It never ceases to amaze me how politicians can screw things up! As a owner of an i3 BMW EV in New Zealand I now have to pay the NZ government $87.40 for every 1000kms I travel on NZ roads. This is approx 300% more than what an equivalent petrol powered car pays the government. The result is that new EV car sales have collapsed to just 1/3 rd of what they were prior the tax which causes more pollution because it is now cheaper to operate petrol powered cars. There are no incentives to own an EV in NZ and it really grates to have to pay the same road user tax as a 3.5 ton diesel truck. NZ politians are nuts.

This video really needs citations. I assume that tailpipe emissions thing is true but I'd like to read into it.

BYD outsold Tesla in Q4 '23 and isn't far behind in Q1 '24 and their sales are increasing year on year whilst Tesla's sales have declined comparing Q1 figures for '23 and '24. Saying Tesla "dominate" EV sales is a bit strong. It's certainly very western biased.

According to Bloomberg News (July 1), JD Power just did a report on EVs. Below is a clip of the news article: “But the pure EV makers scored low on the quality rankings. Tesla and Rivian both had 266 problems per 100 vehicles, while Polestar had the most of any of the brands, at 316 problems per 100 vehicles. EVs in general have lower quality than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. While EVs have fewer parts to break down, they also tend to be loaded with new technology that can go wrong, Hanley said. In fact, he said, EV owners “are experiencing problems that are of a severity level high enough for them to take their new vehicle into the dealership at a rate three times higher than that of gas-powered-vehicle owners.”

As a New Zealander this idea that EV is the only way to go is clearly stupid. If you want to the so call clean emissions than walk and don't expect other road users to pay your EV costs. And yes EV will be my next car so long as it is comparable to a ICE car in costs including Depreciation and insurance costs.

I see the first $1 bill going from VW to Rivian in the form of convertible debt. Then Rivian transfers all of its know-how to VW. Then why would VW bother with the $4 bill of additional investment? Wouldn't VW already have everything it needed from Rivian? I think some investors are making too much of this nothing deal. Rivian's impending bankruptcy is still on track. In 1Q24, Rivian lost $1.4 bill. Rivian has never stated they'll ever become profitable. As long as Rivian keeps losing around $5.6 bill/yr, bankruptcy is coming fast

The average kiwi drives a 14yr old car. There taxes went up, they payed for road repairs. While the wealthy urban professionals, got big subsidises, and payed nothing toward road repair. This is what they call "the just transition". 😢.
