We're starting to get our holiday fabric in and we got an ADORABLE Christmas cookie print from Dear Stella that I just had to turn into a Double Oven Mitt and I'm sharing the pattern with you for FREE!
I have a bunch of these and I just love them for baking. One is always hanging over my oven handle so it looks cute in my kitchen and I never have to go searching for a second pot holder.
In the tutorial and the FREE pattern to go with it, I show you how to use a combination of batting and Insul-Bright to make your Double Oven Mitt heat-reflective so your hand won't burn.
Then we cover how to use the template to create the curved ends, create continuous bias binding the fits perfectly around the edges and stitch it in place for an adorable finished look.
Make one for you, or get started early on holiday gifts. We've got Christmas-themed kits while supplies last, including the cookies I used plus some Christmas cats. If you're making it with your stash, you need:
1/2 yard for the main fabric
1/2 yard for the lining
Fat quarter for the binding
1/2 yard Insul-Bright
Batting scraps
2 1/2-inch Double Fold Bias Tape Maker
Binding Clips (super useful, but optional)
Supplies we used:

Insul-Bright: shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.co...
2.5-inch double fold bias makers: shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.co...

I make these as gifts... a lot! 😆. Two little tricks I've learned: draw the pattern out and sew before you cut. I sew directly on the traced line. Then I cut 1/8 away from seam. This process works so much better for me. I also use ready made bias tape (extra wide double fold)... only because I've never learned how to make it myself 😉. I like this method so I may be giving this a try😁

For this novice, so well explained. And the binding portion...wow, what a cool method! I haven't yet made one but I will be doing so this weekend. I very much appreciate your attention to detail such as the hand-stitching. Thank you!

The "hand stitching" on the back and your reason just gained you a new subscriber 😉. I just had that conversation with an individual yesterday. She was trying to tell me that I could save myself some time if I would "just get over" my need to hide my stitches! 🥴

Why do you need insul brite in the top, I would either add extra batting ore just leave it off. That area doesn’t usually touch the pot. Also, if you have a serger, I would serge all around before attaching the binding. That will make putting the binding on easier.

Hi, Love the free pattern for Oven Mitt. I have a question. Can you use Batting Seam Tape to piece together Insul-bright? I am making a 24 wide x 48 long pressing board for Quilts and the insul- bright is too short. Any info is greatly appreciated.
@threadsbyelle6077

I would do the binding like on a quilt where it’s doubled around the edge for better wear instead of a single layer of binding

What size rectangle is needed to get all of the pieces 2.5 inches?

This is such a nice project .I am a novice and I want to know if the binding is 1 inch when its folded ?
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 2 года назад
Linda, the binding starts out at 2.5 inches, so it is 5/8-inch wide once it is turned in on itself!
@shannonway2532

So cute! Does the pocket bit need the insul-brite facing the lining if it’s only touching the top of the hand? Wondering if for that bit l put the reflective stuff facing out with the main fabric you could use both sides of the pocket of you needed too? Does that make sense? Haha
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 3 года назад
You could do that if you wanted, but I like to only use the lining against hot stuff to keep the outside looking adorable!
@donnawoods3588
@donnawoods3588 3 года назад
I agree with you. I was thinking the exact same thing except I won't be putting the insul-bright in the pocket part at all. How often will you pick something up with the back of your hand?
@shannonway2532
@shannonway2532 3 года назад
@@donnawoods3588 - true, though I can see me potentially using that pocket side just to spin a hot tray of cookies or something… if there is a way to burn myself I will find it hahaha So having the insulated stuff facing out on both sides of the pocket just feels safer too me ☺️☺️

Is it necessary to have the InsulBrite on the non-pocket part of the mitt? Looking to save some money as I'm making 14 of them for stocking stuffers. I thought I could use the batting tape to join a pc of the IB to another PC of batting instead of using IB on the long portion of that mitt since you wouldn't be using that part with your body to touch anything hot. Does that make sense?

I bought InsultBrite by the yard from Hobby. There was No direction on Which side of InsultBrite is up or down. I looked online and it says there is no right or wrong side. I'm confused. I made hot matts that you sit your hot casserole dish on. I put the shiny part (that looks like a film) towards the top. THe casserole dish will sit on this side. Is this wrong? Soo soo confused. Now i'm afraid the heat is going to hit the table. :(

@QuiltAddictsAnonymous Год назад
Either direction will help prevent heat but facing the shinier side toward the hot dish will work better.

New to sewing here. I have a few questions. Please, what is a fat quarter and, in the cutting instructions, it says to cut two 7 1/2 inch by wof strips. What is wof? Thank you
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 2 года назад
Great questions! A fat quarter is a piece of fabric measuring 18in x 21in, and WoF means "width of fabric", which means you'll cut across the width of the available fabric - perpendicular to the selvage.

Why do you need to worry about pinning 1/4" down when you sew using a 1/4" seam. That is the only part that doesn't make sense to me. I would just line up the marks. Offset by one.
