I'd suggest buying a Wahl. Good quality and plenty of guards to choose from. I have a cordless Wahl with a lithium battery and guards 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,10,12 & 16. Can do plenty of different length haircuts with these guards. Once you start cutting your own hair you won't go back to the barber. I cut my hair every 3-4 weeks with $0 cost. Simple to keep neat all of the time when you cut it yourself.
It should work. They can be kind of annoying to use at longer lengths because you'll probably have to lift the hair with the other hand while you go over it each time. I use it when I cut my brother's hair and his hair is much thinner than mine
