What ever it is... that Burl put a spell on us! Thank you Eddie Kramer for being the genius soundsmith/producer behind the desk, capturing Jimi's moods for eternity!!

Yes the JH Concerts is a great sounding disc ,maybe the best sounding live Hendrix, but I can tell a huge difference between vinil and CD for this same master. Each technology its own characteristics

I have to agree with Quentin Wallace in the below comment. The 6 tracks(from winterland) that are on the "Jimi Hendrix Concerts" album produced by Alan Douglas are superb. The mix, the mastering, the ambiance is fantastic. Ive just picked up the 6 CD, 6 shows Jimi played at Winterland. Its great to listen to as a historical document but the mix & mastering is nowhere near as good as what came out on the "Jimi Hendrix concerts" Someone needs to get that guy who did that album back on the case if he is still with us. 37 years since it came out.

You are right . I have the Concerts album with some of the winterland recordings and the Ryco disc Live at Winterland and the newish Legacy Winterland reissue 4cd remastered box set. The recent reissue sounds flat and dull . The concerts album and Ryco disc also produced by Alan Douglas back in the 1980s has much more dynamic range , clarity and definition then the latest winterland box set .

Burl is truly all that he is talking about, BUT!!!!!!!!!!! The only reason I know this is because I did an a/b shootout with other top converters. ;-). I wish Burl would do this in several different instances. Then, they could PROVE it to people here on youtube. Now break out those pipe cleaners & your best cleaning fluid and clean out every single mic cable, input and output jack, and your patch-bay!! Don't forget your guitars and amps etc.....

All Eddie had to say that it adds extra stuff to the tape. From a tape user i can now see this linked to my 2 inch. I'm Sold! Sorry I'm late to the game Burl.

No one going to mention the ending? where noel makes a horrific buzzing distorted sound after the song and talks into the mic and jimi says "How about jackass noel redding, and mitch mitchell" as noel redding tries to talk over him. Those two just couldn't stand each other but Jimi was a great bandleader.

hey fawbak. jimi didn't diss Noel onstage. check your ears. Jack Cassidy guested and that's who Jimi thanked.

You're not alone haha I heard "how about Jackass Noel Redding..." but listening again I realized Jack Cassidy of Jefferson Airplane sat in on that performance, he's saying Jack Cassidy.

Winter land is a great disc/ but I prefer Clark University 1968...it's raw amplification...and power

i use a radio shack cassette recorder with maxell high bias tape. i put the recorder between 2 boston acoustic 70 watt speakers that i power through my hafler pre amp and amp (tube). i use a bang and olufson turntable and play vinyl. i take the tape and play into computer mic make a wave file of that then i burn that onto a cd and it sounds killer

I think the Winterland stuff sounds OK, not amazing just OK, a bit flat. There is something about the Alan Douglas live stuff that's just more exciting sounding. But yeah pretty much all the Hendrix studio stuff available to buy now sounds horribly flat, harsh and overcompressed. Original vinyl is the way to go with Hendrix. The original Reprise CDs from the 80's are OK but they could be improved upon if they did it properly. I can't work Eddie Kramer out, he gives us all this technical wizardry info but then the end result is all fucked up. Has he gone deaf? Has he been told to make everything loud and compressed?
@p0llenp0ny
@p0llenp0ny 6 лет назад
I'm just assuming he has lost all objectivity and is like "I'm Eddie Kramer. Anything I do has to be amazing." Wrong, Eddie. Time to let another set of ears take the helm. You've fucked up too many times.

Yeah I think maybe Kramer is working for Jamie Jimmy sister whatever that has the holes on all the music and probably makes all the decisions and Kramer imagine talks what he knows and does was she says and kiss paid well too her I guess she figures the quick buck off of the records will be the same this really good well done or if it's just good out there some of the CDs I've heard really are bad Eddy gets to at least work on and talk Jimi vs no Jimi at all for him???????? well

Eddie always claims to know the sound Jimi was ‘really’ trying to get. I’ve kept up with Eddies interviews on Jimi for over 20 years and a lot of what I hear is bunch exaggerated mysticism. They also edited parts out; example: the long version of Are You Experienced. I didnt realize it was missing parts till I heard a bootleg of the same show. Why was it edited? Oh, thats right: Eddie ‘knew’ Jimi didnt want those bits in..

And yet 50yrs later he's still responsible for the Hendrix sound (entrusted via the Hendrix estate) and here you are - just a grousing anon troll on RU-vid. lol

Way too many links in the chain. Play the multi tracks and mix into a stereo master using all analogue equipment. Keep it simple and use the best analogue available. As soon as digital is involved, then that's when the sound gets screwed.

You know i was 15 when i first Jimi...the recording studio stuff was great...the live albums back in the 60s SUCKED.....i mean i went ti alot if concerts and the sound was great .I sat in front rows...sides and in the back of the stage.I wouldnt by a live album..was it the concert hall or the engineer's ,i think the engineers or equipment..Everybody points there,finger at someone else.This pass summer i went to a concert at jones beach an outdoor stadium by the atlantic ocean.I have been there alot over the passed 50 years...I saw Edgar Winter sounded great,then Alice Cooper again sounded great...the stars were Deep Purple the sounded terrible.The engineer had the vocals to low and the band to loud...You couldnt here him sing...And they never corrected it...How come ???? Was it his mic ? or the sound system or engineer ? I know it wasnt my hearing because the people i was with said the same thing .I like deep purple.....but not that set.

I have no idea what Eddie Kramer has been doing in the last 25 years, but seriously, the 80s mixes of some of the winterland stuff, was much better and fatter, in the older days of Alan Douglas,. All the mixes of all of the Hendrix stuff since after Alan Douglas lost control, sounds like the worst compressed disjointed shit.., the drums sound so thin and lack the real thickness and warmth of the original recordings, the bass is crap [usually sounds like a fart], and jimi's guitar sounds so digital, it is so horrible. I can remix stuff at home and get a better sound ,but seriously, they are not giving us much to work from,, seriously, get your act together.. this is 2017 for Gods sakes!!!! the only recording that was half decent was west coast seattle boy, but even that one they stuffed it up, with the drums sounding much thinner than the original bootlegs even...Hendrix's mixes of his studio and live recordings are the biggest skandal and biggest shame for a long time in the music industry.

Yeah. Even though I´m a huge fan of what Eddie Kramer achieved in the studio with Jimi back in the 60s, I tend to agree with you. The original releases of The Jimi Hendrix Concerts and Live at Winterland were the two first Hendrix albums I ever got. And they still stand as references of the best Jimi has ever sounded live. Here 30 years later, I still enjoy them on regular basis.

Tha Man -eddie kramer and alan douglas were the masters at getting it right.i esp like alan douglas' touch in peicing together of 'Crash Landing' and 'Midnight Lighting' ,was near perfect.not so much talking about sound quality here,just concepts.
