I know its not as exciting as pulling in a massive trout or a bass but if we are after food, mackerel is the best tasting fish of them all. Looks like a lovely spot!
brilliant video mate, when you talk about more exciting ways to catch them would using a lure or spoon and casting them retrieving constantly be one of them ?
@@calvin-wp1cb hi mate, thanks. Yes lure fishing especially with a light rod is more exciting and more sporting. Like I said this method I used is certainly productive and is what I would use when I’m after a few quickly for food or bait.
Hey, I have just found these videos because I was looking for some pointers to catch mackerel. It was a shock and amazing to find a video of someone fishing my local area. I am looking forward to getting back out and catching some fish, and I might see you at the water. Tight lines mate, great video
Thanks Danny much appreciated buddy. I gave the mackerel fishing a go last night doesn’t seem to be any about just now. Hopefully it won’t be long before they show up. Tight lines
Very good video. Smooth voice, instructing, useful and an all-round nice watch! Im going fishing on the isle of arran for around a week and my main goal is to catch quite a few mackerel. This vided helped me quite a lot. Thanks!
Was on our boat out of Largs on Sunday, couldn't get through the Mackerel, so I switched to a lure, made it more fun. Great video content as always Douglas. 🎣
I recognised this place straight away...spent a couple of wks up there 30 years ago when my dad was working on the base.Beautiful. And great vids thankyou.
I'm new to fishing, started about 4 years ago but don't get to go much due to work and family so still very much a beginner in that sense. Enjoying fishing so much I'm starting to learn more about it. Been out night fishing once so far, loved it, can't wait to go again. Don't seem to get much mackerel around here, nothing like your catch!
A grate mackerel fishing video lovely to see all the mackerel you are catching if you can keep them alive or just cut them straight in half by running the knife all the way from the head to the tail fish the mackerel for big double figure bass love to see the big fat bass get cought.
Cracking educational video, off to Skye soon and will be going LRF for mackerel and slightly heavier for Pollock. Great video, tight lines from a new subscriber 🎉
Its funny as we have struggled to find many mackerel this year so far. We had east winds at the start of the season which lasted for weeks and seems to have thrown the fishing into disarray here. Everything seams to be very late arriving apart from spider crab which came very early. Nice seeing the mackerel coming from the shore like that.
Your welcome, few n far between spots like that on the isle of man, best area on the west coast but every one knows it, if you don't mind an exploration hike there are still a few big shoals, anyway lovely video love a scutch of mackerel great bait and food.
went to isle of whithorn Fished off the cliffs near our shally. OMG !!!! Stunning Wrasse fish where caught from us, Typical duggys (Dog fish) mackies, and some other species... Beautiful Weather aswell for a weeks fishing
Nice session Douglas, I was out on the weekend and managed 4, unfortunately I forgot to bring a plastic bag with me to keep them in 😂 so I had to return them, unfortunately the bait freezer is still lacking bait at the moment 😂
😂😂and I thought I was the only one that forgets to take something to put the fish in. I did remember the bucket when I was at the end of my street tho. Tight lines buddy
Thank you👍 the mackerel in most places in the UK can be hard to predict when they will initially show up. This usually depends on the weather but usually end of June through to end of September will be most productive. They are not as predictable as many think as one day they will be there in great numbers and the next nothing.
The other day I was fishing for Bass. I caught one on every cast and so much so I gave up 🤔 I came out to fish and not necessarily to catch, which might sound strange to some! I had no time to take in my surroundings. I’m sure next time I’ll be moaning I can’t catch a dam thing 😂 New subscriber 👍
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Cheers 👍 I’m going to use the 3.8 more next year and hopefully bring it up to the west coast of Scotland. This year I’ve been using my new boat but the sib is definitely more versatile
You make it look so easy, haven't had a bite this year so far "Antrim coast & loughs". Which is odd as the bait/fry fish where right at the shore in their millions just last week. A well, will catch them soon enough.
Do the mackerel come in close to shore on a seasonal schedule? Your lucky, in Hawaii if word got out that fish were being caught like this you’d be shoulder to shoulder with 150-200 other fishermen. It actually happens here during the summer when juvenile Big Eye Scad come in close to shore.
