Niobium alloyed steel can get weird in high concentrations. To my knowledge 3% Niobium is the limit of particle metallurgy because it clumps during the atomizing process. Niobium is not some super carbide forming alloy, it is comparable to Vanadium and in some areas it is slightly superior to vanadium. I am more interested in steels that have both Niobium and Vanadium. Both are some of the best carbide forming elements that can be used in steel, and together they seem to shine. In Crucible steel (Ingot steel) most alloying elements are often sub 1%, above that and particle metallurgy starts to shine.

Afaik the steel’s name always was Niolox. It’s just that two German knife makers thought it sounded too pharmaceutical and simply renamed it with the initials of their names S and B and added a 1.
