Thanks for your wonderful and informative videos.. Wall boxes are so expensive. I've gone another route and bought a 32amp socket for £35, and a 7kw portable charger with a lovely big blue plug top, for £170.. Both from Amazon.. Now I can charge at 3 x the old rate, all for £205, (not a grand)..All with OVO for 7p/unit.. And I can charge for 7p during the day.. Hopefully this will be of interest to your viewers.. Thanks again for all your work... Best wishes David..

You don't necessarily need to get GivEnergy batteries and solar PV, I have different systems installed separately that integrate fine but if you are doing a fresh install it may be more cost effective to buy it as a package.

I can see where you're coming from, much better to have 1 app for control. I have just had a Givenergy battery installed, in addition to my existing powervault battery which has been good but is now too small for my needs. So that's 2 apps plus a myenergi app for the charger, plus a mixergy app for the hot water.. doh!! And yet another app for my MG4, good job I'm retired because it takes me most of the day to get them all in sync!

Thanks, yes indeed this is the way forward. I am very often at home most days, so in Summer I just plug the granny in and select 6,8,10 amps according to the sunshine and my battery level and hope to export nothing and end the day with a full house battery. Automating my manual efforts is ideal.

I fully appreciate that some people want a single provider eco-system and that the GivEnergy EV charge unit has integrated features that link to other GE equipment. In reality very few people will use them, you included because as you said it makes more financial sense only to charge during the off peak/cheap rate hours of your tariff and also not use solar divert with it being more beneficial selling excess solar gain to the grid and buying back at the off peak/cheaper rate. BTW - I thought that you were using Home Assistant which can unify everything into one view anyway. Also what happens if you lose internet connectivty, is there any impact to the operation, control or the status of any of the GivEnergy system? However the most important question is; is it just the camera angle or is it mounted out of square? 😮

Integration is key. The next step needs to be two way charging. V2G. The case for Solar divert is reduced. Why not Fill your home battery and EV overnight, AND Divert all Solar to the grid and receive 15p / kWh.

Before the grant was ended for homeowners to fit chargers I bought a second Zappi tethered. We have two EVs and on Inteligent 🐙Go and works great as well as the obvious solar divert as well as charging out GE9.5 battery easily during the 6+ hrs per night. We then export as much as possible from solar at twice the cost of use from charging up the battery after the house uses what it needs.

Hello there, I'm with OVO and they don't have an off-peak tariff but they have an EV tariff, at 7p per KW, that's available 24hrs a day. I've also had 16 solar panels and a 9.5kw GivEnergy battery installed by them last month and they're going to be paying me 20p per KW for exporting to the grid, so those maths work for me. It'll take 12 months to get a better picture but so far so good. Cheers

Not having an integrated system is my biggest regret, the car will always deplete the home battery before taking energy from the grid because it doesn't talk to the inverter. The only workaround this I've found to take take advantage of the cheap hours to get from the grid is to manually limit the battery that day. it's either that or charge only when the sun is up. At the end of the day having a homecharger for free from the dealership when i got the car wasn't that great.

You can sometimes move the CT clamp so that the battery doesn't see the EV and it's usually possible to wire the charger, again, so that it's not seen by the batteries. Most people use Home Automation as it's cheaper (if you're using it for other things).

Excellent stuff. Like many I have some of the equipment EV, Solar panels, Batteries, domestic charge point, WiFi etc and some of it is now a bit stupid, outdated, or low on capacity. The problem with being an early adopter I guess. I may have to replace several incompatible components but what I'd really like is advice from a business who could look at my system and can say which bits should be replaced, which bits are working and which software pulls it together best. Is there such an advisory service outside the home counties? (I'm in Scotland).

I’ve got a GivEnergy inverter and battery system and charge the battery overnight during the Octopus Flux cheap charge period. I’m looking to add their EV charger and moving to Octopus Go with the longer cheap rate period. What settings do you use to prevent battery drainage - or is it not a problem if BOTH home and car batteries are set to charge for the same period? I am presuming that is the case as running my dishwasher during the Flux cheap period does not seem to affect battery charging.

My question is what settings you use on the EV charger for it to sink with charging the Mii on Octopus intelligent? I recently switch from Go to Intelligent and therefore removed the schedule from the charger as instructed by Octopus but the Mii doesn't start charging in the schedule set by Octopus for some reason? Is your EV charger connected directly to the grid or are you able to to send power from battery to car? Does the Modbus option need to be on? I'm puzzled as to what's causing the issue but think it may be because my battery inverter is controlling the charger rather than Octopus controlling the car? The RFID thing could be useful for landlords too that have "bills inclusive" rooms. Normally bills inclusive doesn't include EV charging so it would allow someone to pass on any charges. It'd be cheaper than the tenant / lodger charging elsewhere. Equally might be good for things like zapmap, but then you would "bill" per the hour

It's also good if you were to rent out your drive to those who can't charge at home or just want to share it with friends/family if they haven't got a charger. I'd still like to see a system where you have an RFID card issued by your energy provider and then you can be billed at your home rates. That would solve a lot of the issues around public charging cost (just pay a connection fee) and those who can't charge at home.

