Edenpure Heater is it better than any other space heater?

Showing my several space heaters I have including the Edenpure infrared quartz heater. Does the Edenpure live up to its claims? Does it work any better than any other space heater? Does a $20 1500 watt heater do the exact same thing as a expensive 1500 watt heater? An honest opinion from someone that has used over 10 different types of space heaters in my life.

Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to do this video. It's this kind of review that really makes the internet a valuable resource. Real, thoughtful, unbiased, consumer based review from someone who has a real interest and working knowledge of the product while being able to deliver the information in under 10 min without a lot unnecessary fluff. This is more valuable to me than 500 commercials. Thank you.

I grew up in a house with base board hot water radiant heat. The circulating water was heated by a natural gas furnace. When I left home my first house had an electric heat pump system. Every winter I lived there was miserable. I had itchy skin, dry eyes and sinus passages, and I always felt cold. My second home is a little better because I have a gas furnace, but it's still nothing like my parent's house with the base board radiant heat. If I ever build my dream home it will have radiant heat. It's just silly for someone to provide a mathmatical equation showing that all heat is the same. I'll tell you what: you live with your electric heat pump and I'll live in a home with a system that feels better.
@geoexchange12
@geoexchange12 5 лет назад
All heat (delivery) is not the same. All heat (amount) is the same with the same electric input with electric resistance heat. Convection, radiation, conduction, and a combination of those can feel different; and different people prefer different delivery methods. I love radiant heat, but not over forced air. That's my opinion and I won't argue that with you because it's just an opinion. The point with all of this math and science is to disprove the claim that these heaters are more efficient than any other electric heater. In your own example, you liked radiant better. So tell me how an oil-filled electric heater (purely radiant) is not as good as an Eden Pure? Neither is the best, neither is the most efficient on the market for your home, but the Eden Pure is NOT more efficient, and does NOT put out more heat than any other electric heater. These expensive heaters will not produce any more heat than any other heater with the same wattage ratings - and will not save you money.

This guy in the video is RIGHT. I've been trying to solve this problem for my Bug-Out Van for a very long time now with various space heaters (as it gets real cold on the East Coast). I measure the wattage of each of my space heaters with a Kill-A-Watt. I just bought that little Pelonis white heater at Walmart (that he has in the video) because it was so cheap ($10). It says 600/900/1500w but the actual wattage is around 528/772/1175 watts (lo/med/hi). My Tatung Heat Devil, that's about the same size but 3x heavier, bought in 1999 ($40), heats the van much better (750/1070w lo/hi). Both blows the heat out by fan. My Lasko Ceramic upright unit (934/1312s lol/hi) that's about 3-4x the height with about the same width ($70) also loses to this Tatung. The best is my Presto Heat Dish ($60) but it takes up so much space (816/820 lo/hi). I'm thinking real hard about this Eden Pure. Main problem being it's so big for my van and it ain't cheap. But not all heaters are the same at the same wattage, that's FOR SURE.

MiamiCOIndiana Electric costs?
@MiamiCOIndiana
@MiamiCOIndiana 10 лет назад
KingRatt Many variables....cost of Kilowatt in your area...how well insulated area you are heating in...how large space...how cold outside? I find in mid winter my ave cost is $60-$80 monthly to run my heater.
@KingRatt
@KingRatt 10 лет назад
That is a substantial increase to ones electric bill.
@MiamiCOIndiana
@MiamiCOIndiana 10 лет назад
KingRatt Yes I will be first to tell anyone it WILL increase your electric bill a very noticeable amount. However using my natural gas furnace cost was around $150 a month. My gas bill in winter was a constant $150-$175. Now it is completely shut off with zero gas consumption for heating (I do heat water with natural gas) and my bill runs around $15/month. I figure I'm saving in the range of 35-50% switching to the EdenPure. Even better the comfort level is way superior to the natural gas. The heat with the EdenPure is so even and warm with no "cold spots" in any room while using it. The gas furnnace gave blast of heat then the house would get chilly before the next big blast. EdenPure provides constant even heat.

