Eddie said in an interview that holding the bar longer than necessary was probably causing the health problems, backstage he got blind and for several days he had memory problems. Thor for sure learned from this mistake.
Absolutely And I along with many others would have done the same Did what no one thought humanly possible, and breaking the record by an absolute HUGE margin It was a giant F U to all that said he could never be done, and that he could never do it That 500 will probably be the most legendary lift any of us will ever witness in our lifetime, and I’m sure I would have reveled in that glory and history making moment as long as possible as well (Yes Thor lifted more, I’m not taking anything away from him, but when it’s a lift only 1kg more than what another man lifted and what we all knew was possible there were no impossible barriers that he broke through. A great lift indeed, but was nothing like the legendary lift Ed did)
@@dragon81heart You're definite right. Eddie himself said that nobody cares who walked on the moon 2nd it's about the first man to do something impressive.
@Tyler Vincent probably took some months of his life there. But after the years of torment on his body, that moment was definitely worth it. Most badass 'fuck you all' in history.
@@geraskatinas1846 he is taller eddie is risking his life for how big he is for his height his doctors tell him to stop but ye thor is stronger eddie hall can't be as strong as him he is to short
Thor might have pulled it better and easier. but it was boring af, Eddie's on the other hand just inspired a LOT of people. Eddie also pushed his body to the absolute limit where as Thor did not. 500 is a number, Eddie is an emotion.
Eddie went from 465 to 500, Thor went from 500-501 just to "be in the lead", also not done at an official event. That's why most athletes don't think it's a valid lift.
@@abeedeahmed5626 I believe it was Mark Lobliner who said that a heart pumping blood for 400lbs is at that point whether you're fat or pure muscle, its not designed to operate at that point. Obviously an obese person is worse off, but its still beyond human normal operating procedure.
•Matthew_6905 • it amazes me that people will argue with facts, presenting their own erroneous statistics, when the truth is a mere Google search away. He’s 6’3”
Walkul Battlebeard it isn’t at all obvious that an obese person is worse off. On the contrary, huge amounts of muscle demanding extra blood circulation must put a far greater strain on the heart than pure fat. Of course, Eddie had a huge amount of muscle and a huge amount of fat, and that must be particularly bad for the heart.
In terms of absolute strength it's safe to say that Thor is stronger, but I think that Eddie set a record for pushing the human body and the CNS to its limits. He lifted beyond what his body should have been capable of lifting, which is an achievement in itself.
The pressure under where eddie and thor performed are different as well, many powerlifters have different PRs at their home gyms but not in competition where it all matters.
Eddie will always be known as the first person in human history to ever life half a tonne, the one who did it when no one thought it was possible, the one who set the bar ridiculously high for future competition (he smashed his own world record by 35 kg)
And Thor will always be the guy who lifted it without pouring blood everywhere xD I mean did you see the extra distance that weight had to move for Thor? And he still managed to lift it faster. Eddie lift is special yes, but Eddie fans needs to give credit where credit is due, Hafthor was very very strong here, the strongest ever at the time, remember he's not known for static strength and he pulled that bar so easy, and he wasn't even at his peak at the time, if he maintained that motivation for strongman a couple more years, no doubt, he'd lift 530 easily...
@@names-mars Eddie was probably at his peak form weight and muscle wise (and still was severely overweight) Thor could still gain 35-40kg of mass, but doing so is idiotic if you plan on living long.
@@names-mars I agree thor looked liked he had a lot left in his tank after the lift. But you have to take into consideration eddie revelled in the moment and held the bar for so long, probably what caused all the health complications
@Reece A dude you are so funny, the plates were weighted in front of judge and these were rogue plates, perfectly calibrated. He actually didn’t pull it in comeptition but he was making a form for months and u think he will throw it away for this bcs it is lockdown Use brain next time also he will attempt to pull more on competition his coach said that. I respect and love both of them ❤️
There seems to be two camps here: (1) Eddie held it for too long and (2) Eddie had problems locking out. Both points are completely valid. Because Eddie is a rounded back puller, he’s always going to be stronger off the floor but weak at lockout due to needing the spine at full flexion at the lockout, hence why it seems that he has a “soft” lockout. Every major round back puller in powerflifting has this problem at 90+% lifts. It is also true that Eddie did indeed hold it for longer for the sake of the crowd and the moment. In all, his lockout was about 3 seconds past the knees and the extra holding of the weight was 2 seconds. The majority of the damage was done at the lockout where he’s needing his spine to go into neutral after pulling off the floor with a rounded back. As Thor pulls with a neutral spine through the entire movement, he’s “weaker” off the floor and stronger at lockout. In reality, nobody is “weak” off the floor in terms of pulling mechanism. Rounded back simply gives you less distance off the floor but more spine motion during lockout, whereas neutral back allows you to maintain the same momentum throughout the movement.
And both camps are essentially making fun of a person who's able to shift the deadlift record by around 30 kg's? That's insane to me. Both are incredible athletes.
It’s so amazing to see this side by side comparison, not to obviously see which one is better, but to really value the effort each side is putting into it, and to see how much potential to be able to lift even greater weight.
