This is genius. I’ve been wanting to add a ring camera in my backyard but don’t want to make any unnecessary holes. My dad has all his tools to make this holder. I’m going to get him to make one and I’ll be picking up a spotlight cam during the holiday sales.
That’s great! Check out the Eufy cameras. I actually like them and they don’t charge a monthly fee. I replaced my Ring with Eufy. I have some videos showing them.
Thanks for the inspiration. I went with a similar setup but used a slightly thicker wood piece instead of aluminum. It came out very discrete and clean.
Fantastic! I installed three ring cameras around my home using this technique (and the add-on mount for the Ring stick up camera). It is so nice to avoid drilling holes into the house while also being able to adjust and move the cameras easily. Thanks so much for this brilliant idea.
@@TightWadDIY My first Ring Product (doorbell) arrives tomorrow. Will be looking to add cameras soon. because of camera locations will be looking at the solar option.
Great job TightWad! Even if you don't use this exact method it gives you some ideas for options to not punching holes in your home. Hate putting holes in the house.
I really liked your video! It was so pleasing to watch for some reason lol. Ask your wife if I can borrow you for a few repairs and to install my cameras. I love your attention to detail!
Absolutely ingenious! Installed three cameras yesterday in under an hour using this technique. Love the fact that you can take them down and move them around when needed. I had the same question as some other responders regarding the size of screws used to secure the mounting bracket to the aluminum bar. I found that #6-32 1/2" flat head machine screws worked great after drilling a hole using a 1/8" bit. I did have to grind off the excess screw tip on the backside of the bar, but that was simple. Thanks for the great suggestion, @tightwaddiy! I will definitely be using this technique again when adding additional cameras.
Brilliant. Wish I seen this before I mounted mine. I Love my ring spotlight cam and doorbell ring. Worth every penny for it. $99 a yr is not to bad. It’s worth the security.
I wasn’t a fan of the motion sensor range on the ring so I switched to EUFY cameras. Their motion sensor range is better and they don’t change a monthly fee.
Dont throw those "other small screws" away, they are for when you add the "solar panel" you have to slide off and remove the back of the ring cam, punch out the perforated circle, rotate it and slide it back on the back. Hang the solar panel next to the camera, plug it into the back of the camera, and you will see a very small hole that you will need one of those tiny screws, screw one in, it's for the purpose of not allowing water to get into the ring camera. If you don't do this, when it rains water can get in.
The driveway unit got about one month on a single charge so I did add a solar panel charger so it would recharge automatically. The other cameras lasted about 3 months due to less traffic.
Just got one of these the other day and it works fine but the front and sides are hot to the touch. Customer support says the diagnostics shows it fine. Anyone else have this issue?
We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ru-vid.comUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.
Wait.... Did I miss the part of how you connected the solar panel?? I need to see how to make solar cords reach camera when it is that far under eaves. Grateful for advice.
The solar panel cable is pretty long. I just hid it the best I can. You remove the circular silicone piece on the back of the camera and plug it in there.
@@TightWadDIY but, what about strong winds? Doesn't the aluminum piece shake or move ? I'm in Fla and summer storms ( not Hurricanes ) are very powerful.
In a high traffic area like a driveway my batteries lasted about 2 months. I added a solar panel to the one in the driveway and I haven’t had to charge it since then. I’ve actually decided to switch to Eufy security cameras though. They sell lights with a built in solar panel and they also don’t charge a monthly fee.
Thanks for this video man. I will be setting up my ring camera using this method. Also, do you have any updates on the battery life? I’m wondering if I should buy another battery to have 2. Thoughts?
The battery lasted about 3 months with normal use. You can save battery by adjusting some settings. They also sell solar panels you can attach to keep it charged long term.
I think I’m going to do exactly this, but I’ll be getting a plug in one. I’ll cut a small notch in the soffit and run the plug cord through that into my attic. I have a plug box up there. Question: what size screws did you get? I don’t think I caught what screws you bought.
How long will a fully charged battery last? It's on 24/7/365, so you must be recharging the battery once a month or more. Also, does a camera in sun, or snow covered for that matter, tend to shorten the life of the battery?
That's the solution I had used at my previous rental location, although I used a combination of ring spotlight and pathlights to trigger the cameras early. Also since we had a mailbox in front of the rental I had it set to turn on our lights and start the cameras when the mailbox was opened.
Great video! I just got a few of these cameras myself and am looking of ways to set them up under the eaves on soffit so this will be perfect. Question, i read that it is recommended you don't set them up higher than 9 feet high and it looks like you might have gone higher than that. Do you think this might be why the motion sensor isn't as good as you would like it?
I would say mounting them lower would give you better views of faces. Mine is a little high for that. The motion range just isn’t very far on these cameras.
Interesting. In light of the new wave of theft of catalytic converters, I am looking for something to supplement our 12 YO wired motion sensor triggered floodlight. I am 72 YO & on SS and want to mount something near the top of the now unused Basketball backboard that will look down on our automobile. Just having the light is only marginally useful since I have to look out the kitchen window to notice the light is on. And a professional thief can steal your catalytic converter in about 2-3 minutes. I am especially concerned about overnight criminals showing up, since our driveway has no neighbors living directly across from it. I wasn't aware of the 9' recommendation and I am also concerned about exposing these cameras to southeast PA weather conditions. I've just begun researching this. My wife has a doorbell Ring camera set up on her Apple phone. But I would rather have this second ring device set up on an old Android phone that I upgraded from recently. I ended up installing the solar panel on the one in the driveway because it only lasted about 30 days. I did not have the battery saving features turned on though.
It does….you have to had an outlet near by and/or got through the soffit and plug in through your attic @jerson Ramos. I did mine and it works fine….thanks for the video @TightWadDIY!!!!
@@jgill2222 yea i figured it out, it was the angle of the ballhead that was giving me issues. I flipped the ballhead for the angle he has it and now i got it installed.
Does anyone know why RU-vid videos no longer show the datestamps on them now ?? This is VERY annoying. I'm using a Windows 10 computer and there is no datestamp on any of these videos. I don't understand what has changed in the last few weeks or how this is an improvement. The date gives videos context, especially for technology videos. WRZ 2021-12-14
@@TightWadDIY I had to change the screen zoom to 67% on the Chrome browser to see the video date on the screen. I don't know what else changed but at least I found a solution.
wireless cameras are a money pit.. and when you really need the footage... nothing is recorded.. how many times I have clients asking me to find their recording.... NOTHING