I am beginning my second heating season in a 1934 cottage-style house with an oil furnace. I was not expecting to pay the oil company $200 monthly ($2400 annually) to heat my home from October to April in eastern WV. Even though my oil heat is very comfortable, it is way too expensive for me. I have replaced all the windows in 2013. I just learned of the Eden Pure heaters and really appreciate the comprehensive video you produced. I too have an assortment of space heaters and really want one that will do the job!

I will have to check this out! I currently rent a house with a cool living room. I recently got a small fan forced electric heater for the bedroom and a large oil filled unit to help out the central air unit in the cool living room. Heating a small room is easy for a small cheap unit but for a small house (we have about the same sq footage) this might be a very good option. Great video, thumbs up!

Worked in a rather large private school they still had the radiators with the thermostat apaptor added. The school was rebuilt in 1923 and the radiators got pretty hot. I read that radiators of the old days was more efficient then the stuff we use today. Just have to keep a boiler going, they converted the boiler over to natural gas to save money.

The bottom line is that all electrical heaters are essentially 100% efficient. Since all energy dies a heat death even the electricity used to spin the fan ultimately becomes heat. EdenPure and its knock offs claim to be infrared heaters but in reality are fan forced space heaters. The reason being is that the radiant heat is absorbed into a heat sink with a fan blowing over it to deliver hot air into the room. However none of that matters as Jay Hammond has correctly posted. People that have the EdenPure are more likely to defend it rather than admit they were suckered. If the EdenPure were more efficient the EPA would be pushing them, but again they are not true IR heaters.

I guess I cant tell you if they use less energy or not if thats your argument, but i can assure you they definitely do a better job of heating.

I have a couple eden pures. One is the older model and the newer model like here, with remote. The older one is running on one element now days but I use it on my birds at night during winter months. The newer one is really nice. I used to run a honeywell and I really liked that heater too. But the edenpure with remote- put it on setting 4-6 and it'll heat up whatever area your in. It's on wheels but still have to lug it around steps. We have a pretty big home. Been running for 3 winters now. The elements have held up and clean the filter before each season. I think a lot of the reviews are from people who don't own one. I got mine off Craigslist- 180 for both. Saves over the gas/electric central air which costs a fortune to run. Can put out the pilot light up there too which saves a bit also. We run solar so electric is better for us. I can see why people would pan the heater because it is noisy. But the newer one has better settings and the noise isn't so bad. Moves a lot of air. The honeywell was quiet and I think it did rival the edenpure on low. If your easily annoyed by noise this will cause you to roid rage probably. Happy owners aren't making videos. My sister owns one too, up in northern Michigan. It gets pretty cold up there. I might fix the older version some day, or not. It does pull less power with elements out and seems to be the right temp for the birds. One time I rode the broken edenpure down the driveway and it flipped over.

I have a fairly large house and the central heat is 15kw. Without space heaters, my central heat simply can't heat the house effectively and just runs and runs even when set to lower temps. In one hour of continuous running, it will use as much electricity as TEN 1,500-watt space heaters combined or the equivalent of one 1500-watt heater for 10 hours of continuous use. So, that's a LOT of electricity, and believe me, I know it when I get the bill. I use two infrared heaters similar to the Eden Pure and find them effective to heat larger areas fairly well and they definitely keep my electric bill lower in winter months. Another advantage is they're fairly quiet compared to most other space heaters with a fan. I can sit right next to one and watch TV w/o any real problem. Other fan-forced heaters can be quite noisy, so much so I can't stand to be in the same room with them.

Thanks for the comment. Some still are stuck on the idea that 1000 watts = this much heat end of story. The proof is in the comfort and the results. I also tried 2 oil filled electric heaters with fans behind them and didn't even come close to heating my home. This ONE Edenpure set on medium setting which is around 800-900 watts of power can easily heat the entire house. It simply works that's all I can say, where the others can heat small areas the Edenpure can heat large areas efficient.

