This is one of my ALL TIME favorite Sci-fi moves ever and cannot understand how it could have "flopped" in any way. Its is a must have and if you are a sci-fi lover and have not seen it yet... what rock are you living under? Just buy it!
I'm usually one of the first to decry things like that bass "issue", but the fact of the matter is this was a decision made in the Atmos mixing process, not a mistake that sneaked it's way past QA.
I just rewatched this on PLEX last week. Once again I was blown away by this film. I also thought how great would it be to experience it on 4K, what a pleasant surprise 😮
For those of us that spend 10s of thousands of dollars on our subwoofers we want the subsonic bass. What a disappointment that they remove the bass in the opening scene. I'll stick to my 3d and original blu-ray copy. My lumagen will pump out the hdr and use neural x to upmix to atmos
Wavelength is to big for homes anyway. 20hz is incredibly difficult to playback cleanly. Theres really nothing to gain by going lower. You just get noise. And i dont rlly care what subs you have because you need a 10 foot thicc absorber over the complete back of your room. If you just want noise and not control. Then just generate the Signal yourself. Do you have watched mad max? If yes then what are the most insane bass scenes? There are a few Tricky ones for a subwoofer in there ;)
This movie is an all time favorite. They played the ground hog day effect perfectly where it didn't get old and the story kept pushing forward. I'm nervous about the bass discussion now. Personally, I thought the opening was weird with that signal, and I wasn't sure what the intention was. However, if it has been neutered, has the rest of the bass during the movie also been neutered? I'm on the fence as it is because the 3D bluray of this movie is excellent.
As long as they didn't tone the audio down like war of the world's 4k release I'll be happy. Sounds like they did a good job on this one. Excited to pick it up!
@@jumpmanballerz Yes, Warner removed bass with an aggressive 30Hz filter with only a small amount of usable content left at 26Hz. Down a whopping 15 DB lower (more of less). The bass graphs can be seen at AVSforum. If any content was left after the intro, the graph would clearly illustrate it as it documents all bass throughout the duration of the movie.
Can’t believe they took out the rumble at the beginning. My sub goes down to 15Hz and it would shake the whole house. Now it is GONE. My 4K Vudu stream rumbles the house more at the start then this 4K disc. Looks like I’m keeping the bluray and 3D bluray.
I didn’t think the reviewer said they took out the rumble at the beginning. I understand that they have just tamed the “subwoofer killer” element of the clip. It’s one of my favourite films and the review has really whetted my appetite for the UK release.
The blu ray opening scene, that bass sound you talking bout sounds bad, I've never liked it, so if it's improved in the 4k disc then I would say that alone is worth buying! Mine arrives Tuesday and can't wait! Thanks for the review!
I know you don't call this sort of thing out that often but it's worth calling out how good Tom Cruise's acting was in this movie - a real transformation of character. Great fun and Emily is sensational. Great review Jeff.
I didn’t like the movie.... I LOVED the movie! It’s one of the best sci-fi action films I’ve ever seen. I’ll definitely be ordering this 4K UHD Blu-ray.
It's a missed opportunity in the bass department IMO. I have no data to back up my claim, but I believe a significant portion of 4K disc buyers are highly influenced by sub-20Hz fans (the most vocal TBH).
Awesome to hear they did a great job on the transfer! I love this movie, so I preordered the steelbook version as soon as it became available. Just got shipping notice earlier today, so I'm hoping I get it earlier than the Tuesday ETA (a lot of my orders from Best Buy arrive earlier than expected).
For all those who have the ability to use PEQ filters and are disappointed with the bass; you can add the bass back with BEQ. There’s a whole thread on it on AVS forums. Just need to be careful. It’s great for MAs and anyone with a HoverBoss or EZHover (or whatever it’s being called now). As for EoT. I’m very excited to watch it in 4K. I don’t have my surrounds or Atmos speakers built yet. But, it’s all about the bass for me anyway. One of my favorite sci-fi movies. And, definitely a very underrated movie.
I'm excited for those one. Yeah the bass at the beginning was cool on the blu-ray, but I'd rather have a well balanced mix throughout the movie. WB usually delivers solid tracks.
This is the second or third time I’ve followed your recommendation and ordered a move while watching your video. I want more Atmos movies and trust your opinion, can’t wait for the next movie that will keep my Amazon bill from never ending…
Just picked this up yesterday and watched it last night. Great film. That intro scene with the crazy bass def worked my SVS sub lol I thought it was gonna damage it for sure. Guess I've been spoiled with how newer films look in 4K compared to this. It wasn't as sharp/crisp as I thought it would be, but it was still pretty good in a lot of scenes.
This is an utterly brilliant film. The late Bill Paxton is also great In it. I snapped it up when it came out on Bluray. Will this still be worth upgrading to 4k as I've only got a 5.1 setup, and a Samsung 4k TV at the cheaper end of their range?
I finally played this disk on my legendary Oppo D203 player. This is hands down, my new reference disk for sound. Why can’t all action movies be this good?!
Someone's gonna mux together the original boom and the rest of this track, just watch haha. I'm gonna wait till I see a deal on this, great movie but I can wait for that. Good review as always!
Hey Jeff, I’d love to get clarification in your reviews if the Blu-Ray is a new or old transfer. Most of my friends and family only have a Blu-Ray player and I’d love to know what experience they can expect. Love your content!