You might not want to exactly quote the price you paid. But how did you find the cost to change your charger, with I’m guessing most of the work already been done when your Ohme was installed. I currently have a 5 year old chargemaster charger that I expect will need to be replaced at some point (I’m using a type 2 Ohme cable to get intelligent at the moment)

Since getting my solar and home battery installed in autumn 2022, I used the solar diversion feature of my Zappi extensively last summer (the part of the summer that didn't suck, obviously) and had a very complicated prediction script that ran every night to minimise my total grid usage by ensuring my home battery could get the most power from the sun, followed by my car, then the grid. But since Octopus effectively quadrupled my export tariff, that's all gone out the window. Come the spring/summertime, the home battery and car will charge overnight and every joule of energy generated by the sun will go out to the grid. Shame really, as I spent ages tweaking those scripts and automations in Home Assistant. Oh well....

The only problem with the Giv Energy charger is that it’s not currently supported for Intelligent Octopus Go tariff - 7.5p kWh. You need to buy one of the £1000 (installed price) chargers to benefit from this - or have a compatible EV.

Solar diverting doesn’t make any sense financially. If you’re struggling to pull energy overnight then set your load balancing to maximise your draw. Apart from that I agree with trying to purchase matching equipment, makes life easier.
@Umski
@Umski 8 месяцев назад
I disagree - locally generated electricity for free is cheaper than paying for it - in the summer it will essentially keep the cars charged up for free - if it’s a feature of the charger then it’s a no brainier unless your export price is orders of magnitude greater than the cheap rate import rate 🤷‍♂️
@bradleyarcher9840
@bradleyarcher9840 8 месяцев назад
I’m on octopus intelligent go, I charge everything for 7.5p kWh and export everything back during the day for 15p kWh. Double bubble, to use it would be daft.
@Umski
@Umski 8 месяцев назад
@@bradleyarcher9840 indeed then with a tariff that pays more for export than import it makes sense unlike on the old Feed in Tariff which pays a measly 5p if that for export!

@@ElectricVehicleMan Sure - nothing outside the ordinary white goods really. Just not heard of anyone having 2 EV chargers and my electrician and another shaking their heads - but this might just be that they haven't come across it and haven't applied their brains? 7kW is only c30A so there ought to be plenty of spare in an ordinary home set-up? Just wondered if there is something I'm missing.

It surprised me to learn that you are not in the pocket of GivEnergy. Why not? You are probably responsible for many of their recent sales. The least they could do is sponsor you.

I wouldn't worry about using the excess solar power yourself. If it's financially better to put the excess solar power into the grid do that. You make money and the electricity you have generated gets used somewhere else so offsetting what you have put in the car? Make money and offset your carbon footprint. Win/win.
@nealm1814
@nealm1814 8 месяцев назад
You said it. "It makes financially more sense to export excess solar than to use it yourself". In other words don't install a solar array because you have an EV. You will only get a meaningful EV charge in summer and even then you will make more money charging the EV at night and exporting the excesss solar during the day.

I charge as slow as possible as I can get, like tonight cheep electric from 4pm to 5:30 am for my whole house, once I have a plan. I charge my Tesla on a three pin plug at 5A and can get 50 miles a night. If the plan starts early. 4 or 5pm. If I need more I can bump it up to 10 amp, but electric for heating the house doing the wahing, tumble dryer, dishwasher, at 7.5 pence is a no brainer. The longer it takes the better.

We are now a 2 EV household and am wondering what to do about charging both simultaneously, when needed. We currently have one dumb Rolec charger and the original Ohme Smart cable, which plugs into it. Since we already have a GivEnergy battery, I suppose what I'd really like is one of those GivEnergy chargers which can charge 2 cars at once, ideally with Intelligent Octopus Go support.

Thanks for sharing the info. Great ideas for people looking into a integrated system. Agree on the convenience of having all in the same integrated system, provided you are comfortable with being 'locked in' so to speak. I'm in the Fronius environment with smart meter, solar/inverter and solar aware Wattpilot EV charger...just don't have the integrated battery as don't need it. Keep the videos coming :)