Great heater, I have 600sqft upstairs in my home built in 2003 .this is where I live in the winter to save on power bill, I do not heat the downstairs with my central heating at all unless I have company from out of town , my power bill in a 1800 sqft home is $65.00 a month only because I have electric eater heater .before I purchases my edenpure my power bill ran 135.00 a month in the winter using my upstairs central heating so essentially I have cut my power bill in half.
@MrJackanapes57
@MrJackanapes57 8 лет назад
All electric heaters are 100% efficient. This means that all the electrical power is converted to heat. Of course the unit with the larger fan will move more air through the heater and thus distribute that heat throughout a larger area. The only way to get more than 100% efficiency in heat from electricity is from a heat pump, basically running an air conditioner in reverse. This is because heat is extracted from the colder area outside and transferred to the warmer area inside. Your refrigerator does a similar job when it takes heat from inside and moves it outside the box.
@geoexchange12
@geoexchange12 5 лет назад
Also remember that the energy from the wall outlet is finite. The fan takes energy (which also produces heat) away from the heat elements. Just because it has a fan does not make it more efficient - it still puts out the same amount of heat. I'm glad you get it - I still can't believe people buy these, and vehemently defend them.

I have 2 Eden Pure Gen. 4 heaters , that I bought back in 2012. I only ever took one out of the box to use. Only in the last 2 weeks or so, it finally Quit. It would run for 20 minutes or so , then no heat. Just the fan running. My way of thinking always is, was, if it don't work , what do you have to lose by Taking it apart to investigate why. With the technology today, in cell phones with cameras , you can just take pictures before you start to disassemble. If you can't fix it, you're no worse off from where you started. If you do fix it, hooray ! You just Saved yourself A lot of Money. Right now I'm just waiting for the heating elements to be delivered to my door.

Although this review sounds very sincere, it is mostly anecdotal. I prefer the other video since it was more scientific. I also agree with the other video in that all 1500 watt heaters put out the same amount of heat. The CFM argument is a good point, but you can get a similar effect by putting a cheap summer fan behind an oil radiator heater.

I burned up an oil rad that way in my garage, they aren't made to be on all the time, or really to be on high. They are made to cycle on and off. There a different used quite a bit of different types of heater over years. Infrared works great the best hands down. It the only heater use now as only one that lasted now over 2 years. I just had a Lasko ceramic catch fire the other day and was only 6 months old and on a 20 amp circuit and Commercial grade outlet. Plus never put out as much heat as the infrared quartz one does. The infrared one built much much better. When that one when out replaced it with another 6 quartz infrared one. The oil based ones are good when used correctly. I have just one due to safe for birds due to no PTFE. I use the oil one to maintain temperature.

Infrared is nice it doesnt burn up the oxygen or humidity in the house. Some apartments near Seattle still have inside the wall space heaters and they get soo hot. A law was passed outlawing them in the county but a lot of landlords are skirting the issues and never replacing them with a normal duct system or a Mitsubishi no vent unit which hangs on a wall and vents outside the building.

A Christian friend of mine recommended infrared heaters when I couldn't heat my 37' x 7.5' x 7' camper in the cold weather. For 5 years before that I had used two oil-filled radiators in my older camper. This newer camper is much larger, which I didn't take into account. My friend loaned me his new infrared heater and the difference was like night and day. It's heat production is much more dramatic. Since then, I've bought 3 of them and heat my entire camper in very cold weather outside. When it's under 29 degrees outside, it used to be 54 inside, until I used 3 infrared heaters. Now, it's 66 for a low temp inside. When it's 35 outside, I have to turn one down to 66.

I liked this review. Surely not scientific on what is the "medium" settings/light bar for your heater are actually heating at. Just references to go by on what works for your system. Good info and this can be adjusted/reset/calibrated. So without taking a watt meter to record the useage at what reference light setting, to what temperature differential vs CFM, heat gain/loss of your structure etc.....I again liked this simplistic review and also why I use the edenpure. (I know, hell of a sales pitch for sure) I own two of the A 3705 edenpures to heat my home instead of my factory electric central heat furnace in my 8700 ft3 mobile home. First of all, my homes factory unit runs me about $400/mo when the temps hit around 0 to +20 degrees outside to maintain a 66-68 degree indoor temperature. The 2 edenpures in the low to medium reference light indicators with overhead fans have maintained my home in -20 degree weather for 3 weeks straight for half of that cost. (Sure, I have overhead fans in the vaulted ceilings, and that helps.) I rebuilt my very first A3705 last winter. Circuit board did take a hit and needed to be replaced. Circa 2005? Not bad actually for it to finally take a dump. I use space heaters and incandescent bulbs for my welding rod storage, in the well pump house, or in the barn for the animals . Not in my home. The Gen 3 is a win for my needs. Thank you for your video

