That's why we have the crap we do nowadays. It's all about the money and "glamour". PUT on enough hype and people will buy into it. There is some pretty good music out there, but ya really got to hunt for it. But you're right, not many " artists" care about the music anymore. (I'm talking about you Swift, Bieber etc)

@@terrygracy8345 My friends and I actually thought That Eddie Wilson was a real person and the Cruisers a real band. The dad of one of my friends swore that he remembered the band and used to listen to them back in the early 1960's. Of course this was years before the internet, so it was nearly impossible to verify or debunk such a claim, we just took his word at face value. We figured Eddie Wilson had to be alive out there somewhere and all it would take is the right group of detectives (us group of 11 - 12 year old kids) to find him. We were crushed when we found out the movie wasn't a documentary and it was all fiction.

You have to give Eddie credit. He was an innovator as well as a guy with heart. Even though he’s pushing the band to get a sound he always thought that everybody should have a voice, especially Joanne. He recognized potential and talent, even in Frank, just a kid off the street they didn’t even know. He was reaching for something original and there’s nothing wrong with that. The band needed a voice and Frank was the man to give it to them. Words and music.

For some reason even thought I didn’t religiously watch this movie as a 8 year old, I always knew about its existence and mythos, the whole Eddie disappearing myth and the song, something about it was so damn cool. I remembered as a kid there was some special feeling knowing this story, kind of a connection to this guy Eddie. It meant something to me and I wasn’t old enough to even know what at the time, when I watch it now it brings back that feeling I had as a 8 year old, and for that I thank this film.

This movie impacted not only my teenaged life, when I dreamed of being a musician and writer, but my whole life since those tender years watching HBO. I wanted to be both Frank and Eddie, words *and* music. I already liked Michael Pare from Greatest American Hero, and here he was showing me what could be around the corner, teaching me about the difference between what I wanted, and how badly it could go. Of course, I didn't know all of that then, But now, 54-years old and looking back on my cruising days, I see the movie almost as a prophecy, albeit a lighthearted one compared to what awaited me between then and now. Above all, it taught me to enjoy the moment and live it to the full. And I did. I have no regrets.

There’s a few actors in E&TC who became pretty-big celebrities - Ellen Barkin, Joey Pants, Tom Berenger, - but there’s no huge personalities playing these working-class roles (certainly none of them were stars at the time) which is a big deal afa the film’s continued popularity/appeal. You don’t need to suspend your disbelief much due to having a big star play Eddie or any of the supporting roles, like if, say, Meryl Streep had played Joanne, or if Tom Hanks (an up-and-comer at the time) had been cast as Eddie. Michael Pare isn’t perfect in his performance as Eddie, and I’m not an authority on Pare’s career - I can recall liking him in The Philadelphia Experiment and Streets Of Fire, and I remember being pleasantly surprised that he was cast for a few episodes on Sex & The city, - but I can’t think of a better role/performance in his career. He’s pretty effective in E&TC.

I love the movie and have for years, but do we really need a caesura to think about the meaning of the lyrics "Betty Lou got a new pair of shoes"? Also, I always thought it was a little contrived the way Eddie said Frank's first poetry reading sounded like s*** because only the writers of the dialogue would know Frank was planning a more dramatic reading immediately thereafter.
