In this model kit review, we're looking at Eduard's 1/48 scale Spitfire Mk.XVI Weekend edition. This kit (No. 84141) is from Eduard's series of Spitfires and gives the modeler two marking options.
Eduard has a reputation of making over-engineered model kits that are very difficult during construction. Is this kit par for the course or an improvement over Eduards early Bf 109E and Fw 190 A kits? Are the Eduard Spitfires the best Spitfires currently available in 1/48? Let's find out!

Awesome looking build, interesting idea on building a personalized officer's plane. When that landed you knew you better have base in shape. The reference to Decal Dungeon was very helpful as I'm looking for some special decals. I'm attempting to learn to finish out a model to this kind of quality finish and took some notes on colors. Thanks for sharing .

Thank you! I was referring to my collection of unused decals from previous kits when I referenced the "decal dungeon". Sorry for any confusion.

@@jonsmodelkitreview4624 No problem, just getting back in game after retirement - and have been like Rip Van Winkle hearing all these new names of kits and materials. I did keep my stash and had forgotten how long I have been out, most kits go back to 80 and 90's, a few from 60's companies are long gone by now. So I bet I have also got a Decal Dungeon - just didn't know it. 🤓🛩✈

Truly an outstanding build, and a very interesting and striking scheme... Eduard's 1:48 Spitfires are in fact the best in any scale, and among the best kits ever. The 1:32 Tamiyas have severe shape issues in the transition from cowling to spinner, looking down or up at about 40-55 degrees from level. The new 1:24 Airfix is probably equivalent, but does not depict the armour glass thickness, which at twice the scale is half as acceptable.

Thank you! I agree, the Eduard Spitfires are world-class. They're probably the best kits I have built to date.

Sweet!... I've always viewed the 'Weekender' kits as more 'I'll finish it by the weeks end... probably😏

A beautiful looking result Jon. My only small niggle with the kit is the Zeus fasteners on the engine cowlings - they are a bit donut like! An interesting philosophical difference between Eduard and Kotare - the new Kotare Spitfire has fantastic detail but it has a really low parts count. They've chosen to mould on a lot of the cockpit detail and things like wheel well walls which come in three or four parts in most 1/32 scale kits are just one piece.

Thanks Phil! It's interesting to note that the early Eduard kits were very simple (most were ones they produced for Gavia) Yak-3, I-16, Lagg-7. Then they went super parts heavy with the 109E and Fw190 kits. The Spitfires are still parts heavy but much nicer to build. I've seen the Kotare kit in other reviews but not in person yet. It certainly sounds like a good one! Cheers!

Eduard kits might be delicate but the engineering is exceptionally smart. Compare that to MiniArt who don't give a single thought to the engineering of their kits.

@czerskip Neither manufacturer is perfect. I've built some poorly engineered Eduard kits (Fw190D-9) and some brilliant ones (Spitfires). The MiniArt P-47D is in between those two from a construction standpoint. It's still a very nice kit. Cheers!

Hi Jon, any chance you remember what your mix is for your custom blue on this one? Robb’s plane is on my bucket list and your color really captures what my mind’s eye perceives as a good color. Thanks!

@Lee-g4e Sure thing, Lee. I used Folk Art acrylic color 713 Costal Blue. This is a craft paint. I don't know if it's currently in production. It's very close to a Russian Underside Blue. I hope that helps.

Thank you! I watched some of the Kotare review. I got the initial impression that it looked very much like the Eduard kit. However, I have not seen it in person, so I can't speak from experience here.

Is that PRU blue scheme coming in the kit? I'm surprised to se a recon Spit with cannons, as the removed all weapons to make space for more fuel. This ships in rcon configuration flew al the way from UK to Berlin to do photo reconnaissance. Even the windshield was a single plexi glass without bullet proof wind screen. Because they figured in a german interceptor was that close the pilot was already dead.
@jonsmodelkitreview4624
@jonsmodelkitreview4624 Год назад
Hi Mauricio, it is not a PRU blue aircraft nor a PR Spitfire. It was painted a custom light blue (similar to PRU blue) for Air Chief Marshall Sir James Milne Robb. SL721 was built in August 1945 and delivered to the RAF, where it became the personal aircraft of Air Chief Marshall Sir James Milne Robb, a WW1 pilot who served as Commander-In-Chief - Air Forces Europe following WW2.

Point of interest about the Mk XVI Spitfire- It is actually the same plane as the Mk IX, except for the fact that the XVI has a Packard-Built Merlin engine while the IX had a Rolls-Royce powerplant. Why the British would assign a whole different Mark number based only on the production source of the engine, I can't guess...
@jonsmodelkitreview4624
@jonsmodelkitreview4624 Год назад
You are correct! The Packard Merlin had been adapted to American production methods and standards. Parts weren't interchangeable between the Packard and Rolls-Royce powerplants. Thus, the two marks required different lines of supply. I think that's why the Mk.XVI got the new mark number.

I was very fortunate to spend the better part of an hour in the cockpit of this very Spitfire (SL721) when she was based at Ottawa and in the care of Mike Potter. She was in absolutely pristine shape and wearing the colours of 421 Squadron, RCAF, with the codes "AU-J".
