Thank you sir! You and Tony Samperi are the only ones who has done this pedal justice on RU-vid, everyone else just tweak it into some really unusable sounds. Which is why I believe a lot of people dont really seem to like it very much.
Thank you! I think there’s a lot of people *really* into the vintage stuff always making sure to shout the loudest whenever there’s a newer version available. Understanding the capabilities and the parameters is key to bringing out the best, I think.
Ok, just went back and checked out the other deluxe electric mistress xo reviews, also to see if I missed any. Yours is far and away the best one that actually puts its through its paces as a flanger. So many people crank chorus and flanger up to Leslie levels of speed that aren’t my bag, and that tells you nothing about the character of the flange (or a chorus). Your videos are super useful and valuable, thank you!!! P.S., you explained what flangers do way better than Josh Scott. I love the Josh, but he kinda stinks at explaining what pedals do and what they do with wave forms. Please keep sharing pedal wave forms and the diagrams, they’re super helpful, the drawings especially. This was the first time i saw anyone explain a comb filter in a way that makes sense.
Thank you so much, that means a lot. I always try to think about how it will sit in a band mix, and a lot of things that sound neat when they're sitting on a desk sound like garbage in the mix. Just trying to help people make more informed purchases!
The last chapter where you use the pedal in a creative chain and show it / play something unique and cool sounding is a step up on most pedal reviews and got u an instant sub bc it shows us ideas of what we could do with the pedal other than just using it solo. Ill be checking ur page now for reviews hoping to see that last chapter for inspiration. Well done bro i hope ur page catches fire. I think it deserves to
Excellent playing examples and clear explanations! I feel like a lot of vintage purists trash this pedal online because it sounds different from the originals, but I found many wonderful and usable settings on mine! A hint for others wanting to get even more out of their EM would be to open up the back and play with the trimpots. The XO model is calibrated quite wide in Color and Range compared with older units, so it doesn't have the trademark nasal flanging tone that defines the EM. I backed the Color pot ("Feedback") down just below the point where the pedal would self-oscillate, turned the Range pot ("Clock") fully counterclockwise, and set the Mix pot ("Null") to fully clockwise. This makes the pedal much more usable across all extremes and a lot more lush.
Thank you for the video. I used to have an original vintage Electric Mistress pedal but sold it a few years back when financial times were hard. I have been using a myriad of various flangers but am unable to find one that sounds like the Mistress. I saw that EH had a Deluxe Electric Mistress pedal and your video, and it clearly showed me that this is the pedal for me. I was able to get a deal on a new one for under $100 bucks, so thanks again. Rob
Thanks for sharing that, I’m glad it sounded at least similar to your old one, and I hope when the Deluxe shows up, it gives you that sound you’re after.
Andy Summers of the Police was known to use an old-school Electric Mistress back in the day. You hear it on songs like "Message in a Bottle." I like the E-Lady by Mooer, it has a lot of that vintage sound.
i love a nice slow flange but so many people put it way too fast, thank you for playing slowly, thank you so much, you have no idea how long i have searched for a good demo of this pedal, every few months i check and i am disappointed, but i finally i have found your video and now my life is complete, i can sleep well now, knowing there is a good demo of this awsome pedal
Dude! Where have you been? I have just discovered your channel. It was a perfect video. The pedal stack part at the end of the video is marvelous, the tones are very good. I will dive your other videos today. Thanks!
Hey, thank you so much Serdar! I’ll try to keep making the stuff you like. That pedal specifically was a lot of fun to do, its not what most people expect.
I never knew the difference between all of these. I had a Neo Mistress at one time. It wasn't bad! I have Boss Flangers now (BF-3, BF-2, and HF-2). I like those. I don't always know the best application for flanger, but it definitely reminds me of The Cure.
Hello mate. Just discovered your channel. Really enjoying your angle and content. Any chance you could deep dive the BD2? I’m looking for a new overdrive and the BD2 is near the top of the list. By the way, I’m using the Mooer e-Lady for my flanger and I’m pretty happy with it Keep the vids coming 👍🎸
I bought one spontaneously on reverb. Instantly had buyers remorse but watched this video and was glad to be experiencing something new. I had it on my board for about less than 24 hours when I started getting ground loop hum lol Took me a couple days to fix the hum but I’m never putting that pedal on my board again.
I wonder if it was a faulty pedal or power setup. I’ve known EHX pedals to be picky before, but with a ground hum, that might be worth getting to the bottom of.
Excellent video, concise and informative! I would love to see that Stereo Electric Mistress video, especially with a comparison made to the Deluxe Electric Mistress when it comes to algorithms behind the sounds and how they conmpare/contrast. Just subscribed with all notifications on.
I just learned about this pedal, and I'm a flanger kinda guy. I love the MXR Flanger, and just got my hands on an Earthquaker Pyramids Stereo Flanger that is just out of this world. I highly recommend it. But now, I think I'm getting one of these too.
Thank you! Those MXR flangers are great, when space/power is no issue, I really like the EVH one with the "unchained" switch, it's like having a second mode. Those S1 switching Strats are great, I always wondered why they didn't seem to catch on. Mine's got the Samarium Cobalt pickups and I love the range on 'em, nice and mellow, hits the sweet spot that I like.
How the fruit did I not notice this had a reticon RD5106?? No wonder my pastfx pedal sounds just like this. I wonder if the new Andy Summers pedal will be using that reticon or if they've moved on by now to cool audios. I used to have an mxr micro chorus with that 5106 and it sounded fantastic, one knob was enough. Simper times.
