Don't be intimidated by working on your recoil. It's actually pretty easy to change the rope. Let me show you how.

Nutter I need to replace the recoil rope in the 96 XLT I bought this spring that you made the video for about the pawl spring (dog spring). After I got it all together I realized the recoil rope is only about half as long as it's supposed to be. There's been some definite hackery done on this recoil from the previous owner. My question is can I assume about one foot of rope for every revolution of the recoil rope pulley. I've been so busy working I'm just getting to this project. Thanks in advance.

I normally use about 7 feet of rope on an xlt. I basically fill up the pulley and then leave a couple feet to get up to the dash. I normally leave too much and then trim it up so the handle stays tight.

I just bought a 96 XLT special, and seems to idle pretty high, it did idle down after a bit, but when I took it for a spin and came back it was idleing high again, motor was completely gone through, new crank, bored .020 rings and pistons etc, im wondering if it's some type of air leak, just don't want it to lean out and cause any damage, motor only has 200 miles on it since rebuild

Watch the videos where I pressure test engines. You will want to do that to find the air leak.

Where do you get your rope? All I ever see near me is the baby lawnmower size stuff, is it just a nylon braid 5mm thick?

I was using the rope from Polaris for a long time but now I have a roll of Stens brand rope. It's a little bit stiffer than the Polaris rope but seems like it will be OK. I have Stens rope on my ProX currently.

Nutter I am trying to put in a pawl rebuild kit into the recoil of my 96 xlt. My question is in regards to the spring that goes under the pawl. There are two prongs that go into the pawl and the recoil housing. Does the long prong go into the hole in the pawl or into the hole in the housing. The recoil was unbolted when I got the sled and the pawl, spring, dawg and cover and nut were all apart in a bag when I got it. I was told the pawl spring needed to be replaced so I got the rebuild kit from Dennis Kirk.

@Michael Johnson I think this is a great question and many people will have this same question in the future. So I made a video on this. It should be up in 30 minutes or less. Short end of the spring goes into the pulley.

@@nuttersspeedshop I got the dawg kit in and the recoil works now. There has been some hackery done on this sled. The recoil rope is onlt about half the length it should be also I found out. Long story short I fixed the recoil and got the sled to fire up and it purrs so nice. Idles at about 1800 and nice and smooth. I also had to put in an ignition switch as it just had a toggle switch for a switch. It has a new top end and was bored out ( to what thousandths I'm not sure). I'm thinking this sled was an ok buy for $700. Now my 15 year old daughter and I can ride together with her on the 96 XLT Special and I'll ride this 96 XLT. I love your videos. Keep em coming.

I also put new carb boots on both the 96 XLT and XLT Special. On the XLT I had a hard time finding Mikuni carb boots for the 34 mm carbs so I wound up getting Kimplex I think it was. I had an issue with the rubber o rings coming out of the groove on 2 of them and the rubber o ring sticking out into the opening. I found that I could not twist these at all when installing them. I removed the two boots and put the o ring back into the groove and made sure not to twist and they seem okay. The XLT Special I was able to get Mikuni boots and they were it seemed much easier as the mating surface was all rubberized. I used the 1211 also like in your videos but just a real thin film.

@@michaeljohnson1457 I always try to find OEM Polaris Boots or Mikuni. Either way I use the three bond. I agree that the aftemarket boots are not as good. SPI seems to be better than most aftermarket so if I can't get OEM I go with SPI. Kimpex is a last resort for me.
