I tasted white sapote for the first time today. There was a big tree, full of fruit, in the parking lot of a botanical garden near me. Hundreds rotted on the ground, so I picked a couple from the tree that was still full of ripening fruit. They were baseball-sized, maybe a different variety from the ones you had. So sweet and delicious: lemon-custard-cantelope taste and it seemed a bit sweeter and creamier near the seed. There were two fat seeds and three that were skiny slivers. I'll plant the fat ones.

You're so lucky to live in the kind of climate you have. I wish I could just grow everything I like. I would love to have citrus and avocados and everything tropical. Unfortunately we have winters down in the teens sometimes and on average in the 30's. =( Ty for the samples you sent. I got them today in the mail. I will wait to try them after I get off the antibiotics so I can see if it helps my diabetes. I did not want to have any weird reactions from all the medicines I am on right now. Can't wait to try it. Thank you again so much.

I'm growing white sapote right now and I have so much fruit. I just wasn't sure when to harvest it. After watching your video, now I know when to pick it. I hope I love the taste! Thank you.

i have a "redland" white sapote tree. the fruits have a nice flora smell and kinda taste like mango. this variety is the select few that doesn't have the bitter taste near the skin; the fruits are medium size but much bigger than the largest one that you held. if you ever want bud wood, let me know. redland white sapote is in the top tier in term of quality just like sir prize avocado.

those were not ripe, if they were then they would be dissolving in your hand kinda like wet toilet paper. if im not mistaken those are suebelle sapotes when they are ripe they turn a yellowish color.
@wendiland
@wendiland 8 лет назад
The ones I had were the most ripe from the market. They have to pick them early to sell. When I waited for some of them to get more soft and yellow, they were fermenting. I'm sure you can have the best tasting ones if you had a tree!

Hi Wendi, nice video as always. We planted a Black Sapote inside the our Permaculture chicken coop. It's a great fruit. We call it the chocolate pudding tree. I will try and hunt down some White ones and see how they taste. Happy Gardening Marty Ware (from Marty's Garden Australia)

+martysgarden Hey Marty! Miss ya! That is awesome you have a chocolate pudding tree. I bet the chicken love them! I have a video of that fruit before, must say the texture is incredible! You should be able to grow the white sapote without problems. Hope you find it. Happy Gardening! :D

Black sapote is a kind of tropical persimon. I have a tree. I don't believe it is closely related to the white sapote. In fact, there are several tropical fruits of central American origin which are called 'sapote' but are not closely related. As I understand, 'sapote' is from a native American language, perhaps Mayan, and just means a fruit.

You should grow one of the trees! I picked up a Chestnut White Sapote from Exotica (Vista, CA) for only $10 and I traded an Ice Cream Bean tree for a Golden White Sapote. It will be a few years before they fruit but it will be well worth the wait!
@GaryVolts
@GaryVolts 5 лет назад
If it was $10 it would have been a seedling of a Chestnut variety rather than the actual tree which would have had to have been a grafted tree.

Not really oily like an avocado, though, in my experience. The white sapotes I've eaten were like guava-ish, cotton-candy-ish pears.

Great video, and the Sapote is also great for getting natural sugar free fiber and is heart healthy. Its high potassium content protects cardiovascular health by keeping blood pressure in check and supporting normal heart function. Its also an excellent source of vitamin C, so it can help maintain firm capillaries and blood vessels. I bet it would also be great mashed and mixed in with you favorite weekly clay mask. Hope you're well and looking forward to spring :)

+Deb Flaherty Thanks for all the info! Sometimes I do take left over avocado and rub it on my face. I'm sure this would make a good, hydrating mask too, but I just don't have enough to make it right now. :D

I bought this tree two years ago from Costco in Orange County, Calfornia for $25 about 5 feet tall. It's about 12 feet tall now. I got flowers last year, but they ended up with no fruits. Currently I have three fruits on my tree. I can't wait to taste them from my tree. I tasted the fruits before and I like them. You can see more information about this tree: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_sapote

@@kari7403 No, I got nothing. Here in México plants, trees spread easily, but we have many worms, crickets, etc which affect flowers and fruit. I have, many but they eat everything; in fact they can kill a whole one. I also don´t want to use chemicals. I´ve got and eaten: peach, pomegranate, fig, mexican cherry of my own garden, but worms invaded my white zapotes.

@@raycastillo6446 aw, I'm sorry to hear it. Hopefully you will have some luck next year. At least you got some of the other fruits. 👍 I hope to have a bunch of different fruit trees like that in the next few years. Good luck with yours. At least you got them to bloom a bit. Thats something. I'm not familiar with Mexican cherries. I'll have to check them out.

You can find the fruit at farmers markets around southern California from people's backyard orchards when they're in season. About $5/lb. You'll see grafted trees for sale at the big box stores every once in a while and people sell seedlings on craigslist in those same areas.