@@SilverShine-tr5kr can you apply bt2020 on the bluray and get the same visuals as the 4k since it’s a di 2k upscale to 4k I don’t think it’s worth the upgrade visually unless you want the atmos 7.1
How dare they remove / modify that intro base extension.!!! Not happy. I noticed the base difference right away, didn't need a wave form to notice it. That's what made this movie!! Lol
YES! This is what I was hoping for. Besides getting at least a noticeable (if not substantial) improvement in image quality over the blu-ray, the audio is what I was most concerned with.
That's just stupid. I will not be supporting the practice of altering movies after the fact, especially when the alteration is the removal of a universally-loved sound effect for no reason! WTF were they thinking? It's a hard enough to market a 3D movie as 2D-only, but now the sound has been ruined? No "upgrade" for me. That's a deal breaker.
YES! I’ve been waiting for this one!! LOVE THIS MOVIE. So pumped the sound is great and the picture quality got an upgrade with 4k. Just snagged Mortal Engines, Justice League Snyder Cut, Game of Thrones Collection, and Columbia Classics Vol. 2 with your links. I greatly appreciate your content as a new collector!!
If Joe Sixpack can’t handle an epic bass drop on his flatscreen speakers then tough shit. The end result is we all get screwed. And besides, if it’s too loud, turn the volume down.
Nice review Jeff. For me, this is definitely one I'll stick with the 3D Blu-ray (maybe with an Atmos remux): That's where you'll *really* find the "added depth" you refer to on this one..! Cheers.
Edge of Tomorrow Ultimate Collector's Edition with Steelbook 4K is up for preorder on Amazon UK (Out 1st August) really in 2 minds about buying it through as I've got the blu ray.
Absolutely not hyperbole to call this one of the best action movies ever. Severely under watched and known to the general masses. I’ve been waiting for this Atmos disc ever since Kaleidoscape put it on their machines. Can’t wait!!!
I have dual 18 inch Rythmik subs and that beginning damn near destroyed the foundation of my house. I always felt it was out of place. Glad to hear it's been updated. Picking it up on the 5th. Happy 4th my brother.
Loved this movie as well. I have it on digital UHD on VUDU but haven't watched it yet. I wonder if its much of an upgrade vs digital 4k? I'll still probably buy it on 4K Bluray anyway because it's one of my favorite movies and I want to see it in all its glory.
I bought UHD on Vudu as well about 3 weeks ago. Watched it, looked good but the sound seemed to be a bit off (Atmos sound bar). Not the bass but just didn't sound like I thought it would. I'm thinking disc will be quite a bit better, I didn't realize at the time that Vudu's streaming rate is very slow so not getting highest quality picture. I have bought some 4k on Vudu because it's the only way I can watch with Dolby Vision, my Xbox cannot do Vision. Could watch on Movies Anywhere since their speed is higher but I have constant drops on wifi, no way I can hardwire since TV is in my bedroom. And some digital purchases/copies included with disc for some reason don't have Atmos and/or Vision. Also didn't realize sound is much better off disc. Was only $9 for the digital so I'm tempted to get the disc now.
Is it true the bass is getting rolled off at 30hz on this disc? That would be a real bummer if its true. I think a lot of 4k enthusiasts have sprung for a nice sub that can handle into the teens, so it doesn't make sense to me that the studio would purposfully slap them in the face. Didn't they do the same with War of the Worlds? Good grief!
Sadly it's true. AVSforum and see the chart for yourself. It actually rolls off at 40Hz with a couple lower frequency peaks in the 30 range. . And yes, this is WOTW 4K bad.
Hey Jeff, for those of us that have subs that can handle below 30-17hz Doesn’t the 4K steelbook release come with the original blu-ray? I mean if you still want to have fun and watch the paint fall off your walls and get a back massage on the couch, I think you still can with this release on the blu-ray. Anyway, I think it does. I popped it in for fun on the oppo udp-203 as a 30 second demo, the old Mad Max Fury Road preview started up so I figured it’s probably the same DTS-True Hd mix. Probably the same disc.
Hi Jeff. I bought the Blu ray 3 months ago and am now moving home so everything is packed. Nice review and I will definitely be buying this on 4K. I purchase films for the cinematic experience and find that most of my discs are in mono or stereo so the garbage about wave forms is ridiculous. I know this will infuriate some, but it's all about a cinematic experience versus demo movies. In other words I'll buy a great film in mono versus a piece of garbage in Atmos. BTW I have a 29x29 foot theater with multiple of your chairs and a JVC 4K projector onto a 150" 2.35 screen with an SVS PB4000 in a 7.1.4 setup. Keep up the great work.
Do you know what else is ridiculous? The fact that they set the hard bass filter at 30Hz for the UHD. Just thought someone with a setup like yours would like to know.
Yeah, a good movie in mono vs a bad movie in Atmos is not at all the problem. The problem here is they neutered the bass, for no reason other than to protect those with shitty setups. When I think of “a good movie in mono”, I either think of old movies that never had stereo or higher sound until the home video days, or movies from the 70s and 80s that have awful surround remixes (Kubrick’s movies and The Terminator are great examples. Bad movies with Atmos is up for debate, since the same modern movies with Atmos are equally loved and hated. To compare movie qualities and sound qualities with a disc where the sound was messed with is apples to oranges.
I've had the steelbook pre-ordered since day one. Can't wait to check this out. Jeff, would you consider this a sharp detailed movie or is it soft in some parts?
