Anthony Note: Lots of people commenting on the RetroTINK Short Circuit saying SCART can adapt composite/S-Video and the Koryuu is unnecessary. This is half-true. The problem is with the OSSC - it’s only *wired* for component/RGB. Those adapters don’t actually convert the signal. Koryuu does.

The funny thing about coaxial cable is that the oldschool implementation of it used a very slow clock speed. This really limited its capability. Now in modern settings you can send 4K lossless video over them for up to 80 meters! That's 12Gbps! Many television studios use this today! Things get even more crazy when you consider high end data centers pushing upwards of 53Gbps on a single coaxial cable!
@a.millernephithegood
@a.millernephithegood 3 года назад
I've tested coaxial cables sending information at 12 Gbps. It's amazing how much data can be sent across them with surprisingly little loss.
@grey5626
@grey5626 3 года назад
@MarcW: that is sort of disingenuous though, HD-SDI using a coaxial cable isn't really using a simple signal so much as a packetized data stream over copper in those instances, similar to something such as ethernet. Moreover, you are still better off running SDI over fiber at distances, just like ethernet! Not to mention, these days there is NDI, if for example you want a 19km cable run. Coaxial is not ideal for that by any stretch of the imagination. Moreover, Anthony *explicitly said* RF. The connector and cable are just one piece of the puzzle, RF signals are intrinsically worse for quality than even composite video, regardless of the cable utilized. At least composite video splits the audio out entirely (usually into left/right RCA cables) whereas RF is just one cable to "rule them all" and do all the signals a disservice in the process.

@TheSliderW
@TheSliderW 3 года назад
@@dvdkon7165 Yeah, as long as it's not analogue of course. That being said, that's only an unidirectional signal like for television with DTTV signals or DAB radios. As bi-directional, most people still receive internet through their phone wires which are basically just a pair of copper wires. You can get up to GB's of speed with those, especially using the G.fast technology which is pretty neat. Same goes for Wi-Fi or 4/5G, your antennas are a simple pair of wires with a fancy tip. All in all, it's the underlying technology that matters and the energy put into them, not the wires by themselves. : )

@dgschrei
@dgschrei 3 года назад
Just to give some additional information from Europe where we actually used those plugs: You don't need additional (active) hardware to get the video signal that goes through the yellow composite plug to work. SCART being the plug of the many pins it not only carries an RGB signal. It also has pins for composite. So all you need is a composite-> SCART adapter. In fact pretty much all consoles in europe shipped with exactly that inside the box because our TVs usually had multiple SCART inputs but at best one composite-in. For Gamecube and Wii you then were able to purchase the separate SCART cables which gave you better picture quality because you were actually using the RGB-pins in the SCART cable instead of composite.

The 5x is hands down the most consumer friendly retro gaming upscaler. It makes Framemeister and OSSC look overly complicated. Doesn't the scart on the ossc support svideo? If they were intelligent, they routed it and you can use a simple wire based adapter to connect svideo to a scart input. Like the one of the new upscaler you are showing. The input mode likely is defined via a resistor, this could also be the reason for the switch on top of it. This way you can also change between RGB and composite, just a voltage on pin 16. Open it up if you can :) Scart was like hdmi, having audio and video in one connector as well as having some additional functions, like turning on your TV!

Think 5x is the one for me. I'm an engineer who mainly focuses in the video encoding domain for a living (modern stuff, video drivers & cameras, not old interlaced & analog stuff like this), the idea of trying to sit down & relax at the end of the day to play my N64 but having to fine tune all of those parameters, and trying to nail the right profile for my console & TV? That sounds like hell for me. At the end of the day I'm so sick & tired of hearing anything video related. Everything "just working" sounds much better. Think it's worth the extra coin for sure if you just want to sit down & play.

Just pick up an old crt TV, preferably a Sony Trinitron or other brands using an aperture grille. There's dozens on Craigslist and Facebook market often free or like $25. These games were designed for crt and look their best on them

The problem I have with these things is that you can get a professional-grade AV scaler used from a company like Extron or Folsom Research for literally 1/10 the price of these things.

@@ultrajonny64 Check eBay for "Folsom ImagePRO," its been out of production for years. Theres a few variants, the original, the ImpagePRO SDI, and the ImagePRO HD. They both are upgrades of the original, the SDI having SDI features (obv) and the HD having more modern connections, and supporting higher resolutions and more widescreen formats. The ImagePRO II series is in production right now, but is much more expensive.

My experience with Mike the creator of this product was awful. I checked the shipping price of the smaller 2x to Au and it was a whopping $60 USD! That’s nearly $90 Australian, and near half the price of the product. When I asked why the shipping was ridiculously priced and impractical, he replied to my email with a picture of a clown (calling me a clown is my best guest). I wouldn’t ever deal with anyone with such a condescending and rude attitude. I don’t care how great this products are, rude creators who have no people skills don’t get my money. Try again Mike.

Loved my OSSC, and used it regularly for a few years, and was lucky my TCL 4k TV actually supported it's max 1200p output. Could never get a scanline mode dialed in that looked really good, and the res switching dropout was always an issue, even with PS1 games like Chrono Cross. Even with FBX's excellent profiles, you may still need to tweak settings for your console. Did not regret selling it to pick up a RT5X.

Would be great to see a thorough video on the Sinden Lightgun, beyond just an introduction to the product. Specifically, a video demonstrating how to use it with both emulators _and_ actual consoles. And maybe show us why it would be helpful for a device like the one featured in this video, to add it's own border for the Sinden Lightgun. Cause, it's not like an NES or a Playstation will even know what to do with the guns signal, right...so, what good is just the border? If you're running an emulator, on a PC or a Raspberry Pi, odds are you're also going to run the lightgun's software too; which has plenty of border options. And hey, this would be a great excuse for you to play with a Sinden Lightgun on the clock, _am-I-right!?_ xD

It's mentioned in the video that the RetroTINK the same tech as the RAD2X cables. I have a RAD2X cable for my Saturn, and I primarily bought it for how well it handles resolution switching in certain games (such as the Saturn version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which switches resolutions between game play and menus). Does the fact that the RetroTINK works like a RAD2X cable mean that the RetroTINK switches resolutions in games as quickly as the RAD2X cables do? Also, in terms of inputs, the RetroTINK 5X-Pro is overkill, so I was planning to get a RetroTINK 2X-MINI solely for s-video support. Assuming the 5X-Pro handles the aforementioned resolution switching properly, does the 2X-MINI also switch resolutions just as well?

That Shining Force II sneak at 15:48 I've been working as lead artist on a project by the name of Legacies of Veridocia that is intended to scratch a similar itch. Check it out if you get the chance. We released a demo a few months ago. Still a little rough around the edges but, while aidmittedly biased, I can confirm that it at least *looks* good ;)

This retrotink thing is the mature version of the OSSC, which is totally cool, but retrotink wins by a million miles imo. Stoked.

The new RetroTink is looking pretty solid. But does it have any options for dithering? Many 16 bit games used dithering to fake transparency and smooth color gradients on a CRT, something that is obviously missing in this video (especially when looking at the Sonic 3 title screen).
@RedRanger2001

Well, the SNES can do transparency naturally... Look at Mega Man X1-3 and Mega Man 7...
