Yammie Noob I just got an Sur Ron X for hitting the trails and utilizing the bike lanes in Seattle. Fantastic urban fun and can throw it in the truck and take it to the ORV park or just some fire roads out of town. Not giving up my 2018 Street Triple R by a long shot but electric is the future and I think we are going to see them get better and better! Great vid. Cheers.

How would you think they would have the racing separated when the electric bikes over take the Gas bikes? By battery size, output wattage, or would you think like fighting and wrestling, with weight classes?

Tommy Boy My guess would be by kilowatt hour and electric motor size at this point. Maybe more specific metrics will be employed once the obstacles that papa Yam (funny saying that as I’m 52, ha) pointed out (price, range and feel) will all improve over the next few years and I’m sure more eBike classes will emerge. My Sur Ron is more bicycle than motorcycle but it’s quick and even a bit useful, but just like my Triumph , its really just for fun and enjoyment

Electric bikes need a removable battery of industry std design that can be swapped out in seconds. Imagine having a bank of batteries on charge & charged at the local servo like swap n go gas bottles You pay a set fee just like the gas bottle system & now its just as fast as fueling up. You pull up remove your battery & put in the bank on charge then grab another fully charged & install then ride away.

I've got a Zero SR/F. The range is sufficient for what I do, charging is pretty quick (6kW), and the thing pulls like a liter bike. Best part is going 0-80mph-0 from one stoplight to the next, silently!

I might be confused but you said silently as if it was a good thing. I'm sure it's just me mis-understanding you, going 0-80mph making zero noise fills my heart with sadness. (Also it's incredibly dangerous as noise keeps us safe as bikers)

You point out a lot of good facts but electrics have their place... I have a Zero SR 2015. In the 4 years riding, the ONLY expense I've had is tires. This bike has paid for itself in repairs, gas, oil, etc. I hardly ever use the brakes cause regen does most of the slowing down. Yes, they cost more initially but are really cheap to keep. I've never had to stop for a recharge as I plug it in when I go to bed and I have all the juice I need to ride the 100 miles a day I do. I use the bike for commute and weekend jaunts so it's perfect for that. I'm not into cruising anyway. ...and the torque, WOW! I'll never go back to gas.

That's great to hear! I've been holding out on account of, even though the "official" range is enough to do the "Alice's loop" as I refer to it (folks from the SF Bay Area might know what I'm referring to), when I asked the guy at the shop that sells 'em, he said real-world he wouldn't count on it. If you're getting an actual 100 miles per charge (is that right?) then that's encouraging. How much of that is at freeway speed, vs around town? Now that they're *starting* to get the idea that a fairing might help with the freeway range (halfway there, anyway), I'm hoping sometime within the next 5 years they'll have something that meets my greater Bay Area needs, if not my long-range tourcycle needs.

dwc1964 | I extended my battery to the max. available amount of 18kWh. When I really push my bike hard, I can get the range down to about 100miles (100% down to 0% charge … not healthy for your battery to do that regulary). Usually I can easily get 150miles range. I was considering the Zero motorcycles when getting my bike. The initial cost and fact that I hadn’t been on a motorcycle for many years factored into my decision. My 390 Duke purchase was ideal at that moment of time but I’d definitely consider an electric again when looking for my next bike. I guess my point is, if money wasn’t an option to my MC purchase, a Zero MC would be what I would be riding since I use it to commute and take a Sunday cruise. Yeah, the sound would be missed but it would be the cool factor of low/zero emissions and having something that is cutting edge/conversation piece.

Zero S/SR is the best motorcycle type I've ever owned. In the same token, owning a Tesla is better than any gas powered car I've ever owned. I don't do anything over 98 on ANY motorcycle off the track, and I don't go to the track anymore. Purely anecdotally but the lack of sound makes me feel safer because I'm just another vehicle on the road. I've stored my bike for over two months uncharged and it didn't lose a single percentage of charge in that time. I've put "gas" into my bike at convenience stores and other places, and often joke about how I can refuel at more places than gas motorcycles. The technology is only going to get better. The instant torque and lack of shifting/single drive is something I can never, ever, ever give up now. I hate when I'm forced to ride a gas powered vehicle now - it feels so... shitty.

Elliott Vader Why do you do 108 in your Jetta, exactly? Unless you’re ripping it on the autobahn, I see no need to ever drive or ride that fast in public. Doing so is completely irresponsible as well as reckless and very illegal (well over every posted speed limit) where I live. So to answer your question, it’s because I’m not irresponsible and don’t drive recklessly. Top speed is ultimately meaningless because even the shittiest cars can go over 100 - doesn’t mean they ever should.

same here. After riding gas-bikes for over 15 years I am now extremely happy with my Electric Naked-Bike. Regarding to range, the new 2020 Models from Energica have enough Batterycapacity for 200-250 KM. Energica claims up to 400KM, but based on my experience with the 2019 model, I say 200 KM are easy possible, even when you ride sporty. Charge times. I can Charge up my bike in 20 Minutes or less to 80% State of Charge. So after a 2 hour ride you have to be very quick to go to the toilet and refuel yourself with a cup of coffee in order to not be slower than the recharging of the motorcycle.

