First of all congrats on getting started with fly tying! Yes... my typical hook size is 14 and maybe some 16's. I typically go with a 1/8" tungsten bead which roughly is the same as a 3.0mm bead. But you can adjust bead sizes up or down based on the weight you want the fly to have. I typically tie them in various weights so I have options when I'm on the water. I have several other nymph patterns that are really effective on the channel. Best of luck!
