I only see 3 demonstration videos from these guys online. All 3 are very small fires so I'm thinking they kinda know it doesn't work as good as a normal size extinguisher. Good for small size fires but for safety I wouldn't use these for anything bigger then a grease pan fire.

The driver stopped , but was so spooked that he jumped out of the drivers side window. I had an extinguisher, I stopped along with a truck driver. It might not affect the windshield, and it says it's non-corrosive, but it's worth being aware that Part 139 airports and fueling agents are required to have BC fire extinguishers because ABC fire extinguishers have historically been corrosive on aluminum. Maybe this isn't, the FAA is certainly slow to change rules, but I'd hate for you to put out a hangar fire or something like that and then cause problems with the aircraft.

Good idea and I would be curious to see how this works outside with high wind. A standard 5# FE with 195 PSI would be superior probably in that scenario. Not to mention you have more stand off with a stored pressure FE. Would like to pick one of these up and test them.

Some very good insight. One thing not covered in the video is that Element can also fight a fire in confined spaces by absorption. In a car it can be deployed and the gas that comes out will put out a fire in a confined space without having to actively fight the flames. Element is currently used by police, special forces, and military in other parts of the world and we are currently working with North American Law Enforcement to make it standard equipment for the men and women that protect our nation.

It's about time these made it to America.. These have been available in countries like South Africa for sometime known as "Fire Stryker". They burn Potassium Nitrate, so it is safe to human health and is a good alternative to a traditional fire extinguisher. www.desert-wolf.com/dw/products/fire-and-rescue/fire-extinguishers/fire-stryker-portable.html I'll definitely be picking up one of these Element Fire Extinguishers when I have the chance ($); But I am glad that a company finally brought these to market in the United States. While youtube videos or demonstrations of Element fire extinguishers may be limited.. just search youtube for Fire Stryker and there're plenty of videos showing regular people trying out these sticks to put out test fires including grease fires.

I'm not a specialist, but I do believe it would work properly in an engine bay, because even with a regular fire extinguisher we should open just a little bit of the hood and then insert the extinguishing element in to it (cause it also means less oxygen).
@ToddKing

@@c.varela Yes, you don't want a big whuump of flames in your face if you open the hood. A couple years ago I had a electrical fire on the engine wiring harness on a motorcycle I was riding. People should pay more attention. From the Element website: "WHERE IS ELEMENT MADE? Element is designed and manufactured in Italy." It's not a revolutionary US space program product, this is just a guy who bought the US marketing rights to something that has been on sale in Europe for years. If it was so fantastic, all of Europe would be raving about it by now and it would be kitemarked to the European EN 3 fire extinguisher approval standard. It isn't. "IS ELEMENT CERTIFIED? Element cannot be used to substitute extinguishers in regulated environments that require a UL (or UL endorsed) certification." In the US that means this thing has no UL rating and meets no NFPA standard, cannot be used to meet DOT requirements for extinguishers on commercial vehicles either. Keep watching future videos to see if Jay replaces his big wall-mounted Halon extinguishers with these little tubes. I predict not. Moral: Buy a real fire extinguisher that has a real rating, real approvals and can put out more than a 1 or 2 square foot RU-vid demo fire.

Please correct me if I am wrong but.... - Jay is not an expert on tackling car fires. - The fact that this product lasts for 50 seconds seems irrelevant - there are no claims made in this video as to how effective this product is at putting out fires vs the existing fire extinguishers. - the standard ABC powder fire extinguisher appears to me to be the best at putting out fires that you may encounter in cars. Is this better? we are not told. - this technology was developed by Russian rocket scientists ( well done to them ) it is manufactured in Italy and distributed by various companies around the world, all of whom come across as salesmen who put up rather shoddy videos and evade questions about how this product compares to the standard and cheap ABC powder fire extinguishers. - the "condensation aerosol" that ejects from this product seems to be fairly directionless - it looks like you would have to be uncomfortably close to the fire to get it to work. Would it work in a wind? Me. I'm going to get a standard ABC powder fire extinguisher. Put it in the passenger compartment of my old Ferrari where I can easily get it and am constantly reminded that it is there.

In an actual vehicle fire, you can't beat a 5+ pound A,B,C dry chemical extinguisher. These products have their place. But when my car's on fire, I want the best proven product. This is a gamble. Plus, you have to be right up on the fire for it to work. With a dry chemical you can safely discharge from a distance. I'll choose the dry chem any day of the week.