Every comment thread in this comment section has the same arguments and the same counter arguments: Eddie did it 4 years ago. Eddie is shorter. Eddie did 500 first. Thor did it by 1 kg. Thor is taller. Shorter is good, taller is bad. Taller is good, shorter is bad. If you read this, you can skip reading the rest.
@@GordonHeaney Thor has more torque exerted because of how tall he is. It's like using a longer wrench instead of a shorter wrench to make it easier to screw on a bolt. The argument for work = force times distance aka eddies lift being easier fails to take into account that a deadlift is a hip hinge movement making it inherently a rotational physics problem.
it's actually really interesting to see how similar the lifts are in terms of speed off the floor and then both having that last little lock out battle roughly at the same time too
The pair of these are absolute beasts and have well and truly cemented their place in history. Now they’re having a boxing match; what a spectacle that is going to be even if it lasts 10 seconds!
True. He took deadlifts to a place no one thought possible. Long term Thor physically has more potential than Eddie. And one day some other freak will come along with more potential than Thor who trains correctly for it. The way of the world. The current best strongmen blow the strongmen from the 80s and 90s out of the water now.
@@elyastoohey6621 "Long term Thor has more potential than Eddie", kind of interested what made you came to this conclusion? I'm not expert myself but I'd love to hear from one!
@@BulletESV he’s younger and can already closely match or exceed most of Eddies lifts. That being said, mentally Eddie is stronger. Eddie takes his body to the absolute limit. He’s willing to die. Thor on the other hand wants to retire.
I think both of them could have pulled more when they pulled 500/501. Eddie locked his out faster, but fucked himself up holding it there. Thor had to grind a bit more, but both of them could have probably done 510kg or so
Geoffrey Verity Schofield Nope. 510 was all thor could do that day and not 1 kilo more. They’re both amazing dead lifters that have achieved the half ton mark and I think we should respect them for their incredible feats of strength and not fanboy over one of them and create biases.
@Say Sike Right Now OHHHHH just because you're one year older than me you think you could boss me around huh. Just give me a few months to get stronger and I will beat your ass up and let you know your place little boy
Eddie's body wasnt made to lift that heavy or be that heavy himself but he literally put his life on the line just walking around that weight and pushed himself to almost death to be the first to 500 and for that he will always be a legend. But theres no denying hafthor was born for this , his body is perfect for this level and I'm pumped to see just where his ceiling is. Respect forever to these two Titans.
davidmel2689 your comment reminds me of Gattaca. He won the swim race because he put his life and heart on the line. God, I need to watch that movie again..
He didnt almost die jeez. The dude was at his sons birthday party literaly day after the lift. He got a bit fucked up from the lift be he was fine enough
@@thepope2412 Look at thor's face after the lift when he call eddie out for a box match. he deffinetly looks like who is about to get a stroke.... non of them bodies were built for this i mean humans shouldnt lift that amount of weight.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sCPh8uXw1pk.html
Yeah you’re quite right, tbh it’s a bit of a shame that they’re doing this fight (although the fight will be awesome, no doubt about that) because the training for that will not lend itself to weight lifting in this sense, would’ve been interesting to see if Thor had pushed himself to the same limits Eddie had done to see what he could’ve deadlifted
one did it far easier than the other and was less affected after the lift. Eddie showed he was at his limit with this lift. Thor could probably add 5-10kgs to this and call it a day.
@Jordan He started bleeding during the lift. Takes more effort to do the pull than to stand there and hold it too. I mean, still heavy as shit and hard, but those are the facts
Reid Tebbutt fucking where in the last comment did I say Thor didn’t break the record, bottom line the point I made was 501 is fucken heavy delete ya self
Eddie's style is more explosive but you can also tell that Thor's frame is better suited for the repercussions that lifting such heavy weights inflict on the body
@George S are you dumb? They both would have underwent immense training. Idk about Thor's specifics but Eddie went thru immense psychological training where he basically had to trick his body into thinking he was deadlifting a car off of his child. Can't believe you even made that statement
Respect to both of them 🙌🏻 they were able to deadlift that much ,don’t matter what beef or debates going on about em, they both deserve that respect ✊🏼 plain and simple.
IMO, Eddie made the lift of his life.., Thor has more to go... What they have both achieved is epic... But Eddie did it first... Lifted a weight not thought possible... Which inspired & challenged the mighty Thor...
Honestly I believe a big reason why Eddie suffered the way he did after the lift is because of how long he held it after he locked out. Incredible how he held it there for that long. Not taking anything away from Hafthor. I’m a huge fan of both. There both incredible strength athlete’s
Both these men are truly amazing, Eddie proved half a ton was doable and in effect pushed the sport way ahead, what was once an amazing dead lift is now only very good by strong man standards, the bar has been raised
The Shit After all these years ANYBODY should have noticed that height doesn‘t mean shit when it comes to deadlifts. Eddie is 1,90 and still lifts more than anybody shorter than him(which is 95% of world population)
Eddies shaking like a dog taking a shit, Thors is much smoother and travels further. It seems like most strongmen have more then enough power of the floor but lack lockout so that's how I'd judge the difficulty of the lift. Thor definitely had more in him and Eddie looks like hes very close to max
@@theunusualdispenser9474 Don't forget that event wasn't specially for deadlifts only, it was whole ass strongman competition in which he had to participate in other events like wheel of pain as well.
