Electroconvulsive Therapy Day One

Finding Life Again

I have been battling severe depression and anxiety for seven years. I have tried many different medication combos and all have failed to improve my symptoms. I am undergoing a treatment called electroconvulsive therapy which is a treatment for depression that has a much higher success rate than any antidepressant. For the length of my treatment, I will be keeping a video journal of my progress. Due to the lack of testimonies about ECT on RU-vid, I have decided to share my journal with the community. Thank you for taking the time to check out my channel. I hope you find my videos informative and helpful.

My mother has been getting ECT treatments for about 16 or so years now, she is one of the longest running treated patients in our area. They definitely have helped her, but I truly feel for all those like her who go through these treatments. You are all so strong!

I have had ECT 18 times, and I felt better than I had ever been feeling up to that point, but strangely enough my short term memory wasn't affected, but my long term was. I have chunks of my memories gone, forgotten how to get to places quite a bit, and although I have these gaps I would try ECT again, as it gave me more help than medicines ever did. Maybe because mine were bilateral I feel like big chunks are gone, and if I'd done unilateral maybe the loss wouldn't be as bad as I think it is. Jenny THANK YOU for sharing your ECT diary with us, I wish I would have had a camera when I was undergoing treatment. I hope you're doing well after the treatments!

Can memory loss be permanent? Can I forget something forever?

I remember watching your ECT videos years ago when I was in the psychiatric hospitals. I ended up being admitted again this last week for 10 days and I got ECT while I was there and the only reason I wasn't freaking out was because I remembered your videos. I felt a bit better after my first ECT!

Thanks for sharing these videos. I'm crying while I watch tô your videos. I've been going thru a long period of severe depression, bpd, anxiety, panic attacks, etc. I had just change psychiatrists and the new one suggested the ECT procedure. So then I had 3 psychiatrists following me. One that I would see each 2 days to talk about life and current events, another one that would take about my medicine, and the third one who would take care of the ECT thing. The first day was so shocking to me. I passed out because of the anesthesia and woke up crying because I was so scared...

I've had 23 ECT so far, but with regards to headaches, a tip if a take a couple of anti headache pills one hour before your treatment, the headache after ECT will be greatly reduced. i've used panodil or penix

Is it just me, or does she actually seem a little less depressed after treatment? The way she's talking in the car on her way to treatment, vs the way she talks afterwards.

I've been doing ECT since December of 2014. So far I've had 21 treatments and still going. It has help I would say better than medication. It has actually been since December of 2014 since I have been in the physic hospital, normally Im inpatient at least ever month or two month but like I said I have not been inpatient since December, which I can say it has helped me. But I'm still struggling pretty bad, it really does suck, I'm not sure how to keep myself going..

TheBuddyBears I want to send you so much encouragement. I'm so sorry that things are so horrible right now. I encourage you to keep going with the treatments and talk to your doctor about ways you can adjust the ECT. It is different for everyone. I talk about different ways I adjusted my treatments in my other videos if you are interested.

Look into deep brain stimulation! They offer it as a new technology for people suffering from depression. Or perhaps Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation like the Fisher Wallace or CES Ultra.

You can also try ketogenic diet, this is really a chemical exchange operation in your brain and surly it works. www.healthline.com/health/bipolar-disorder/ketogenic-diet-treat-bipolar-disorder

I'm glad you're posting these. For years and years I've had major depression, and I've finally decided to kill myself now that my kids are independent. However, I'll give ECT a shot first. If that doesn't work, I'll go ahead and kill myself. I hate these people who say you have brain damage, etc. they have no idea that's the least of your worries when you finally try ECT. For me, it's either try it, or I'm going to kill myself anyway. I hate people who don't know how much Major depression makes you suffer, and literally nothing is worse. They should quit posting! Thanks for sharing.

It’s crazy to see 10 years later how many options have emerged. Ketamine, TMS, DBS. DBS is showing EXTREMELY high success rates.

I've been thinking about this option for about 3 years now, I have the same problems of depression an anxiety since I was a kid, been on and off different medications for about 4 years, nothings working. You do look a lot happier after, that could just because you got M&M's and Smarties next to you,lol

@showandtell5498

I'm not sure whether or not Jenny replied, so I apologize if this is redundant. I had one full course of ECT about five months ago. Initially my short term memory was so bad that I got lost in my own neighborhood while I was walking my dog. Now, though, my short term memory is almost back to normal... or maybe I just got better at working around it? You adapt, and the people around you adapt.

I have had an ongoing severe abdominal pain on my right side that gets so severe at times I just wanted to kill myself. I have been in a psych hospital because of the pain driving me to attempt suicide. Could ECT possibly help with physical pain? If it could help with my physical pain I may not get strong urges to want to die. The medical doctors for some reason have not or will not figure out a diagnoses and treatment for the pain. I suspect because of my lack of money and insurance.

I'm by no means taking away from your agony but has your physician used the word "Somnithized" I'm spelling it wrong but its the physical manifestation of mental anguish be it anxiety, depression, etc. I hope things work out for you.

i wonder why nobody tries hormone therapy and supplements instead of ect which is a last resort. i was horribly depressed for years and a trial of natural thyroid hormone and progesterone and testosterone did the trick.

Yes! hormone replacments, nutrient deficiencies, food intolerances and leaky gut. There are so many depressed in the Western world. I suffered for 25 years of hell. Only to find out I had many of the above issues. Please people look into these things.

Best to keep it quiet and not tell anyone unless the one's that are necessary for your aftercare. It just pays to keep this to yourself as people are very judgmental.

check your diet. people are suffering from mental illness often because they are eating things that affect them badly. leaky gut, thyroid issues and nutrient deficiencies. I fell bad for people on all these meds and doing such extreme thing to find relief. I suffered for 25 years. I know the pain but there are other options.