I just saw your video. I agree, it's a very good heater. I've had my Edenpure, same model as you, since 2012 or 2013. I still use it for supplemental heat but I did use it for main heat in a 600 square foot room for a couple of winters when I first bought it. The room was not insulated and the ceiling leaked in several places when it rained, or during winter thaws. I live in Vermont. Let me tell you, when it gets down to -20 degrees F, this will not keep you warm. It would get my room up to the low 40's, which I survived. I do believe their material clearly stated not to use as a main heat source, I just want to throw that out there, I do not blame Edenpure for my miscalculation. When the Edenpure runs 24/7 on high, it chews up the juice. I was paying $400 electric bills. Overall, I love it. Works great in the spring and fall. Heck, it does a great job down to 30 degrees F or so, but if you live somewhere with severe winter cold, do not use this as a main heat source. I have gone way past my 36,000 hours that the Edenpure was estimated to last.

Rideshare Boom thanks for sharing your usage of the heater. I do believe the most important thing is how well the insulation is where you are using the heater and how cold it is. I am good on heating my area down to around 10 above zero Fahrenheit and keeping the house around 70 degrees. When down near zero I can still maintain around 68 degrees. I have insulated walls and good attic insulation which does help tremendously.. As you stated I have got many more hours out of the heater than the stated life span of the bulbs.

The reason Edenpure is so much more effective is something you briefly mentioned but didn't expand on. Infrared radiation heating technology is much more effective. If I understand it properly it heats physical objects more so than the air. It's very effective when used outdoors as you'll see overhead on diner patios etc and if I recall those don't even use fans, similar to the parabolic heater you also mentioned which is the oly space heater I've ever seen that tops out at 800 watts. Even the sun is done this way. Rather than heating all the space between the earth it radiates and heates the water, mountains, etc which then slowly realease it all around. When I obtained my first vehicle that had heated seats I could drive with the windows down at sub zero temps and was completely comfortable.

Well now on my 3rd heating season with my same Gen 3 EdenPure heater, still going strong with original bulbs. Runs from October through March each season. Runs majority of the time on low heat which is 880 watts, and keeps 850 foot entire home at 71-72. I really almost can't believe really how well these heaters work. It's really amazing. I tried as some suggested on the oil filled heaters to put a fan behind them to circulate air, running 2 at full blast (3000 watts) couldn't heat my home!

I've used all of these and they don't even compare to a 10,000 BTU radiant kerosene heater. My heat stopped working in the middle of winter last year and I didn't have heat for over a week with temps in the low teens and topping out in the high 20s during the day. I borrowed a friends Edenpure and it got my dining room and kitchen (325 sqft) up to about 63 form 45 degrees inside but that all the higher it got. After about 3 days I went out and got a 10,000 BTU kerosene heater and in about 3 -4 hours the rooms went from the low 40s to 75 at which point I had to shut it off it was just getting too hot. Down side is there is no heat setting on them, they're either on or off but my god the heat the throw is just incredible. Kerosene is about $3-4 a gallon where I live and I get about 14 hours out of a full tank so that's about 21 cents an hour. Thankfully it was air in my system for my main heat so it working again but I now have the 2 Kerosene heaters on the ready in case I have another problem. I'm still going to get my own Edenpure since it did ok in a pinch and as a backup in case I run out of fuel but I'm a kerosene guy now for emergency/supplemental heat. Just have to be smart using them and follow all the directions but that's the same for any heater.

Was blown in from the exterior of the home, they took off sections of the siding cut a hole and blew it in, plugged up the hole and replaced siding back on so you notice nothing at all. It makes a huge difference in walls not being cold in the winter.

