I love how Jay still has a sense of how far your money can go and what it's worth. Even though he's worth almost $500 million he still knows that 28k for a tool box is stupid expensive. Most people can't even afford a car that cost that much let alone just a box to hold your tools.

I push out those wrenches six day a week for a living. The tools are excellent. My dad wouldn’t use any other brand but Snap On. I hope he’s proud that I’m in the wrench shop. RIP dad.🔧❤️🙏🏻

I inherited my dad's Snap On tools and tool boxes which made his living for 53 years as a mechanic. The boxes work exactly like new, of course there are stains and scratches on the doors and sides. His tools are scratched and slightly disarrayed from when I moved them to my garage. It literally took a tow truck to pick up the 5 cabinets and place them on the trailer then again to off load them at my place! The tow truck driver knew my dad well and would not take a dime from me for the move! Awesome guy! Dad's Snap On boxes have many scrapes and a few deep, down to the bare metel scratches in them. I have been contemplating restoring the paint to new condition but also feel I should just apply a coat of wax and leave them as dad left them. These scratches are a testament to the hard work he did as a for real mechanic and not a "service technician". I'm on the fence, as to a tool box paint restoration. I do use his tools often, they are nicer than mine. My tools are all older Craftsman. Not quite the high finish and super tight fit of the older Snap On , but they have served me well for many years as a weekend warrior and handyman. I get a warm feeling using dad's tools!

I do collect old and modern tools. My favorite place because it is so close to me is the Habitat Restore. One of my recent finds was a Starrett # 443 ratchet with a 1916 patent date. It is a 5/8 female drive in good working condition. I had no idea Starrett made this type of tool. I also recently picked up a 12 piece set of Starrett machinist jacks and several Mitutoyo micrometers.

For the weekend mechanic, walking onto a Snap On truck means you've made it. That's fine, I remember feeling that way. For guys who fix other people's garbage for a living, the Snap On guy is basically a tax collector, ready to take your hard-earned money so that you can keep on making money. It's the price of living the life we chose to live. The Snap-On guy is just making a living too. Snap On makes some of the finest tools in the industry and the name rightly carries a certain amount of romance and respect, but keep in mind that it's not all fun and emotion. Depending on the particular job, you can make a fine pay check on Harbor Freight and Sears. Moral of the story, Snap-On makes beautifully durable tools, but that level of quality isn't necessary for most tools for most jobs. You have to balance convenience and debt.

i bought my nephew a four draw Rollcab when he was born(about 20 years ago),removed the Castors and fitted rubber pads so it could be used in his bedroom as a "domestic" set of Drawers. Originally filled with bay stuff(diapers,clothes and pacifiers) and over the years has had Shirts,Toys,Crayons and has had whatever else boys collect up until he was about 16 years old. Then it slowly started storing Tools,Manuals and other trinkets until he started his Trade as an apprentice Vehicle Mechanic and now it's proudly placed at his workplace where his planning to add a TopBox soon.

Yes, feels overpriced. But then again, it is for professionals that really value it (and see it as an 30+ year investment). Is like a thousand dollar (or way more) knife set. A professional chef will value it (and invest in it because of how long they last) but for everybody else they are just overpriced.
@bgd73

they work via their own credit line. The image factor, like at dealers or garages.. all that fairy taling stuff that runs through peoples heads. Another fact within integrity is a lot of worthless values written. I remember a toolbox on our military plane.. thousands of dollars. Basic tools. Some pros need incredibly nerdy numbers.

Marshall Dunlap So true! Some of my Craftman socket sets are almost 40 years old. I use them clean them up and put back in my $400.00 Craftman toolbox. It is the size of the one they were customizing. $30,000.00 for an empty toolbox is simply outrageous! I don't care how well made and secure it is.

I've been using Snap On tools since I was old enough to pick them up, wipe them off, and put them back in my dads tool box. He was a mechanic and I learned from him there's no such thing as cheap tools. You can buy cheap tools and replace them often or by good tools and not have to replace them. At the age of 73 and now retired I have the tools for three trades, mechanic, locksmith and pipefitter. Snap On is not the only good tool but they are one of the best.

