Electric Power Steering on my Dune Buggy for $75?? In this video I’m covering me installing a Prius electric power steering on my dune buggy. This is the power steering unit off of a 2006 Toyota Prius. The idea of this video is to show you how I installed my power steering so you can get ideas for your own.
The unit from 2004 to 2009 Toyota Prius’s will all work. It cost me 75$ from a local Pic a Part for the module, steering joints , and power steering motor.
It’s pretty simple to wire up and it works great! You just have to be creative.
Please enjoy the video!
Feel free to ask questions in the comments and to like the video!

It might be a good idea to add a collapsible section in the steering shaft in case you run into something the steering shaft won’t impale your chest?

I love the EPAS mounting bracket. It's neat, clean, simple, and effective...everything we should always seek to do with fabrication. I'm not as wild about welding on a steering shaft. That's not a very good idea because a break could suddenly leave you without steering. That exact move killed F1 legend Ayrton Senna. If it can happen to Williams F1 of the 1980s, when they were at their absolute best, it can happen to anyone. There are couplers for virtually any steering shafts, and you can grind a Double D on an existing shaft. You should use them for your own safety.

When the shaft was solid, not hollow I would have considered using it as an ID for a larger pipe that would cover both shafts. I could not tell if that was an option in your situation.

Great job. I been looking for a way to put power steering on my 1934 Plymouth, just don't have room on the engine to put another pully for conventional steering. The shafts look just like the ones on my steering already. I think everything will bolt up easy with a few cuts on the shafts like you did. I couldn't hear the motor running when you were demoing. the unit. Is it that quiet? That would be great. Thanks allot and again great video.
@cludardgarage402
@cludardgarage402 2 года назад
That would be awesome! You will have to let me know how it does in the Plymouth! Also yes you can’t even hear it! It’s pretty much silent. So times I would ask myself if it’s actually on then I would turn it off and it was way hard to turn so I knew it was working haha

Did you do any sort of modulation knob to adjust the amount of assist? or just run the stock assist?
@cludardgarage402
@cludardgarage402 2 года назад
No I just ran the stock module so it’s not adjustable. But it doesn’t feel to light or to heavy when steering!
@el_kuks
@el_kuks 2 года назад
In OE application unit must have speed input to correct assisting power. In this application it just runs in emergency mode. Same with electric hydraulic power steering pumps from Volvos - they just run in safety mode and don`t do any adjusting like they should do in OE application.

So how does it feel on high speed?? Is it smoother than it should be?? Because what i know is that kind of power steering (EPS) receives data from the car ECU about vehicle speed so that it controls the feel and the ease of turning the wheel. So that it gets heavier on high speed and smoother on low speeds.
@cludardgarage402
@cludardgarage402 Год назад
Ya I havent really noticed it. I typically dont do high speeds all the time. Im usually averaging 30 to 40 mph crusing around the dunes. I might top at 70 mph and then back off. So I havent noticed it being hard to steer at high speeds. Thanks for taking the time to watch!

Thanks for watching it! I’m working on a video now, but since you asked it handled awesome through the bumps! It’s crazy it actually made it a lot less stressful to drive because I never felt like the steering wheel was getting ripped out of my hands like It did before Haha. I can drive it pretty aggressively with one hand. It seems pretty strong I have a couple other friends that put the unit on before me and none of us have had any problems with it!

Yes the 3 signal wires just ground together.
@hummerguy
@hummerguy Год назад
Can you just use the black and red for it to work?
@cludardgarage402

No because the red and black are only the ground and power and you will need a signal wire to make it function properly.
@hummerguy
@hummerguy Год назад
@@cludardgarage402 That make sense, from what I had researched, it seems like it'll work in a "fail safe mode" so if I had just the power and ground connected it seems like it'll work but won't auto center or won't adjust its sensitivity to speed? Or would it just completely not function at all?
@cludardgarage402
@cludardgarage402 Год назад
I know it works the way I wired it up to my buggy. But ya I'm not sure.... how it will work. But if you do try it with just the 2 wires let me know. Ha ha. Im curious. What are you thinking of putting it on?
@hummerguy
@hummerguy Год назад
@@cludardgarage402 Gotcha, yea I'll be most likely be hooking it up within the next 3 weeks. I'm putting it on a BRDM 2, it has a transmission PTO power steering, but its pretty weird to use because any time the clutch is disengaged, it loses power steering. If this works well, I'm going to get another one and put it in my m35a2 as well. The only thing that has me concern is the weight of the vehicles, but I think it should handle it fine if I'm not at a standstill using it

This approach could be used to add power steering to any car or van that never had it, or an EV conversion where the engine driven power steering will no longer work. Plenty of cars out there use electric power steering now so loads to choose from in junk yards.