Is this "extinguisher" UL listed? What kind of testing has it gone through to ensure that this is a safe product? What happens if someone drops this or it comes in contact with combustible material? How close to a fire do you have to get in order for this product to be successful in extinguishing the fire? If you're using this product in an enclosed space, while extinguishing a fire, I'd be interested to see how much smoke is generated from the actual fire. An enclosed space could fill with smoke thus causing decreased oxygen levels which could then result in a person passing out. If you have to extinguish a fire for over one minute, I will guarantee that the fire is too large for this to handle. You're best to just get out, call 911 and let the professionals handle the situation. The owner makes it sound good but there is not enough information. Just a warning to people that, until these have been tested and listed properly, do not replace existing portable fire extinguishers.

I bought a bunch of these after watching this video. Ran across a fire today and deployed one and it made the fire worse. I ran across a smoldering fire in some wood on a hilltop. Something a 5lb canister extinguisher would take care of. I deployed one of these and it did nothing. Hold it some space away and the slight breeze made this thing do nothing. Moved if closer and the compressed gas coming off fueled the fire and made it bigger, blowing the embers into flame. This is NOT a replacement for a fire extinguisher in the slightest. I am sure it works in the situations shown in the videos, but is something was on fire fire, it is junk.

Make them thing where they can sell for $30 bucks instead of $89 and youd have something.

I don't know if you've watched any tests of these sticks, but they aren't very effective. I wouldn't trust anything to one. What would be the one thing you would do to show the effectiveness of your fire extuingusher? Extuingush a fire? Don't tell me it works, show me.

How does this perform on a real fire? I need to see it side by side with a traditional extinguisher. Anyone know how they do? I'm very interested in this

Every fire extinguishing system has its benefits as well as drawbacks. The obvious benefits of the Element are its compact size, no messy clean up, relatively long run time and no maintenance. However, one must be relatively near the fire in order to extinguish it because the range is only a few feet. Fighting a fire outdoors can also be problematic because a gust of wind could carry the oxygen absorbing cloud away from where the fire is burning. The size of the fire could also preclude the use of the Element extinguisher. I don't think that I'm about to replace my 25# CO2 extinguisher in my garage or my 10# ABC extinguisher in my kitchen. I'm not adverse to vacuuming up and rinsing off some baking soda after a grease fire. However, I might consider buying an Element for my car in case of a "small" electrical fire. I would definitely abandon my car and call "911" If my engine compartment was engulfed in a gasoline fire. This type of extinguisher has been around for some time in Europe and was developed for the space station, where compressed gas portable extinguishers just could not be used. Great application for it! It is even supplied by some car manufacturers in Europe and the Middle East.

WTF are you doing. So much blabla instead of going outside and extinguishing a small fire at a (japanese ;-)) motorcycle or even burning some drops of fuel . Jay, this is below your level. The extinguisher guy should show it ouside CA if open flames are not allowed.

These are garbage. I'm a fire extinguisher guy. You have to be right on top of the fire and very close to it. Any wind and it doesn't work. Has about a 2 foot reach versus at least 8ft with 1lb extinguishers. May be good for having in your backpack or car glove box but not good for normal fire fighting at all.

How about showing actually putting out a fire. (preferably a car fire they seems to be saying it can handle.) Then tell me which race sanctioning bodies that will allow this pyrotechnic device to be in the car. (hint: the bottle in the race car is for the driver, not the car.) Toss one in a campfire, and gasoline fire.

Cool product, but it doesn’t seem to have the range of 5lb extinguisher. A well built extinguisher will last as long. Extinguishers that are used in commercial spaces or required by insurance or government regulations require servicing for which this extinguisher wouldn’t work. Also the rating was not discussed. As others have said a live fire demo would have been good. I think this extinguisher has potential but would sill carry a back up.

I hear a lot of buzzwords and marketing speak that makes me think these aren't really all that effective. "Developed for the space program", "works at the molecular level", okay but how does it work and how effective is it? The fact that the chemical is rising and they can safely breath it when the stick is going off makes me think that it wouldn't be effective for anything except the smallest fires. The gas rising up tells me its done as soon as you release the gas. The few videos they do have shows that you have to get awfully close to the fire to put it out, and it takes quite a while to do the job. A regular fire extinguisher will leave the extinguishing material on the surface and will cool the surface to prevent flareup. I don't care if it's cleaner, I've got bigger problems if I'm putting out a fire. If I'm putting my safety on the line I want more than a slick sales pitch.

Potassium nitrate (KNO3) is a very poor extinguishing agent. No wonder this device has no Underwriters Laboratories certification.
