EASY FISHING. A cold session on the canal.

Easy Fishing

I grabbed the chance for a short afternoon session on my local canal. Conditions were not great and i could not manage the long walk to a known winter hotspot near a marina, so i fished near an access point. To be honest i knew it could be difficult but i was confident i could catch something! I only fished a whip even though i set up a light ledger outfit. It proved to be difficult, as i feared, but with some changes i managed to catch.

This was not an easy session! Using a take apart whip with a soft elastic gave me much better control in less than perfect conditions with a safety buffer should I hook a better fish. I hope one day to find a cheap tele/take apart whip that I can recommend as they offer great versatility and my Daiwa whip has a hollow top as well as a flicktip giving me a very lightweight short pole and a whip. If you fish places like the narrow Fen drains, or canals, or rivers and stillwaters this is a beautiful tool to use! So as usual the canal gave me some fish when the rivers are closed and as it warms up it will get much better. On another note I’m the competition is closing and tomorrow I will announce the winner. Paul King thanks Paul I will do from now on. I still have two sections of my 4metre whip stuck together that I don’t think are ever coming apart at the mo. Tried everything just keeping it warm and dry at the moment and hoping it unsticks in the future. Bill got me onto whips and I absolutely love them. Faster than using a rod in a match close in for silvers. Will make sure i treat sections in future whenever possible.
@easyfishing1936
@easyfishing1936 4 года назад
Marc Snelling Hi Mark well there is one trick you can try. One person holds the whip either side of the joint and gently pushes as another person grasps the joint and makes a gentle circling movement on the stuck joint, a bit like rowing an oar. I have done this in the past and it works. Don’t use candle wax on a telescopic joint that is okay for worn put over joints on a pole. Some very gentle heat may help but it must be gentle!! If you get the joints apart clean the pole thoroughly inside and out and when you re assemble make sure the joints are clean and dry. Bill

A nice session there Bill over a hundred fish thats great and on the canal. I was catching a lot of Gudgeon at a commercial last week, and some were a good stamp. Theres a canal near me, the Coventry canal which i'm keen to dip a line or two in. Theres a great looking spot where theres some reeds and an overhanging tree on the far bank that are about within my pole range (still on the Drennan Red Range 11m) and i saw some fish topping there..has to be worth a good few fish and probably some decent ones too maybe some nice sized Carp or Tench. Anyway tight lines and look forward o the next one...and never forget that pinch of pinkies lol

Hi Bill, I've had a few sessions on the canal of late and although tough going, they have been very enjoyable, but like your good self I've had to ring the changes to get a few fish. I noticed you had plenty of company in the way of geese, ducks and song birds. I'm glad you mentioned Billy Man in, I also learnt a lot about canals from him. Incidentally, the gudgeon has been making a comeback in the canals I fish this past 2 - 3 years, as a young match angler I became quite a gudgeon expert mainly catching them from right down the inside ledge, but prior to about 3 years ago they had all but disappeared. P.s. there was also an angler from the same period as Billy Makin called Billy Allen, who they nicknamed "the canal king" i think he used to fish with a centerpin, a relation of yours maybe? Tight lines Bill.

Andrew Bolderson Angler Hi glad to know you are fishing the canals. Billy Makin’s tip about fishing a mangled pinkie certainly worked for me on the day. This was a tip I got from matchangling magazine where they are publishing a series from Billy! Loads of birds singing around me and the wagtail was, I believe, a Yellow wagtail on the boat. I am aware of Billy Allen but he is not related but a brilliant canal angler. I hope you are taking care and staying well. Regards Bill

One benefit or maybe two is that lots of people like eating crayfish but more importantly so do the chub, perch, pike, eels and undoubtably the carp as well! The more expensive models do give you more in that you can add the Gopro microphone adaptor, hideously overpriced by the way, but of course they are not then waterproof!! Also you can get a remote control for them. If I had the money I would get the Hero 5/6 Black as the price has dropped considerably with a remote control, but I don’t need 4K or any great stabilisation or other stuff. RU-vid transmits everything in 1080 so as my computer can’t handle 4K I stick to 1080. Incidentally I have used 60 frames per second and slowed it down on the editing suite and the end result looked good to me.Bill

Robert Forrester Hi well I am glad you enjoyed the fish. Any sized fish or species is welcome, regardless of size! Some sneer at small fish but I’m a real fisherman and love all fish from tiny minnows to huge tuns! Regards Bill

Dave Manning Well that’s a matter of opinion and you seem to be in the minority! The object was to show what you can catch in adverse conditions and real fishermen love catching all fish regardless of size or species. Bill
