SERRATED VS PLAIN EDGE - Guys this is a video I wanted to do for a long time but didn't do because 1) I did not have two versions of a knife with both configurations 2) I didn't not think it would be a fun video for y'all. well I solved problem 1 and problem 2 ... well its my channel and I will make content I enjoy. So as far as effectiveness for EDC that will have to be up to you because they both have their own merits and anything said will be opinion.I will say that both of these would be a great addition to your every day carry rotation... and these would fall into the tactical folder category.

Serrations are the way to go for day-to-day cutting, and they're so easy to keep razor sharp with a sharpmaker. I ignored them for a decade, and what I fool I was. The only thing they do badly is wood carving. That's it. At everything else, they just destroy any plain edge competition. Food prep, skinning, meat processing, cardboard, rope cutting, etc etc.

me personally if im going to have serrations i want dedicated serrations not only half of the blade partial serrations do not have enough there to give you the benefits of serrations so ill take one or the other.

I have a few serrated knives that at this point are dedicated to cordage only and I'd say I prefer to have the whole blade serrated vs half and half. Serrations definatly take longer to sharpen than a straight edge, I use some diamond tapered rods for mine but there are so many different types of serrations I'd say stick with a type you can sharpen that they make sharpeners for example Lansky makes a specific ceramic sharpener for Cold Steel serrations or serrations that you can sharpen with Rods. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

Use a spyderco sharpmaker, it sharpens any kind of serration besides the tinny ones on certain chinese gimmick knives.

good video michael emler - i also have the police spyserco. But I have a question for you as a knife expert. I can't choose between a Cold Steel Ti-Lite Kris Plain or SERRATED I don't want to open boxes. or rope and keep cutting or survive. but purely for self-defense. To make large deep cuts in flesh covered with leather or denim. which one is really the best. thanks brother Or does anyone know how to give me an honest answer to this?

Only Victorinox does partial serrations right. It's the correct side for a right handed user, the wavy serrations are towards the tip and it has a straight section at the base for wood working, only basic 1.4110 steel but their 111mm models work well with touch ups :)

All I can think is that a serrated edge can saw wood and meat better, but for stripping down the length of wood stick or for finer detail or combat you want a straight edge. Straight edge is easier to sharpen. I think

I like my knives as knives meaning i prefer plain edge, its just euphoric to have an blade as sharp as straight razor, but that being said serrated blades are awesome, and many people who are bad at sharpening would benefit having serrated blade, and with sharpmaker its really easy to sharpen serrations, belive it or not but its even easier than plain edge, but since you cant just strop them like an plain edge I've used one of those kitchen kife steel hones to finish my serrated edges 😂 works amazingly, ive carried a serrated tenacious lately and it slices phonebook paper really well...
@em4703
@em4703 Год назад
You can strop them like any normal edge, the soft leather will get in every valley easily. The fact that some chinese steel 8cr13mov serrated edge outperforms and outcuts supersteels like k390 in plain edge made me drop plain edges completely besides a few blade in elastic ceramic/HIC from rahven. At least these keep the edge almost twice the amount of use my rex121 custom knives did, which speaks volumes about the differences in wear resistance between these 2 materials. And yes, it also chips less than these ultra high carbide steels. I appreciate the toughness of steel, too much compromise given away for wear resistance.
@Oozy9Millimeetah

@@em4703 i used my spyderedge tenacious hard today what an beast, for heavy cutting serrations are awesome but for precision i like my plain edges
@em4703
@em4703 Год назад
@@Oozy9Millimeetah I agree, but most of my daily chores like most people don't involve much precision cutting, for anything like that I have specific tools in the shop. And if needs be, the tip of my serrated knives can take that task.

Mathematically, serrated gives you 5x more cutting performance. But who cares unless your on a fishing vessle or something. Doesn't really matter when we have steel like K390 these days.

I apprecite your efforts in testing but those are not real world examples. We have to understand why we are carrying a folder for EDC. the reasons why guys "EDC" vary so much....from the ridiculous e.g. I work at Wal Mart and I need to break-up cardboard boxes to "I'm an parametedic or fireman....sometimes need to suddenly cut seat-belt as teh lock mech is jammed....".... I would have instead got some rope....1/2" and 1", seat-belt or a jacket arm, need to make fire---branches.... I'm guessing too...as both cutting edges dull the serrated will still cut better becaus they do still have teeth. .. I feel there are "knife enthusiasts who favour straight edges....making YT videos" and might bias their "serrated vs straight videos"... Logcially it makes sense that in "emergency situations" a serrated edge will be a lot more useful. ...assuming you don't have scissors with the Paramedics should have in thier trucks for cutting open clothing fast...it's when they're out in the field...easier to carry a folding knife with a serrated edge...
