Ryan, consider writing a book about Stoicism for children and for teenagers. I wish I had learned to use Stoicism as a child, and I know a teenager that could use it now.

One of the best books I have ever read, I recognised some of my own failings in my career - but also the failings of those around me. I love how Ego is the enemy is a book that you can come back to every single time. There are so many moments in the book that are not replicable in a youtube video. I congratulate you for being as humble as trying to state in this video that the lessons that you go through by reading it can be big pictured in this 5 mins. They can't, Ego is the enemy is an experience that hits you differently depending on where you are. The same applies for the whole trilogy. What a blast.

Very ambitious trying to summarize this book in 4 1/2 minutes. Ryan just barely scratches the surface here. If you haven't read it yet, I strongly recommend it. It will give you a lot to think about. No hacks, system or 'ten tips' lists here but very powerful thoughts and compelling stories to illustrate the ideas. If you put in some brain work and reflect while reading, it could change your life.

Ego is not the enemy. It has a purpose but the problem is we aren’t taught that WE are to regulate it and let it know it’s purpose. It’s unhealthy to think, believe and behave as if a vital part of us, whose job is to protect us, is evil. It simply needs to be understood and then it’s our job to tell it to have a seat and stay silent when it tries to do more than it’s job.

Fair point, yet nobody says you need to go all-in into one narration. And a vast majority of people would greatly benefit from absorbing that mental model. There are always some edge cases, and I bet they are somehow covered in the book or in Ryan's other lectures. Unfortunately, there is a limit to the amount of information you can include in a 4-minute video :D

The more I read about stoicism, the more I see ego in so many people in my life. Its like a blindfold and stops so many people from recognising their potential. One of the most common phenomenon I encounter is an inability to take criticism. In turn, this creates an environment in which people are afraid to criticise because of the reaction it will receive. Its a real skill to avoid taking negative feedback personally. Too often people seem to hear that they are being criticised, before they hear what the criticism actually is.

Ego is a terrified child, crying out for help / attention / love. Yes it is vying for control of your attention, behavior, time, energy, and for most of us ruins or limits our experience of life. That said it’s not our enemy. Resisting and fighting it only strengthens it’s psychological grip on our spirits / higher selves. It must be healed with loving awareness, compassion, and light heartedness. Trust me, I know what I’m talking about. I’m the greatest living philosopher and the most humble teacher ever :)

Stoicism ties in so nicely with so many other philosophies and ideas. This reminds me of the psychology surrounding the idea of self-actualisation (was it Maslow?) - one of the important pre-requisites to realising the most perfect and accomplished versions of yourself is to constantly try and view life through a ‘child’s eyes’. Be open minded and continually ready to learn new things. Great video!

Id also argue that there is a regressive form of ego, where you are too certain in your doubt, in your lack of confidence, where you insist you dictate or know reality better than trying. All due respect to Ryan, I think the notion of ego as the enemy leads to all kinds of danger as well as performative contradictions. If you look into any cult, the most common mechanism by which the cult leader secures loyalty of his/her followers is to break down their ego by shaming people for having it. Like the shadow, the ego is not to be denied, shamed, or slain, but rather to be integrated. I’d go as far as saying- and this is probably the Christian in me- that the ego is to be loved as an enemy is to be loved. Ego is the self, it’s the boundary between you as a dynamic entity and the world as a dynamic entity. We may implicate the ego in the fall of civilizations, and the demise of relationships, but it is also the catalyst for everything good we pursue. The problem is not ego, it’s a lack of dynamism, and I think Ryan is just conflating the two concepts.

I would argue ego is a necessary evil to tame with. You can't be good at something without self love (or self esteem) first. As you get better, that slowly rewards your little self-esteem subconsciously in terms of money, success, fame, win over arguments, power, confidence etc. As this feedback loop grows bigger, the "illusion of knowledge" eventually become second nature. Learning is not the obstacles, anyone can do it but the ability to "un-learn" is the biggest obstacle. However, the reward is extremely humbling. In a nutshell, you can't be good without growing your tiny ego and you can't become excellent without completely destroying your egos.

I love Ryan's videos and got Meditations for the be first time over 30 years ago. That copy was literally held together with duct tape. With that said... There is no "ego".... Or "id" or "spirit" or "soul". Those are merely words that have been made up to almost absolve us of responsibility when we mess up. There is only "you" and there are traits we have, that if not checked can prevent us from growing in a positive way. The person who thinks they know it all is a person who thinks they know it all and that trait will prevent them from growing. It is not their ego.... IT IS THEM
