Do i need the special vanos and cam tools or can i just follow this procedure and take it right off as long as i dont mess with the cams or chain? THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEOS!

i have videos up of installing them, the m52tu and m54 always strip the head bolts when overheated, they never just blow the gasket since the gaskets are layered metal, i bet when you remove the head bolts they will be loose and will not tighten

Hello Nathan, great channel! simple question: when I was tightening down the center bolts to torque spec (those inside the caps w/ reverse thread) the cams moved slight, like less than/or a tooth. Do you think I messed up the timing? car was just engaged (its a manual) and no lock tools whatsoever as everyone seems to do... It seems to be running fine but it kinda worries me. Thank you!

Quick question on the expansion tank. All of a sudden it’s removed in the clip. Isn’t there a way to move it a bit out of the way? And if you remove the upper small hose, do you need to bleed the system after? Thanks
@Zakis_wonderful_world
@Zakis_wonderful_world 3 года назад
Awsome job, one thing though, I read in the manual that you have to install a special BMW part to where the banjo bolt goes. Then connect a compressed air hose to that part and blow some compressed air into the unit before you take it off. Do you perhaps now why that is and whether it's necessary to that? Thanks much

you said after you took the canos screwes out that you dont need to time anything or do anything with that timing chain at all? the one that goes behind the vanos there and over those running wheels, you can just screw it out and just take it out and replace the broken parts in it and just take it back on agian?

My 2001 bmw x5 has rough idle, vibration when driving, it seems to stop but no much when in neutral, ses light on. Already changed the camshaft both sensors (exhaust and position sensor, replaced spark plugs, disa valve, replaced valve cover and still has the same issue. Said it could be any of those. What else do I need to check?

Hey man, great video - but before I undertake this I have to ask a question. You said as long as the engine doesn't turn over, you can put the Vanos back, does it have to be the -same- Vanos, as I'm replacing mine as my original got cracked. Is it still just plug and play?
@NathansBMWWorkshop

Hello, thank you for the video. I have a 2001 BMW Z3 3.0i that just popped a P011 Code (vanos inlet camshaft, end position not reached). The dealer is telling me that it's something with the VANOS or camshaft position and that to fix something like that I'm looking at around at least $3600. That's about half of what I paid for the car and it only has 64000 miles. You're video has me wanting to try and replace the vanos myself. In your opinion, should I replace the sensors and solenoid first and see if that takes care of it, or replace the VANOS altogether? Will I need to redo the timing?
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
+Ramon Valdez Man i wish that every time i replaced a camshaft sensor i would get $3600 lol, i think at this point you just need to buy a new oem cam sensor for the intake side, the worst case you need vanos seals but that is extremely rare on a car with under 150k miles, i have some here but i like to hang onto them for testing cars i get in, so i am enclosing a link to a oem sensor on ebay for you, they are not hard to install. www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-E46-E39-530i-525i-X5-3-0-E83-X4-Camshaft-Position-Sensor-Intake-OEM-AbE-/351554409628?hash=item51da46949c:g:GfEAAOSwT5tWJLz8&vxp=mtr

+Nathan's DIY Garage I bought and replaced the cam sensor for the intake side. The car seems to idle a little better but the P0011 code is still there. I used an OBD reader to erase it but it came back. Should I go ahead and rebuild the double VANOS unit? I found rebuilt units at www.turnermotorsport.com/BMW-Z3/c-213-bmw-vanos-units-parts.aspx for $275. Is this a good deal? Again, thank you for any advice you give me.
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
If you replaced the cam sensor with a china sensor it will not turn off the check engine light, if that does not fix it and you suspect anyone had ever had the car part and messed with the timing it is surely out of time .
@ramonvaldez2339
@ramonvaldez2339 8 лет назад
+Nathan's DIY Garage I looked at the box that the sensor came in and it appears to be from Germany. Unfortunately I have no way of know if the previous owner mess with the engine at all.

I just replaced the exhaust side Camshaft position sensor on my 2000 528i, 97k miles, it still throws the p1397 code and shows no signal, it is showing intermittent signal on the intake side cps, ( I borrowed a friends Autologic) The car runs fine and then will just stall out while driving, usually upon acceleration away from a stop, it dies, and will not start, I have it towed, and when I get home, it starts and runs fine. (it has happened 3 times in 2 weeks) Does this sound like Vanos seals? Or am I looking in the wrong direction? Thanks in advance, and good video btw!
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
+Ecuador Beachbum did you use a name brand sensor? i would look at the harness going to the sensors, also i would replace the crankshaft sensor since sometimes the ecu has a hard time telling the difference between the sensors.the non start issue is rarely the cam sensors
@clintnix8780
@clintnix8780 8 лет назад
+Nathan's DIY Garage I used a Sensor I got through Worldpak, they said it was OEM. I will try returning it and getting an actual OEM and will do the intake and Crankshaft sensor, thanks for your reply
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
The sensor needs to be tapered at the end like the original, my findings is that one that is the same size to the end will not work
@clintnix8780
@clintnix8780 8 лет назад
+Nathan's DIY Garage it runs PERFECT until it warms up, then it only idles, it will not rev up, but tries to die, and is not drivable. It does a pre-ignition knock when trying to rev.
@NathansBMWWorkshop
@NathansBMWWorkshop 8 лет назад
Crank sensor for sure, i just did a video on this problem, be care full of the bolt since it likes to snap off in the block, those cars you can unplug the cam sensor and the car will still run fine.
