In this episode I carry out fault finding for a storage heater that wasn't working in a domestic property in east London.
So I arrived at this job where the client told me that their storage heater stopped working earlier in the year. They had the heater checked by someone and they told the customer that the heater was working fine.
The first thing I did was check the spur connected to the heater after tracing what looked like the power cable to this this point. Upon taking the spur off I discovered that the heater had been disconnected.

The next thing I did was make sure that the cables running from the consumer unit to the heater were by carrying out insulation resistance testing. That checked out OK so I knew it was going require a process of elimination to find out what the fault was.
Having inspected the spur I could see it was in bad condition. So, I decided to change the spur to see if this had any impact. It did and the heater started up all OK. Another job done.

Pretty obvious it's been disconnected a whole lot longer then 9 months, the state of the tape in the backbox alone. And the heater if definitely more than 5 years old! Looks like 20+ years of grime

I can't take dishonest people, they're clearly lying and know exactly why it's been disconnected.

The whole deal sounds dodgy..... There is no way it could have stopped working - someone disconnected it!!! Go careful....

Surely you should’ve replaced the 20amp DP switch like for like

Love to know why it was disconnected in the first place 🤨 I’m like you, I instantly thought the cable must have a fault on it and the customer is blagging

So it's only "social housing" propertys that can be a "minefield" your comment is very snobbish

So much corrosion in those wall boxes... and the state of the screws on the 3 pin socket at 9:01 ! That house must have a serious damp problem, or maybe there was a water leak from upstairs. Anyway, an intriguing video, cheers Delroy.

Could someone please help me out. My storage heater has stopped working totally but the normal heater still works fine, the fuse box is ok. So what could be my problem?

Did your fused connection unit not have a flex outlet? Would have saved removing some plaster and done a neater job. 👍🏼

First of your video's I've watched and really enjoyed it, I think you did a really professional job of listening to them avoiding the subject or what actually had taken place with the heater supply! Those were some nasty looking backboxes.

I enjoy watching your vids (from NZ). Funny how you mentioned that the tenant said the night store heater is 5 years old ... more like 30! And it looked like it was disconnected years ago.

Hmmm... flex outlet spur would have been better job
@paultipton743
@paultipton743 4 года назад
Depends on the size of the heater, if its 3.4 kw I've seen plenty of fused spurs that have over heated and melted the fuse carrier to the back as that take more than 13 amps
@djb774

Paul Tipton ok 20a DP switch with bottom flex outlet then... don’t like the idea of cutting out plaster and putting flex through a knock out... it’s a bit rough
@paultipton743
@paultipton743 4 года назад
@@djb774 yea I know what you mean with Knocking the plasterboard out, I think the existing switch did have a flex outlet already which was used before but the metal back box was proud and rubbing against the flex cable. Could of used one with a front entry flex point or just another manufacturers.

I would've PAT tested the heater too before re-connecting it, never believe what a customer says

I'm a gas engineer come across this bull from customers sometimes, I've condemned appliances and they call some other engineer to turn it back on. Never believe customers. If it's not connected it doesn't work furthermore its disconnected for a reason.