Oh yeah, it's a good one. From what I saw in Reddit, the new Andy Summers pedal is exactly the same as this, just a different look. www.guitarpedalx.com/news/electro-harmonix-discontinues-the-deluxe-electric-mistress-and-immediately-brings-it-back-as-the-andy-summers-signature-walking-on-the-moon-flanger
I just got the Andy Summers ehx flanger and it has a xvive3009 inside. Interesting difference from the reticon 5106a In you're XO deluxe! Curiosity piqued
I think I heard you say that chorus is your favourite effect. AM I right? And that you are somewhat a collector of chorus pedals? .... Well - without wanting to sound like a commercial - have you checked out the Analogue Chorus / Flanger "Komorebi" from Dreadbox? To tell you the truth I am not that much of a fan of Chorus or Flanger, BUT the Komorebi is very versatile and in a certain setting it forms the basis of my tone at the moment. It's always on. You might want to check it out -if you haven't already. p.s Dreadbox has a fazor aswell but I haven't got it yet.
Kick ass I just got a boss hi band flanger from a buy a bunch of junk equipment to get one cool thing deal it's a bit subtle compared to the car normal bf 2 but definitely unique and pretty rare
Haha, I know exactly what you mean. I think the only difference is the range of the delay, but it does seem to be getting more and more rare each year. Thanks for watching!
Nice flanger explanation. 👍🏻 I prefer chorus .. I have a Small Clone, but use a Super Chorus that I’ve had forever. I should dust-off the Small Clone and goof around for a while. I wish I would have watched this *before* I watched the news. It cheered me up anyway. ☮️
Glad you got some cheer out of the video, at least. EHX doesn't get enough credit for their modulation effects. They have some sort of secret herbs and spices in there that immediately jump out and make them work in places most others aren't. Agree on flanger/chorus, though I feel like the Electric Mistress really pushes the envelope between them.
Just saw this video, and it's the best I have seen on this pedal. Very simple yet comprehensive. I could actually hear the pedal and make a proper assessment. I have been interested in this one for a while. One question, does it have a significant volume drop? I didn't really hear anything in your video. Thanks and great job!
Eh, people say things. I used it for a year before realizing it was digital, and I still like it. It’s not like digital means what it did in the mid 90’s anymore.
I don't think it's garbage - it's great for a really watery sound - but it definitely is not doing the same thing as the other Mistress pedals and could so easily have been a lot better. My main criticism is it doesn't give you enough control over the parameters. The controls are labeled "depth" but they're really blends and the only part of the effects' sounds you can control is the rate. The chorus sounds good but the flanger has a fixed amount of feedback and I usually use flangers with the feedback low or off. I think blended chorus and flanger is a good idea for a pedal, but those limitations mean a better method would be using separate chorus and flanger pedals with a parallel blender so you can really fine tune each one. Also, the chorus is not stereo at all and you get a completely mono signal if you turn the flanger all the way down. Guess they should do a Deluxe Stereo Electric Mistress.
Absolutely. And just when I think I have it figured out, I’ll try it with another guitar and it’s like… completely different response. Wonderful pedals.
This was a great video! There are disappointingly few quality demos of this pedal on RU-vid. I’ve had mine for about a year and definitely feel it’s a bit underrated. It has its limitations, but as you’ve shown, you can get some great tones with it! Have you explored its trim pots at all? I’ve heard these can help tweak the sound a bit further, but I haven’t come across much information on how exactly they change the sound of the pedal. I'll definitely be checking out more of your videos!
Thanks Anthony! I really like it as an in-between pedal. It’s not scrapey like some of my others, but it’d not as deep as a chorus. It’s just a fun amount of modulation. I didn’t mess with the trimpots, but I know that’s another dimension to get into. Maybe an advanced video at some point :)
apparently there is a trim pot that controls mix that isn't screwed all the way up in the new one, which is why a lot of people claim the new one is "less lush" screw the trim pot inside all the way up and it sounds just like the original also i think there may be a trim pot for feedback thats too high causing it to self oscillate at certain levels which is something the original didn't do, but thats not to bad
@@KYCDK There's a great Reddit post comparing a bunch of Electric Mistresses (both EHX and clones) and the post includes a pretty thorough explanation of adjusting the trim pots in the XO. I adjusted mine a little bit following the post and am very happy with the pedal! I didn't change it dramatically, but enough to suit my tastes even more. Sounds like you might've read the same thing!
Cool video, You really nailed the V8 analogy lol. I have the same one and use it as a chorus. Anybody looking into picking up one of these, do it. ITS GREAT!!
Honestly to me it seems closer to a chorus than a flanger. I find it has very little of an electric mistress, there are better pedals for that kind of sound, like Mooer's elec lady. It's btw a nice sound, but you don't have to look at it from a mistress's point of view. I think it's very different.
I had it for a year on my pedalboard, but nope, this thing sounds bad, like I'm constipated! So I went back to my 98 Deluxe Electric Mistress and of course, a Mooer Eleclady. The bypass of the new ehx is lousy, and the sound too. good review
@@StompboxBreakdown would you say that the flange effect just sounds "better" on the stereo version, then? I am more interested in getting a good flanger than a chorus (I already have the chorus pedals that I need. 😁). Also, what are your thoughts on the TC Electronic Vortex flanger effect pedal? Have you tried that and how does that compare to the EHX Electric Mistress to your ears?
The EHX Flanger/Chorus Pedal with Matrix can modulares Keyboard String Sound Like a Sound From Hohner String or Streichfett From a normal Keyboard in this good old Sound to simulate Sound From old.Z.B. Arp Synthorchestra String with a formed Sawewave. Ca.135,00€.best Regard Matthias
I bought the black (Stereo one) about ten years ago and still use it. With both Flange and Chorus knobs at 9:00 and Rate at noon, its strangely wild yet still stable. Completely unique among my pedals.
