This little black box from the 1960s lets nerdy keyboard players act like badass guitar players. Or something like that. "How Many More Times," the quintessential use of the wah, was originally written by Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin in 1968.

Exactly! That's why I was so surprised that you gave the Roland kit a 'real' feel. Totally agree, the new digital stuff comes close (organs & pianos as well as drums), but there's a certain performance feedback you get from real organic instruments that nothing can emulate. The way the instrument feels has a huge effect on the performance. I worry that both drummers & keyboardists are a dying breed because our instruments are so replaceable with software. That's why we gotta keep it alive to our dying breath, crowding the living room with our clunky ass drums & pianos, much to our wives/girlfriends' displeasure lol Ok rant over. Rock on brother!

Wow awesome. Wonder if Cherry Wainer used this. I heard in 1 of the songs that she slurred notes i guess would have to be done with the Wah pedal

Thanks!! And that would be historically earth shattering if Cherry Wainer used an Electro-mute (before Nov 1966) because that would predate the Vox wah which is commonly accepted as the first wah invented. If you remember the name of the song definitely let me know! I've been trying to prove that the Electro-mute (invented by Don Leslie) came a few years before Vox (Brad Plunkett) but I can't find any documents or patents to prove it.

@@ZeroChannelZero I'm a newb I actually don't think she was but I initially thought she may be here at 2:19 . she's just that fast ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dt5AOmi0wE0.html What is the name of the pedal to the right (I mean in front of it) of the pedal board on the B-3?

@@danwat1234 Wow good catch! She definitely does something to change the tone, and you can see her flip a switch on the right side which, as far as I know, isn't a stock Hammond B3 thing (at least mine doesn't have that switch). Leslie and other companies made a lot of mod kits for the Hammond and I bet that's one of them. It's not the same thing I've got but it may be a chorus mod that's installed on her Hammond. Now I'm really curious. Might have to pop in to the Hammond forums and ask around. Again, good catch! Oh also the pedal above her bass pedalboard is just a standard volume pedal, although that itself can change the tone quality based on how hard you drive it. That's what makes these organs so cool, they're really expressive instruments.

@@ZeroChannelZero interesting it's not just volume. So if you weren't pressing on the pedal at all it's some preset volume, press it gets louder I assume. Some other control would change the speed of the rotating Leslie speakers... I don't have an organ I just am learning about them now.
@ZeroChannelZero

@@danwat1234 Yup, it's essentially a volume pedal but it directly controls the amplifier gain so, just like a guitar amp, when you crank it you get some interesting changes in color/saturation/tone. Oh man the Leslie control is another cool facet. It basically has 2 controls: 1) On/Off and 2) Slow/Fast. The slow setting gives you a "chorus" and the fast gives you "tremolo/vibrato". I put it in quotes because that's not really what it is, but that's how it sounds. When you watch a true Hammond player in action (which I am NOT), it's amazing to see how they're not just playing the notes with their fingers but they're practically tap dancing on the Volume, Leslie controls AND Bass Pedals at the same time. Throw into the mix the knee-operated Wah like I've got here, and it's a full body performance!
