An interesting note about Blaidd and Fort Laiedd is their connections to Welsh (a lot of the names in English are welsh or Irish names actually). Blaidd means “wolf” in welsh I think and it’s where the ending ‘dd’ gets its pronunciation as a soft ‘th’ like in “the”. It’s not confirmed, but seeing the same ‘dd’ ending at fort laiedd makes me think it’s also welsh and follows a similar pronunciation. Laiedd also means “less” in welsh. So, it’s like the name is “small fort”.
I saw an interview with the voice actor of Blaidd and he explained the Welsh connection and the pronunciation. According to the katakana, however, Laiedd is like “lide”

This kind of makes me wonder how many of the names and place names were originally English/welsh/etc. and then translated to Japanese because part of the world was created by George R. R. Martin or if the localization team translated them to look welsh/Irish in the English version to fit the feel of the world.
I never realized how helpful katakana could be for translating into English. That phonetic spelling is almost like when a dictionary breaks down a pronunciation for you. I’ve always been curious, though, if these names had come from George RR Martin and then translated phonetically into the Japanese. A lot of the dev of this game and the connection to his lore is fascinating. I need an official making-of book!
Exactly! If I ever bothered to learn how to read those dictionary pronunciations that would help, but katakana works. I’m also dying to know what exactly Martin wrote!
