THAT IS JUST BREAKING THE BACK COVER OFF! It is not meant to come off like that. Those vacuums are taken apart by sliding the side bumper rails forward. Once they have been pulled out, the top of the vacuum comes off and all the internals are accessible - the back cover just lifts out. Please note this in your introduction. Removing it the way shown may break the tabs and the back cover will never stay on again. The proper method has already been mentioned by others in the comments.

I learned from a dealer, that treating the cord with Armor- All will help it retract smoother - it works great!

Great vid, thanks! Electrolux's "Epic Series" was manufactured from 1992-2000 in several successive color schemes. The two-toned gray, a Model C102D like your customer's, sold between 1995-1997. The uprights came in two trims: the 2500s (basic) & the 3500s (standard); and the cylinders came in one, the 6500s.. The Floor Pro shampooer/scrubber completed the series. Electrolux Corporation, the former US subsidiary to AB Electrolux of Sweden, changed its name to Aerus LLC in 1999 and continues selling the same basic style of uprights as this one due to its effectiveness and customer satisfaction. Thanks for showing us how to be DIYers!

Helpful video, and I successfully used this method to remove the rear cover. BUT, it's not the correct way. The right way is to slide off the two side bumpers and remove the entire top (There's a trick to getting them started, shown in other videos) Nevertheless, prying the back off worked for me. Seeing the location of the tabs in this video helped me know where to place the screwdriver to simultaneously push the tabs down and pry the body up. Getting it back on was tricky too, and I almost resorted to filing a bit off the plastic pins. HERE'S ANOTHER TIP: Why did the spring stick in the first place? Surely Electrolux didn't design them to stick every time they were pulled out too far? I found that the spring and the track it rides in were a bit dirty/rusted and by wiping them off and spraying with silicone, it could be pulled completely out without sticking. Also, cleaning the entire length of the cord and then wiping it down with Armor-All (or talcum powder) will help it retract faster.

This video, my rubber mallet and a can of WD-40, is why my Electrolux vacuum power cord is once again reeling back in; THANKS A BUNCH!!!

I stuck a screw driver into the openings on the white cover to help move the mechanism along instead of using my fingers to turn the wheel holding the spring. Eventually it results with the same fix and you feel the cord retracting. My bigger issue was with trying to put the cover back on. I pried it off (with effort) but the 4 notches were too far out to allow the cover to pop back on. I used pliers to break off of the lower clips holders since the 1 remaining clip was enough to securely hold the cover in place. If I have too I'll use a little duct tape though it looks and feels secure as is now. Thanks for showing where the cord retractor is!

Your presentation was great. My machine is a LUX Classic but much of it looks just like the one in your video, particularly the rear. I would have had a hard time figuring out how to remove the back cover without your demonstration. Mine did not have the retaining screw. Different model I guess. I had to wind up the metal spring by slowly spinning the small take up roller but it was jammed just like you showed. Thanks.

Yup, came here to say this--if you've got an older model and this back hasn't been opened in years (if ever), you really have to savage the thing to get it open. But so worth it!

also, you opened the canister wrong. pull the bumpers off going forward with the bag door open as not to break the back cover off. done it many a time

So what if the cord retracted ok, but is now jammed and won't release more than 1 foot of cord? I recently had the machine serviced, and the used it a couple of times before the cord got stuck. I don't really feel like paying $$ for the repair shop to fix it again, if I can avoid it. Plus, there's a pandemic around these, so I'm trying to maintain social distance, when possible. Thanks.