Many thanks for commenting. Yes the mackerel are seasonal in the Uk and do come in very close to the shore. Mackerel are a very popular summer fish with anglers in the Uk as they are relatively easy to catch, beautiful to eat and make an awesome bait. Some popular areas do get busy, although not like you described in Hawaii😂
Thanks for commenting buddy. With mackerel, there’s no consistency, here today gone tomorrow. Mackerel will be there as long as the bait fish are there.
Hello, Please advise me on what I’m doing wrong. Every time I go fishing, my hooks get caught on the bottom and snap off, and that’s the end of my fishing. What exactly am I doing wrong? Thank you for your response in advance!
The main thing is not to let you weight sink to long. Try casting in and winding in straight away, so as soon as your weight hits the water lift and pause and wind. Next cast maybe let it sink for a second longer. Also try using a lighter weight or even a metal lure as your weight which takes longer to sink and you will also catch fish on the lure too. Many people forget that even when you wind in straight away after casting your weight is still sinking. If you feel yourself hitting the bottom lift your rod up high and don’t stop winding until you get it in. When I go to a new area that maybe a bit snaggy I never let the weight sink too long. Many people think that you need to let your weight hit the bottom before winding in, mackerel can be caught very shallow
@@GeorgeHopcraft for lure fishing, I recently got a 10ft rod from angling active. The stealhead Iconic Ron Thompson it’s a budget rod but great value. Any way the reason I got it was because it is one of the lightest rods I’ve picked up at that price. The 9ft will also work. I went for the 10ft as an all rounder and for the bombarda www.anglingactive.co.uk/ron-thompson-steelhead-iconic-spin.html The rod I was using in the video is the Rovex Captive 11ft, it’s a heavier rod but casts 3oz 90gram easily which I use for light beach fishing for flatties. For a reel I tend to stay away from the lower budget end too many bad experiences with them and they don’t last. For lure fishing I would go for a 2500-4000 size real. Penn battle 3 or fierce 3. They are good quality bomb proof reels with excellent line lay on the spool which is what you want for casting lures. There are many others out there but I don’t like to comment on something I’ve never used. Hope this helps mate. Tight lines
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing lucky I had other food with me. I had every intention of cooking the mackerel on the beach. I wouldn’t want to get stranded on an island with only a fishing rod. I’d starve to death 🤣
@@1983rossco 😂😂 Your not alone , I’ve planned many catch and cook videos that didn’t come to fruition because of that same reason, never goes to plan!!!
Hello. I like watching your videos. I'm from Ukraine. In Ukraine I really liked to go fishing. There is no gear or knowledge of what can and cannot be done. I saw a leak of this place in the comments. Thank you. but there is a question: when does the season for mackerel begin and end? If you fish in this place, do you need a license and where can you buy it? thank you and sorry for the trouble.
Hi, thanks for watching. You only require a licence what we call a permit to fish for sea trout and salmon in this area. All other species are free, however, if you do catch a salmon or sea trout in this area it is illegal to kill them without a license. Mackerel should show up in our waters round about June and will stay about in good numbers to the end of August/September the odd one or 2 will still be about after that but not many sometimes until the end of September. Stay tuned to the channel, I will let viewers know when the mackerel show up, either with a video or a post for subscribers.
May i ask for advice on good locations for catching mackerel? My son and husband have just started out in fishing and they really enjoyed goung mackerel fishing last year. It would be good to give them some ideas where to go so they can spend some time together and maybe even be lucky enough to catch dinner!
Hi I’ve been thinking about where they could go that would make it a bit easier for the lad to catch some too. Greenock can be good behind the swimming pool. Or if they fancy a drive the pier at Ayr. They also do boat fishing trips there if they are into that. One of my very first experiences catching mackerel was at Tarburt pier at Loch Fyne.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing thank you so much I shall pass this info onto them. Thank you, much appreciated 👍 it's a really good skill to have hoping my daughter's will maybe join in too someday.
Just a trace of standard mackerel lures, I explain it a bit better in my other video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jcmviE_lnoU.htmlsi=uHrRMKbZitQN_V6e
Hi mate, I seen a post on fb although they weren’t shore fishing in the Clyde estuary. I thought I would give it a go as there’s been loads of bait fish for a wee while.
