I use colored stain more than the wood tones. I do it a little different but similar to you. The black stain goes on and dries, then sand with 120 to get the low areas, then the second color (I like black and barn red) goes on and spot apply the black to fill in any spots. Fun video.

@@woodworkingwithSkyler Yes, this is what I was talking about in the reply I just left. I'll go you one better, I get mine at Dollar Tree!, lol. 60ml(2oz)) for $1.25(Canada). Tye dye, dyes. They actually work really well on wood, no mess or smell, UV protection, very colorfast, I've whole wash bleached a shirt I did with them a few times, in hot water, and the color barely even fades. So many rackets out there. Home Depot, $25 for 8 oz, vs $5 if you know there is no magic in the home brand. Lol, I've used cayenne, turmeric, felt pens, food coloring, printer ink. Nothing holds up to the light, or stays separated at cellular level. Tye dye, the way to go. peace

I was given a large amount of white oak and have been testing and searching for alternative finishes that won't give me the classic golden color. I tried some ceruse techniques yesterday but I think I rushed the drying times. It still gave me enough idea to see it's what I'll be using for my next project. I liked the ink over the traditional stains, it is messy but it does give it a richer color. I'll try it again with more appropriate drying times. Thanks for the tip.

"Decorative grain fill" A' La George Franks. He recommended a weak solution of lye and water. This was flooded on and then the wood was wire brushed, then neutralized with weak vinegar solution. The lye melts the sap in the grain and more color can be squeegeed into the grain. I once made 22 tables, in the early 1980's , for a restaurant - green aniline dye with yellow (Grumbacher) grain fill, in Oak. (the French sell a very fine bristle brass brush - hardware store wire brushes are too aggressive - IMO.

Hello S&S Could this technique be used on plywood,MDF,etc?And i wonder would you be up for a challenge? Could you see if you could get a good finish on OSB board The traditional way of painting it takes to many coats of paint and to much time..Thanks
@woodworkingwithSkyler
@woodworkingwithSkyler 10 месяцев назад
I accidentally spilled some on my plywood bench and it turned dark gray. What is OSB board?
@michealhand1001
@michealhand1001 10 месяцев назад
What Can it be Used For? There’s a variety of DIY projects that OSB is fantastic for and you can use it for both interior and exterior use as it’s weather resistant (check for a stamp on the back of the board to make sure). It’s regularly used for flooring because of its strength and it’s ideal for a workshop or shed. It can also be used for roof sheathing to go under your roofing system or as a sheathing on the walls. But for a creative person or carpenter OSB can be used to create a multitude of different pieces of furniture or cabinetry as well. With a little creativity the sky is the limit with the endless options, headboards, noticeboards, drawers and wardrobes. If you are thinking of using it in the garden, although it’s weather resistant, for permanent outdoor use you will probably want to add some further weather protection. The weather resistant sealant will also only have been applied to the surface of the OSB so as soon as you make a cut into it you will want to add more sealant to ensure that water is not absorbed through the exposed material.

I’m puzzled as to how/why this works. If the black coats the lower fibers, and the white coats the raised grain, how does wiping it not remove the white from the higher surface?
@mikerebman8587
@mikerebman8587 10 месяцев назад
It looks like the black coats the lower fibers AND raised grain, then dries. When you apply the white and wipe it off, you are removing the white from the raised grain, exposing the dried black color, and leaving the white on the lower grain.
@tycox8704
@tycox8704 10 месяцев назад

I recently finished a set of tables for a restaurant using a similar technique that results in an almost opposite finish: black grain with lighter wood surrounding it. To achieve this, I used two water-based stains, black, and then whatever lighter color you wish for the main body color. First stain the piece black, then, after drying, sand off most of the black stain, so that it remains only in the grainy areas. Next, apply a coat of lighter color stain. Where there is black stain remaining in the "grain", it will slowly fade up through the lighter color stain, giving you a light colored wood with darker color in the grain.

I also have been trying to make iron acetate, as per your video, and 3 days later, the vinegar is still crystal clear, and paints clear as well. lol .. I must be missing a brain cell. peace *because I don't believe you are conning us, lol

Did you use 0000 steel wool? The finer the wool the better as it dissolves faster. Did you use it on wood high in tenant like oak, mahogany, cherry, walnut etc? On wood that is low in tenant it will just turn gray. When I mixed my solution it stayed clear for about a week but I used it after 48 hours and it worked but took a good 30 min to turn black. The time of filming that video my solution was about 2 weeks old. Now the solution works pretty much in seconds almost instantly. As for the two colors technique, did you use two colors of top coat? One should be a pigment ( a dye) and the second color should be a colored topcoat. Also make sure the pigment is really really dry before applying top coat. My dye is water based and top coat is oil based that way the top coat won’t reactivate the base colors to mix it in. Once applied the top coat pretty much immediately starts scrubbing it off ( takes a lot of elbow grease). If you feel the top coat is not protecting enough you can apply a clear coat on top once fully dry. I hope this helps. Let me know if works

@@woodworkingwithSkyler Hmm, interesting. Tyvm, it's funny, the details you miss even trying to be focused, cz you don't know they are key details! No I didn't use 0000, but I can wait for that one, good to know it's still coming. I might try a batch with sugar and/or salt. Idk why... lol... and I have been using water based dyes, and I knew actually, that water dissolves water, and oil does oil, but I'd let it dry for days, and it still lifts it up if you put too much... I was more focused on the grain, I thought it was the decider, but as you now know, it wasn't working that way, lol. Have you seen the guy that burns the planks, then sands them, and only the broad dark grain is black, then he uses a neon stain, which disappointed me greatly, they look just amazing imo, but I thought that would be one of my contributions, though I dont think he is really a builder, or at all, but some people will pick up on it. Because the neon I was already doing, but the black I haven't figured out yet. I just completed a cabinet I finished in an orange/yellow, sunburst gradient. Like guitars, why can't we have beautiful colors for our furniture finishes. It does need to be done right, I think a neon pink dinner table probably would end up in clearance, but a neon chartreuse dinner table, in the right kitchen, gives me goosebumps, actually. I love color. I've been trying everything for wood. Aspen ply, maple ply, Spruce-Fir-Pine, Douglas Fir- Larch, dimensional. I'm north. Tx again, peace
