I think what people fail to understand when making anti Zionism arguments that don’t have hateful connotations is that the entire spiritual aspect of Judaism revolves around Israel, which does not excuse the fucked up things that go on there or in any theocratic culture, but it is a land based folk ethnoreligion that revolves around that lands history, so I think the mistake people make is not understanding that it wasn’t just ploppped in some random place and that an observing Jew is going to still have specific sentiments on it the same as a Native American tribe might on a certain region

Israel is a very diverse county. There are people from all walks of life who live there. A visitor recently stated that it is one of the brownest countries he has ever visited. The original meaning was simply that the Jews have their own homeland. The definition has expanded over the years by anti-Semites who rationalize that they do not dislike Jews. They only dislike Zionists. However, as a people, we never intended the definition to extend beyond its original meaning. It would be absurd if the definition encompassed not being able to criticize Israel. Israel has its own newspapers that criticize the country on a regular basis. I live in the US. People who live here criticize the US all of the time. But that does not mean we do not respect our country. However, if someone states that they are criticizing Israel, but their comments are really directed at Jews, then IMO, that would be anti-Semitic. I have heard people repeat that phrase over and over again in a knee jerk manner. Yet, they often the people who regularly and comfortable repeat that phrase, either do not voice or do not have legitimate criticisms of Israel.