I used the radiator last year worked ok, but I wonder, is it more expensive to run the radiator space heater compaered to baseboard. They both are 110 volts. Neither run off a fan. Although baseboard heaters do work, they in my opinion seem quite expensive to run and don't have the ability to circulate the heat as well as other heating methods. Most of the heat they produce goes straight up towards the ceiling. The oil filled heaters also do work however be careful if you run them on high setting as they can easily burn skin. So would not recommend if you have children. I also don't find oil filled heaters near as effective as the infra-style heaters on heating large areas (and yes I've tried them).

Thank you for your comments, you are right a toaster doesn't have a blower, as doesn't the baseboard heater or the oil filled radiator heater shown in my video. And if you have a quartz heater there is no need for any humidifier the air never dries out. That's why quart heaters have the ability to have warmer air at floor level and cooler at the ceiling, laws of physics can't be changed and water (humidity) is heavier than air and that's how quartz heaters heat with water and objects first.
@shofar-man

Relative humidity is proportional to temperature of the room and not the type of heating element. Heating elements don't burn water vapor or oxygen.

Maybe he will learn what relative humidity is, or that a BTU produced by "quartz" is the same as a BTU created by any other source. I've asked him to prove me wrong. I've asked for specific independent testing from a reliable source. He can't supply that, obviously, because it's not possible. Is the Eden Pure a really nice electric resistance heater? I don't know. Maybe. Is it more efficient or produce more heat than ANY other resistance heater with the same wattage input? No. It doesn't.

@MiamiCOIndiana

Yes I would say that. It still is rated at 1500 watts which most space heaters are rated at however the EdenPure can and DOES heat up to 1000 sq feet of well insulated space. (about the size of my house it does great). I figured it cost $60-$80 to run my EdenPure heater per month 24/7. Please note it does NOT run on high or run all the time it will cycle on and off just like a furnace. My gas furnace was costing me around $120-$180 per month to run before getting this heater. I'm on my 7th heating season on the same heater with original bulbs and figured I've saved over $2500 over the past 7 years in heating cost AND Its way warmer in my house. hi I have a question concerning the oil filled radiator, say there are 2 models with the same 2400 wattage but one has 9 fins and the other has 13. Is the heating gonna be the same since they have the same amount of watts, or is the 13 fins better? Also in my opinion (which could be wrong) the one with 13 fins is for me more efficient since it has more oils than the 9 fins which in return would heat the room faster and make thermostat intervals longer which saves money. What do you think?
@MiamiCOIndiana
@MiamiCOIndiana 8 лет назад
+Heanly Hyral 2400 watts is more than rated for the USA where I live, the max of any heater using standard 110 is 1500 watts max. However to answer your question I would agree that the more fins would seem a better option. maybe someone that uses these can give results as I've never seen one with that many fins on it.

@MiamiCOIndiana
@MiamiCOIndiana 10 лет назад
I estimate the cost savings around 40-50%. Note that my central heating system is a natural gas fan forced heater that is outdated. So it is probably in the range of only 70-75% efficient. So if you have a 99% efficient gas furnace the savings won't be as dramatic. However with this being said hands down the infrared heat is the most comfortable heat I have ever used. Constant temperatures in all rooms. My gas furnace would blast heat, then the house would get chilly before the next blast. I don't have this issue with the infrared heater at all.

The Reason the oil filled heaters do not heat as well as your infrared or the other $12.00 electric heaters is because even if you set the thermostat on high the thermostat gets hot and cycles on and off... I have three of them and they do the same thing.. However if you put a box fan aimed at the oil filled heater and put thermostat on high it wont over heat and shut off... BY the way you are not going to get more BTU's out of that Edenpure than any other 120v electric heater that is not faulty. The bad thing about the Edenpure and similar infrared heaters is that those Glass tube heating elements don't last very long. they last about one or two seasons then they go bad... and they are expensive to replace. They don't save any more electricity than any other electric heater. A friend of mine bought one years ago because she bought into the hype that it will save on her heating bill... It did lower her gas bill a little but the Electric bill went WAY up it cost more, way more to heat her house so she got rid of it and went back to relying on her gas furnace. The only advantage they have is the outside of the unit is just warm to the touch (not hot). Most have a remote control but the thermostat is still located on the unit.
@shofar-man
@shofar-man 5 лет назад
Thermostats can be an aggravation for sure. Years ago I had a couple of quartz tower heaters that had infinite control rather than a true thermostat. These days they all seem to have those pesky on/off thermostats. I picked up a quartz tower heater from Walmart online for only $15. I turn the thermostat up to max and control it with a speed control type voltage controller. The result is that I can control the heater for a constant heat output. I guess if I needed max output it might do some switching but I use it to keep room temp lower and me in my easy chair warm with radiant heat. That's true IR heat, if the tubes are hidden in a box it's not IR.

