John, you are an inspiration. Your sharpening jig is neat. But that's not what is inspirational about this video. It's the tour of your shop while watching you work. What organization. What cleanliness. You've created a beacon to which a garage carpenter hack like myself might one day aspire.

Very good jig for beginners and machine wood workers. Sharpening without a jig is often a bottle neck for many beginning wood workers.

I just wanted to say thank you for the plans you make. I'm using my time stuck at home building a new fence for my small Ryobi table saw. I had to do all kinds of workaround to make it fit but well worth it. Stay safe, regards from Modernstring Iceland

I made your old sharpening jig a while back and i love it! This one does look more simple to make but it seems like it is a bit more difficult to get a precise angle. I guess once you have 25 once, the rest should be easy enough. Cheers, keep up the great content!

This is an excellent little sharpening jig, but it did take some tweaking to get it right, mostly due to my having to use it to sharpen my motley collection of Japanese chisels. Western chisels are much longer and can more easily fit the commercial honing jigs than my Japanese chisels can. This is because my chisels are spoon shaped and that makes them awkward to fit into most honing guides. Apparently they can only be sharpened by hand, but that's a skill that I've not been able to master yet. So, I built this jig from the pictures figuring I could modify it just enough to fit my chisels. Then I bought the plans. Probably should have done that the other way around but it looked simple enough so I thought I'd try my luck building it first. If anyone's interested, the changes I made are these: 1. I had trouble drilling a hole straight through the back leg (due to a bent 5/16 drill bit it turned out) so I used threaded inserts and M6 wingbolts instead. 2. I tapped the steel bar instead of using locked nuts to simplify the construction a bit. 3. Though I was super careful to build it as square as possible, the back leg piece wouldn't sit straight across on a flat surface so I adjusted my disc sander table half a degree and re-sanded the piece to accommodate for the misalignment. 4. I then found that all my spoon-shaped chisels wouldn't clear the clamp bar so I made that part extra wide (25mm x 3mm) and tilted the screw holes a bit in the blade holder so the bar would tighten flat across the chisel properly. 5. I also found that I had to remake the back leg piece 2 1/2 inches longer to get the chisel to lie flat on the stone. It is now a super-accurate honing guide and it has allowed me to sharpen my chisels to a level of sharpness I've never been able to achieve before. They can now easily cut paper just like in the video, and I've been using them to cut mortise and tenons into my latest project.

Very cool. I really like the idea of building one's own tools when practical . . . especially when they're this simple. Your clamps are pretty-simple, too, and they replace $100s in manufactured ones. We are a tool-making animal, after all, and not just a tool-buying one.

This is fantastic, one small suggestion though would be to make the rear brace wider and arch the rear foot wide enough for the size of your largest stone, then you would be able to use longer strokes for the full use of the stone? Great idea as always.

Hi John, Great video as always. I made one similar from one solid chunk of 2x4. My slight mod was to add a couple of bearings, one on each end of the back piece to reduce rolling resistance. This also allows the bearings to roll over sandpaper with minimal wear when using the sandpaper/glass method. PS - Your mini table saw guide is wonderful. Great for small cuts and less cumbersome than a full sled. That is a truly genius idea from years ago and I use it often.

I use a similar jig. Now turn it 90deg and Run the blade sideways down the stone. You will get a sharp edge with a coarser stone as the grind marks are Parallell to the edge not across it. I start with 220 grit paper glued to an old marble flooring tile. Then switch to finer and finer paper. The coarse paper tile has card stock glued to the bottom to make the first angle then when I switch to the finer stone I don’t have to adjust my jig. The secondary angle happens automatically because the tile is slightly thinner. Anyway that’s what works for me.

You could probably glue some fine sandpaper to a block of wood and sharpen them (as the cheapest/most available option). Nothing really seems to work as well as diamond plates, or wet stones though, they make the process much more efficient

so any time you bump the back foot you lose your angle? and all your stones/paper need to be precisely the same height off the table or the angles won't match? sorry to say I just don't get it.

Hi John, I hope you and your family are doing well and are staying safe. So I purchased the plans for this and have the build almost completed. However I am a little confused with making sure I have the angles correct. I am completely new to woodworking so this may seem simpleton but I ask you to please humor me and help LOL. The front of the side legs and the blade holder are angled at 25° So I get that, but where does the back leg need to be positioned to ensure that 25°? Also, when switching to 30° for the secondary bevel how do I gauge that? Is there a tool or something I use to set the correct angle each time I adjust the back leg? If this is addressed in the plans I may have missed it so please point me to where, otherwise again I would appreciate your help. Thanks for all the great videos, I love your ingenuity!!

I've never used a secondary bevel. Is there any other advantage other than sharpening.
@thecardinalcrew8959
@thecardinalcrew8959 4 года назад
Using secondary bevels speeds up the process significantly. Once you’ve established a secondary bevel, when it gets dull again you have less of a tip to get sharp, this less metal to take away. It’s worth the effort to get your 25 degrees primary bevel, then around 30 for as the secondary.

Love almost everything you make... but this. No fine adjustment. No way to lock angle in or to repeat the angle again and again. Wing nuts are not precise anchors or locks. No roller guide. No precise way to square the blade to the stone. Not going to screw up my planes trying to mess with this jig. Hard pass.
