke” - what the ones I saw (recently) did under acceleration or heavy load. I thought this to be cool. “Does the engine have *soot?”* “Yes, it does. It’s a sho’nuff train, so it has soot.” Not like an Alco, but decent just the same.

What is the "Silver Foot" -- a private car? Does that mean someone else owns it an hitches a ride on the back of Amtrak like a private plane???

I wonder if the railroad engineers of both trains hate each others guts. They see each other off in the distance and automatically get in a bad mood.

Why would they? Is going eastbound better than westbound? They'll probably get to go the other direction tomorrow, so there's no point being upset.....🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️