I mean that’s not an excuse. The extra height also gives him extra strength so it cancellers out. Can everyone stop sucking off thor. He lifted one extra kg. Well done
@@samhalteman6421 Actually....in Deadlifts, taller you are, the easier it is. That's why all the shorter guys don't have a huge ass deadlifts lmao. Pretty much all the taller guys holds the record for the biggest deadlifts.
Gotta remember the big jump in what was done in weights, Thor had 4 more years to build up to that feat and now sits very strong thanks to those extra years of training. He is a savage right now. Crazy strong
Eddie keeping his lift in the air so much longer then needed. Both men did an awesome job. I don't think 500kg or 5001kg is any difference. That is just setting a new record for the papers.
Eddie's lift is still more impressive for a few reasons: He did it first a long time ago. Given how long he held the 500kg, it's highly likely he could have done 501 that day. Thor beat a 500kg record by 1 pathetic little kg. Eddie beat the previous record by 30kg. Thor, because of his natural giant height and frame can more easily pack on the 200kg+ of bodyweight required to pull these ridiculous deadlifts, so it looks 'easier' for him because his cardiovascular system is not being pushed to warning limits on the lift, unlike Eddie's 6'3" frame which was constantly in the red at 200kg. So Eddie had to push himself harder and to greater limits than Thor.
So? Hafthor said that he has already deadlifted and can deadlift 520kg. Ofc not officialy but i doubt he would lie. Plus Ed is a big wuss for saying that he could deadlift 550kg. Hes just a big egoistic man rn
@Mister X it seems like he couldnt drop it, I think he was unconscious for the amount of weight, cause in the other lifts you can see he had more control
Mister X it actually was a perfect environment. It was in his own country, the event was made for him, with his jumps and rest time and his bar. He held it at the top for 2 seconds longer than what he should have, the rest of the time he couldnt lockout properly. Check his 420 and 465 knee’s and his 500 knee’s. No hate towards Eddie and his fans, he’s a great guy but Thor is just stronger.
It’s almost incomprehensible how impressive this is. It wasn’t that long ago that a 1000 pound deadlift was “impossible” and now we’ve got two guys over 1100. And Thor looks like he’s good for more
same here.... nothing better than seeing 2 guys head to head competing against each other... one dropping out or failing a lift only to cheer, encourage and supporr his victor.
It's not bickering, it's trash talking between Mayweather and Mcgregor, these two are gonna step in the ring and make money they've never dream of even seeing before thanks to the promotional beef for the fight.
@@aaron4820 if you're not a strongman or a game of thrones fan, nobody else in the world knows who Eddie Hall or Hafthor Bjornsson are, it will be awesome if/when it happens but comparing the money this fight will generate with Mayweather vs McGregor is insane imo. I'll watch but how many more people will? And I hope Im dead wrong.
No one can deny that Eddie was phenomenally strong at his prime. I feel though that he was closer to his physical limit than Thor was for what was essentially the same lift. Had Eddie continued trying to max the envelope further, I fear we'd have been eulogising him now, rather than celebrating him for being the first to lift 500kg.
Hit the nail on the head that's why I'd much rather see Thor compete than box, I feel he was only just getting to his potential and could have easily become the goat
eddies straight said he shouldnt have done the 500 numerous medical proffesionals warned him not to and hes lucky he didnt die there and then in that arena that night
That is true, and quite frankly I don't want to haha, but I do have goals of reaching 250kg one day natty. And I have a goal of 140kg this year, which I think I'll easily beat and will have to up by 20kg maybe even 40kg
Eddie hit his absolute max, Thor has more in him. That was an awesome side by side, Thor definitely handled it better! I believe we'll see more from that mountain of a man.
Allow me to explain with science and math what went on: Eddie pulled 500 kg Thor pulled 501 kg 501 > 500 I hope my extensive research has helped clear up any confusion.
Eddie did his in a comp not in his own gym with only breaking a record to worry about. For someone so much bigger then Eddie makes 1kg win look pretty pathetic
@@goodfty You're a dumb moron, he also has a longer torso and legs, in fact his arms are pretty short compared to his height, Brian shaw has much longer arms even though he´s 1 inch shorter
I appreciate this. Side by side, really an identical pull time wise. Frankly the one kilogram makes no difference so I guess we can conclude that they are both strong.
Being taller is actually a detriment in terms of the dead lift, so the fast that Hafthor made 501 look so easy compared to Eddie with such a massive height advantage says quite a lot. I think Hafthor could've pulled 520 but I feel like he's conserving his body for competition now instead of just destroying his body for one lift.

He had an official representative there when he did it I think, so that might be what makes it more official than just turning on a camera and do it in ones backgarden.
