In the Northeast of Hamburg, in the quarter of Alsterdorf, a new bus depot has been built in the years 2018/19. It belongs to Hochbahn, the main public transport company of Hamburg. The depot is located inside a triangle of railway lines - underground, suburban rail, and freight bypass line. In the 2000s, Hamburg had planned to build a tram depot here. Due to a change in government of Hamburg the tram project was put aside. A new bridge has been built to grant access from the street Tessenowweg.
At present, mainly Diesel buses are maintained at the new depot, but also the first electric buses that are delivered one by one. For 2019, Hochbahn has ordered 20 electric buses from Mercedes and 10 from Solaris. They are used frequently on lines in northeastern Hamburg.
In the Netherlands, in South Holland, there is the city of Leiden. Here Arriva is operating the municipal bus lines using Volvo 7900 electric buses. They also have got their electric equipment mounted in compartments on the roof which makes them look very much like the Mercedes E-Citaro buses. Two bus lines lead through the western and two lines through the eastern quarters of Leiden, towards the railway station De Vink, an important hub for connection between railway and city bus. There is a charging station supplied by ABB. Buses can charge during waiting time before going onto the next run.
The buses at Hamburg have got battery capacities of 243 kWh (Mercedes E-Citaro) and 240 kWh (Solaris urbino electric). That is enough for at least 150 km of operation, a shift of 8 hours. Then the bus returns to the depot and is charged there.
The Leiden buses, Volvo 7900 electric, have got almost the same capacity of batteries - 200 kWh. Nevertheless Arriva in Leiden prefers interval charging at the columns of the charging station. This enables the buses to run for almost any time without the need to return to the depot after 150 km. The buses in Leiden came into use in 2019 as well. Time will show whether battery life is shortened by frequent charging at the charging station.