I've been riding electric bikes for a quite few years now. Yes a few years. I've ridden Lead Acid Battery moped scooters, I own a 1st gen BMW C-Evolution with the Long Range package, and my brother used to have a Lightning LS-218 as a track toy. Lead Acid batteries aren't great for a whole lot of things, but the batterypack in that moped did get a reliable 110km range at 45kph. It was advertised with 160km range though and it never made that, it got maybe 130km when it was brand new and over the course of a couple of years that dropped to 110, which was fine for my 80 ish km daily commutes. Upgrading it from lead acid to lithium polymer would be almost a 1000 euro investment (including charger, battery management etc), replacing the lead acid batteries would have run me maybe 300 euro. But keep in mind that this is a 300 euro 'maintenance' fee about every 40.000km. A regular petrol fueled moped has a maintenance interval of about 3000km, need to get valves adjusted, belts inspected, sparkplugs replaced, oil, filters the whole works. This is still a 250-300 euro service and it happens much much more frequently. Minor services like brushes and other wear components, that's about the same either way. The biggest downside I experienced with that electric moped, was people who ride bicycles with electric support are twunts who will unplug another bike in order to charge their own. And because these kinds of bikes use regular plugs and outlets, the charge cord doesn't lock. I eventually modified the theft alarm to start blaring if the charger was unplugged, before it was done charging, without the key in the bike. That did help a lot, 135dBa of instant punishment for unplugging my bike made people plug it back in real fast. My BWM C-Evolution, it's a couple years old now. I did have it restricted to an A2 license, because that was more convenient to me. And let's be real, for commuting and light sightseeing, 35kW is plenty. It's pegged to 135kph top speed, but again, the speed limit here has recently been lowered to 100kph. It's plenty to overtake a lorry on the motorway. As for the range, BMW promised me 160km when I bought the bike almost 50.000km ago. So far they haven't broken their promise in the slightest. Heck I am convinced they sold me a battery that could do almost 200km, just so it will never go under the advertised range. I charge up at work, I rarely have to charge at home at all. So in that regard it's pretty much free to ride. It takes about 4 hours to fully charge from a household socket, and it'll take a 30-80% charge from a fast charger in about 30-40 minutes. Going on a roadtrip with the lads, it takes a bit more planning, because he have to sort of aim for cafe's where there's a charger nearby enough that I can plug my bike in to charge. But that isn't that much of a problem really. I mean it's a country half the size of Delaware and there's 35.000 public chargers and over 100.000 private chargers, though a considerable amount of those are "privately owned" by a hotel or restaurant, so they are effectively still public. The LS-218 was a brilliant track toy, but far from cheap to run. It is scary fast. That's really all I can say about that. Setting it to have a linear throttle response is a brave thing to do. That thing really showed what an electric bike is capable of if you make no compromises. And I am not ashamed that being a scooter rider I am not the rider who can take that bike anywhere near it's limits. So I'd say electric bikes are perfectly viable for commuting and general urban mobility, but it really depends on where you live. I can ride anywhere in my country without ever having to worry that I will not be able to find a charger. Even in the most rural of area's there are going to be cafe's and restaurants who will have a charger. Or who will at least have an accessible outlet for slow charging. But even then, spending an hour over some drinks will get me enough charge to get to a fast charger where I can top up sufficiently in 20 minutes to get home. And for serious roadtrips, I just borrow my friend's X-Adv and in exchange he gets to "play Jetsons" as he puts it on my C-Evolution.

Funny you say that. I went for a demo ride when the Zero SR/F came out. One of the guys was pretty arrogant and down on electrics (Harley "bad-ass"). He got on one and twisted the throttle and the bike rocketed out from under him. It was a mess. I wish I had my phone out recording it. To me, the new SRs are almost scary fast. The acceleration is instant and can catch you off guard if you aren't prepared.

Your energy density comparison between chemical gasoline and a battery pack isn’t valid. Gasoline stores pure chemical potential energy but when burned, it isn’t fully transformed into usable power which results in energy losses of sound and heat. This is called Efficiency, and electric vehicles of all types are simply better at it than gas vehicles due to bigger things being more energy efficient and electric vehicles sourcing their energy from power plants (very being and pretty efficient) compared to your engine (much smaller and more less efficient in comparison).

Very good point. as you point out, IC engines decline performance/efficiencies over time as much as if not more than current battery tech. If you were to replace a battery and replace a motor, the motor might be cheaper today. I believe this will change within the next couple years as tech gets better. ...and the new battery will most likely have more power and last longer than the last one. I don't think this is always the case for ICE.

