I tried Intarsia woodworking art for the first time and very happy with the result. All the pieces were cut on the scroll saw and then shaped before gluing it all together on a backer board and framed. It was very easy and fun. This is a great woodworking project that makes an excellent Christmas gift. #woodworking #scrollsaw #intarsia

After watching you over the last week or so I could easily see you progressing into basic intarsia, Skylar. I can tell that you are just having loads of fun with your scroll saw. You've got me itching to dust off my Hawk and make some dust! Twenty five years or so ago, I earned a meager living with my portable scrolling station. I featured a Sakura (now PSHawk) saw with a 22W florescent lamp that had a magnifier in the center. I had clamped a 3/4" pine board to the foot rails of a barstool with electrical conduit clamps sized to the stools crossbars. On that board was a "dead man's" foot switch. A Dead man's switch is only active when pressure (in this case, my foot) is applied. I could then start or stop the saw with both hands on my workpiece. To my left was a cheapo HFT 8" drill press, and to my right a cheapo HFT 1" x 30" belt sander equipped with a 120grit belt that I had removed the platen (the metal backing behind the belt) from. This way I could lightly sand edges or do mild shaping like you did with the intarsia. I would rent space in mall walkways and cut for hours on end. Often times people would chose a pattern from those I had available and stand and watch me cut it out. I think it gave the customers a bit of excitement to see the whole thing come together. The RBI Hawk I have now is what I would describe as the lower end of the top of the line saws. Miles ahead of the DeWalt, but not quite as nice as the saw you currently have. Still...I got that itch again...and it's all your fault! 😂

Pretty confident and competent beginner equal to project. I will look up this intarsia, the finished product looks similar the results from oriental techniques. Intriguing and beautiful. Excellent demonstration, Solar. God bless.

I have never heard of intarsia. That is beautiful! I wonder what it would look like if you had used a little bit of blue dye for the water?

I have seen videos that used round over bits in a router table. You are using thicker material. Your method worked well for you. Router would be quicker for you

Sky, are you familiar with Judy Gayle Roberts? She is the “expert” on Intarsia. Check her website if you haven’t done so already. Your first attempt at this looks terrific. I’m like you… tried a couple of small pieces. I’ve got a pattern for a 77 piece bluebird I need to tackle soon.

Yes, I bought all her books and a few patterns. So much to learn! I really enjoy intarsia, would love to start a new “easy “ pattern. I tried to do a rose but didn’t go well

Hi Skyler , it's Grover from zone 10a. This is one of your best videos , 13:55 minutes of entertainment . From start to finish , how long did it take ? Did you remove the video about how to build the 30-60-90 jig for the diamond shapes ?