I can feel my walls when its below zero and they are cool but definitely not cold like they use to be. Important also to check around all windows and doors for leaks and seal any you find. 1 Edenpure probably will not heat 1200 sq feet if it’s really cold but 2 should definitely do it just fine.

All the small 1500 Watt heaters only works when you are close to it and you don't feel warm when you have to move around. I think a good heater is not about just wattage. It is about the ability to heat the whole room quickly and evenly so you will feel warm in any part of the room. Efficiency is important but it seems it is not the only factor otherwise everyone will not be still trying to find the best one because they are all 100% efficient in math. To me a good heater is the one that will warm me when I am 10 or 20 feet away and not just in the area close to the heater like 2 feet.
@onexcomputer
@onexcomputer 5 лет назад
The efficiency of all the heaters are roughly the same at the close proximity of the heating elements meaning the heat output are roughly the same at close the heating element. Where this amount of heat is going to move and distribute in the room makes the most effect of your comfort. This effectiveness is hard to quantify. There when the design of a heater is important.

1500W is 1500W. Because the thermostat is incorporated in the heaters, moving the heat away from the unit will avoid it from cycling to a lower power level or even turning off. If the goal is to move hot air to different areas of the house, this could be done with a cheap additional fan.

Edenpure heaters actually do adjust to different power levels and fan speeds depending on heat needed. Appreciate your comment. I have always said if your looking to heat a room up quickly a infrared heater is the WORSE choice and go buy a cheap $20 heater. However if you’re looking to hold a temperature to a certain level in a large area up to 1000 sq ft. Infrared is your absolutely best choice. Since infrared heaters heat objects and water molecules first THEN the air it takes a very long time to bring the area up to desired temperature. However once temperature is achieved it will hold that temperature even in very large areas. I actually use a different brand than when this video was made. It’s not so much about the brand of infrared as they seem to all work very similar. I’m not knocking the consumer report test as I know it was done with good intentions, however for the reasons I just stated seeing how a heater heats up a single room is really not a fair test for infrared heaters. If the test was done with a 1000 sq foot house in the real world the results would have been much different.

@@MiamiCOIndiana we bought a Twin Star infrared heater in 2012. It died a few weeks ago. The best heater we've owned to date. It had 7 tubes to share the load which I believe is the reason it lasted so long . Used a ceramic heater(honeywell) until we bought a new Dr Infrared heater. 2 types of heaters in this one with only one tube and ceramic heater I believe. Smaller but heats the same room as the much larger Twin Star. Seems to be as accurate too. It maintains the set temp well so we're pleased. The room is 12 x 17 ft and insulated. I've used various types of heaters in this room but the infrared seems to keep the temp more consistent. Plus the air is less dry with this type of heater. Had a delonghi convection heater which was decent but ran more often to keep the set temp. I recommend the infrared over all others because it appears to work less to keep the room temp(as you have stated)

These put out 5100 BTU for about 200 dollars, there are space heaters rated at 5000 BTU for 30-50 dollars. Why wouldent getting the cheaper one be better?

Because people will spend hours debating why the same amount of heat for $200 is better than the exact same amount of heat for $15. (it's just really funny to read those that try to defend this magic box of heat!!!)

I copied this from the edenpure website, Combustion heaters create dry, irritating indoor air that can deplete your body’s natural moisture and increase your susceptibility to illness. They also burn a great deal of oxygen - which can actually make you feel tired and fatigued. The EdenPURE heater causes none of this. The part about combustion heaters creating dry air and EdenPure not is just not true. Water happens to be a product of combustion so it's electric heaters that creates dry heat. EdenPure knows so little about physics and engineering it's just plain scary.