E-motorcycles would be well suited to the commuting/errand role, but at present there just aren't many aiming for this power range (19-34 kW, 25-46 HP). Just the Zero S & FXS, with perhaps the Chinese Evoke Urban S & Niu RQi coming in the near future. The Zeros are up to twice the price of a comparable 250-400 cc, because batteries are still so expensive. Alas, most current e-motorcycle offerings are more like the 1st generation Tesla Roadster. Fast, but expensive, heavy (for a sports car), and with so much range anxiety. Rich man's toys. That said, I like the idea of quiet running, mechanical simplicity and environmental goals. Only expendables would be tires, brake fluid/pads, and belt, so maintenance intervals could climb into the cage range. A moderately priced and powered electric (I don't need to go 100+ mph on my commute) would make a useful complement to a gas motorcycle (for more sporty or-far flung adventures). Not great for some living situations, but if you've got a garage for nightly charging you're set.

They're still too expensive for what you get, but the MSRP is a misleading figure to compare. A more real-world comparison vs a dino-bike would be to figure the cost of ownership over a 5-year financing period (I don't know about you, but I'm not buying a brand-new vehicle with cash up front), including all the things - the vehicle payments themselves, registration, insurance, fuel and other consumables, maintenance & repair costs, etc. If you have somewhere to plug in at home overnight, that takes your fuel costs to near-zero, especially if your power company has time-of-use rates which makes overnight off-peak energy practically free. As always, YMMV, and as I said, I still think the electric bikes on offer are too expensive for what you get - just saying, it's not quite as bad as it looks just by the MSRP alone, and it's getting better every year.

But with this said my situation is unique. I have a level one charger at work. Also there’s chargers in the mountains where I ride so my bike is always topped off when I ride. So it’s super rare that my battery level is below 1/3rd. But that’s my situation. I understand that not everyone has my situation but I’m glad I do.

Electric vehicles are great around town or commuting short distances. At present, for long journeys they need a completely different mindset - one that can accept long breaks far more frequently that we're otherwise used to and they need some forward planning - if there's nowhere to charge, you might want to think again! In fact, you want a backup plan for when your chosen charger doesn't work and, ideally, a backup plan for your backup charger... Going off on a complete tangent, there was some amazing scenery in that video. I wouldn't get far in a place like that on any type of vehicle - I'd be stopping every few feet to take a photo!

I think the companies who produce electric cars/motorcycles should standardize the batteries they use and make it swappable. So in the future you don't have to wait for your batteries to charge you just swap the ones on your vehicles to the pre charged ones in a power station. Kinda like what we do for propane tanks.

One thing that is misleading when it comes to comparing energy density as our Boi Hammy Lube does, is the ability to actually transfer the stored or potential energy into go juice at the tyre. For instance, a really, really, REALLY, thermally efficient I.C. engine can convert about 40-ish % of the fuels potential energy to power at the crank, with the rest lost to friction or heat expelled into the cooling system. Electric motors are capable of transferring something closer to 90% of the stored electrical potential energy to the output shaft, mostly since there is only 1 component of an electric motor that moves and dissipates energy to friction. What this ultimately means is that if we have 3 gallons of fuel on a standard bike at 36KWhr/gallon that's 108KWhr of chemical potential, but if only 40% makes its way to raw crank-shaft power, that means a 3 gallon tank only has ~42 KWhr of usable energy. so to match that, an electric bike would only need a 50KWhr battery to match the usable energy of a gas bike. Overall I think the idea of electric motorcycles is very interesting and I'm ready to see what comes from the proliferation of electrification.

Engines are also neither light nor small; while the battery pack is bigger than the gas tank (comparable to engine), the motor is much smaller (comparable to transmission) and there isn't a transmission on electric - my Zero SR/F they pack a 14.4 kW-hr battery and 110HP motor where the traditional engine and transmission are, and what would be my gas tank is a storage compartment, but I could get a "charge tank" (extra circuit for faster charging), or a power tank (extra battery for extended range). And because of that, it's surprisingly practical for a truly naked bike. I can carry my lunch in my Zero, not so much on my H-D Dyna Fatbob, nor my SR400, and each has the same ballpark of range (SR400

I've ridden an electric Gogoro 125cc 100kmh class electric scooter in Taiwan which has swappable batteries so you don't have to ever charge. The scooter was better in almost every way compared to the 125 Yamaha I had and the range was almost as comparable. I rode the bike all day including riding up a mountain and back into the city and I still had half a charge left. These scooters could accelerate much quicker as it had instant torque off the line and they were also not silent with a futuristic electric whine. I hope they can expand to other countries with their whole ecosystem of battery swap stations as there was no disadvantage with having to wait recharging and as the batteries on a bike are not as big as a car you don't need machinery to swap batteries out. The Gogoro scooter had 2 batteries under the seat and still enough room for a helmet. Gogoro is so successful in Taiwan that they have produced hundreds of thousands of electric scooters and are getting almost 10% of the motorcycle market there and 90% of the electric bike market. The system has also been utilised by third party manufacturers like Yamaha to create their own electric scooters for the Taiwanese market but use the same battery system. Petrol engines won't be going anywhere soon but it's exciting seeing a choice in the market that's being lead by technology.
