Edward Asner lead a fascinating career as an actor in Hollywood but most folks know him from the groundbreaking TV series, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Asner passed away in 2001 at the age of 91. Jeff visits his grave in the Sheffield Cemetery next to the railroad tracks in Kansas City, Missouri.
Born Edward David Asner, he was best known as Lou Grant on the "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" that aired in the 70s and 80s and a spin-off show called "Lou Grant." His career started in 1950 and ended at his death in 2021. For all of his hard work, he received 25 awards and was nominated 47 times for awards. The major awards he won were 5 Golden Globe Awards, and 7 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Cemeteries are interesting history. Just got back from Macon Georgia and visited the graves of the Allman Brothers Band. Highly recommend it. It was an unkept cemetery. Vines and weeds everywhere with tons of soldiers buried there from the civil war. Thanks for getting me interested in visting these. Keep the content coming!

I had met Ed Asner twice in my life in the 90s when I was working for the Henry Ford, a state and years later when I was working at my store here in Kansas. He came by after his brother died in 2017. He did remember me when I asked him about meeting me before. Which surprised me and like you said, he was a very humble guy and very nice to me.

I was just thinking of one of the funniest lines from the Mary Tyler Moore Show's episode, "Chuckles Bites the Dust". Lou Grant said, "I don't want anybody to make any fuss. When I go, I just want to be stood outside in the garbage with my hat on." Thanks for this tribute, Jeff!

Although living most of my life in SF Bay Area I was born in Minneapolis and had a relative that lived a short walk from where the house used as the backdrop for the Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda shows. I remember standing with family along with a crowd once when they were doing some filming outside the home. The house is still a popular tourist destination for drive by photos. Mr.Asner was a fantastic actor and a good man IMO although I didn’t agree with a lot of his personal views. Ran into him once in Carmel and he was friendly and nice.

I live in Kansas City Kansas and in the bordering neighborhood where Ed Asner grew up. Sadly, that street and area is very run down these days, but you can tell it used to be a very good neighborhood. I believe Ed Asner grew on or just off of Quindaro Blvd. I know he attended Wyandotte High School, which is maybe 3-minute drive from me. This area of Kansas City, Kansas is one of the oldest parts of the Kansas City Metro area. In fact, I live in an old elementary school that was built in 1898 but turned into lofts 14 years ago. I loved his voice acting in UP!. BTW, that Cemetery he is buried in, which I didn't know, is a very haunting on cold fall and winter days. It's almost as all color vanishes and everything is in black and white. I sometimes go on photo-safaris around Kansas City and have photographed that cemetery and part of Kansas City a handful of times. That area of town is very poor and run down. That cemetery is off of Independence Ave. Lot of homeless and prostitutes.

Jeff Very interesting story about Ed Asner, I really liked his style of acting. Speaking of Mary Tyler Moore, I was in New York City and was going to attend the David Letterman show and they ran out of seats about 25 before I got in. So the next best thing was go around to the side street and the back entrance to the stage. Who drives up but Mary Tyler Moore and when she go out I talked to her for a moment, took a few photos and she signed the Letterman ticket I never got to use LOL Thanks Jeff for another interesting story and I would have never figured Ed Asner would be buried in Kansas City.

Near the beginning of the year you posted a video and you were talking about how as a Kid, you would write a letter to celebrities and ask for an autograph. That made me think and wonder if that still worked today so I decided to write to the publicist company of Carol Burnett. I wrote a handwritten letter to Carol, and included a large self-addressed stamped envelope, and also threw in a 5-dollar bill in case they needed to add anymore postage. And since her 90th birthday was approaching, I purchased a really lovely Birthday card from Cracker Barrel (the kind you put on a shelf that stands up) with butterflies on it and said a prayer that it would work. And low and behold a couple of months later I get signed black and white 8x10's, one for myself and one made out to my granddaughter Daisy Mae. I had remembered watching an old video interview of Carol, where she said she wrote a letter to a star when she was young and she said "people just don't do that anymore". So I took the chance and wanted to send her a Birthday greeting and thank her for the many years of clean good fun and laughter and told her when my Granddaughter gets a little older and comes to stay a few days with me, I wanted to play her shows for her. I guess she liked that, so she added one 'signed' for her as well. From the signature I can tell it came from a much younger hand than a 90 year old, but that's not the important part. What is important is that I got to send a beautiful Birthday card with a handwritten letter to someone who I had always looked up to and still do. It may just be worth a cup of coffee to someone else, but it's worth a million bucks to me because I made a connection to someone who may not have that many more birthdays. Just thought I'd share. Thanks for all that you do and for inspiring us in ways you could never imagine.

Loved the characters he portrayed. Political views, well... Thanks for another well produced episode.👍🏼 How did you get away with playing "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" theme song(to the length you did)? I liked that.

TV theme songs generally don’t trigger copyright issues.

This was so interesting, Jeff. Underneath that talented, gruff exterior, was a compassionate, bighearted person. Once in awhile, it would slip through on the MTM show... as we saw in the clip, from the final episode of the show. That certainly is a good-sized, family plot.🙏🏻❤️‍🩹🪦

"You know what, you got spunk. I HATE spunk." Loved him on MTM. Didn't care for his politics.

He had a home for years at Shaver Lake, CA. One of a few celebrities which had mountain homes in the area. Rock Hudson also had a mountain home there which he referred to as his hunting cabin. Not sure what he was hunting.

He played the bad guy in a john wayne movie that I remember, And that was a couple of years Before the Mary Tyler Moore show. Apparently John Wayne didn't care for Him being picked for that role Because at the time he was a New York stage actor. Asner said Every day before shooting, Wayne would come out and holler "Where's that New York stage actor at"? 😅