@Everythingisgoingtobealright
@Everythingisgoingtobealright 7 лет назад
Eroc Wildson A $28k box isn't for a entry level guy, a dealer mechanic can easily make over 100k. Nobody pays list price, trade in value on a Snap On is usually about what you paid for it. I own a $15k Snap On box I have maybe 6k into it over 30 years.
@Obecny75
@Obecny75 7 лет назад
last time i checked the BOX HOLDING the tools doesnt help actually make any money. There is no debate that the right tool for the job will definitely make you more money, however the BRAND of tool can be argued.
@Everythingisgoingtobealright
@Everythingisgoingtobealright 7 лет назад
Obecny75 No question there are many, high quality tool manufacturers, and many high quality tool box manufacturers. Keep in mind most high quality European tools are not readily available in the US, and if you order them they end up being just as or more expensive than Snap On. For a guy who takes pride in his work and likes things to look good and feel good, cost is only a small factor. If you want to dig around in a $400.00 tool box for the next 30-40 years rock on brother. If my box went missing today I'd order a new one Monday morning. Do you want a Cruze or a Corvette? I'll take the Vette thanks.

At 9:29 mark, when the actual display of tools began, my jaw hit my keyboard. Jay/Joe Leno, go right ahead and let the Prada guy make his pitch, just as long as I can see that drawer full of wrenches/spanners. Money aside, those few minutes of viewing the tools were like being in a fine art museum - for blokes. Meanwhile here in DIY land, I will keep using my mix of Harbor Freight, Craftsman, and decent finds from pawn shops and garage sales. If I worked on cars for a living, it would be a different story, but I'm not sure if SnapOn would be how my story ended or began. I like the other commenter - "tools make you money, not the toolboxes."

My 72" KRL (Master series) was the upgrade from a NAPA purchased Homak bottom and top. Its been great. As I needed more room I bought a matching cart. Thankfully because of doing all heavy trucks I'm done needing more space. They're still great to look at but I think the last addition I may go for will be a side cab. Yes, they're expensive, but as was said - its the last box I will ever need. Now that its been 6 years it still runs like the day it was new. In terms of whats in my box - Everything from Snap-On to MAC to Harbor freight 12 point metric sockets I might have used one of in 10 years but its required by the company tool list. Napa adjustable wrenches because I don't use them often but they are still a reasonable quality product. Theres SK tools, LANG stuff, we buy what we buy and what works. Its all based on what we do. That being said - for the guys shocked over the price - those of us who use them in and out have tool sets and boxes that would blow your minds. Often times we own more stuff than the shop we work for does. And its usually over $100,000 by the time you own "everything" if you work on enough stuff. So a $28,000 tool storage that you can set up for your investment isn't really a shocker. I'm more pissed off over the fact that I have to own things I wont ever use and as such have had to literally throw money away to buy them. I've never needed a set of brake spring pliers or a hydraulic brake system bleeder (I have also not seen a vehicle in the shop with a hydraulic brake system in over 10 years). But the mandated shop tool list says I must own them. So there sits $120 worth of crap I will never use and little things like that are the waste of my money.

All the other tool boxes in the garage area are the standard black rubber wheels. I also love Jay's reaction every time Mr. Perry opens a drawer. He laughs, then catches himself and tries to say something positive about it. My tool boxes look just like Jay's. They make WAY more money off poor people than off people like Jay Leno, because poor people get themselves stuck in a rut of paying the Snap-on guy on a weekly basis for the next few decades, at exorbitant interest rates. Snap-on franchise owners have been reprimanded or even have had their franchises taken away from them for not pushing Snap-on's financing plans hard enough. That's why the Snap-on guys go so hard after the young mechanics just starting out; they know they are poor and easily duped.

As a DIYer I buy Snap-on for the most used hand tools. Hope to get a nice big Snappy box one day. Man they're pricey.

After 35 years I wound up with 5 different tool boxes, plus an old school locker to keep my winter coats and boots in, and a cabinet just for my manuals and paper work. I always wanted to buy a big roll around box. It's hard sometimes for new mechanics to appreciate just how good Snap-on tools are, MAC and Matco are good,but they aren't in the same class.

Nice boxes ! Everyone thinks Snap-on is overpriced but with a lifetime warranty, customer support,and precision you get what you pay for. I'd use them if I could afford them but I'll keep using my Craftsman tools.

So true about cheap tools. I like Harbor Freight for certain things and will continue to shop there. However, as of recently, I'm completely done with their wrenches. Their adjustable wrenches are useless. I haven't found anything they work for - they just slip off of anything. I went out a bought some at Autozone, Duralast brand, which isn't even as good as Snap-On. Wow, what a difference. Makes fixing things more fun and less of a headache.

Snap on for the most part is a pleasure to use. I do not own any snap on stuff yet. Yes the price is very high and the tools even used cost more than new tools from others. With that said, there is a market for them. Having a tool that is built out of hardened tool steel from top to bottom is nice. I also do know some of the snap on stuff is being outsourced to other countries where the other red brand buys. As with anything your mileage may vary. There is a nut for every bolt. Even if that nut costs 28K to own. If money were no object for me, snap on would be my first stop for anything that is hand tools. Power tools on the other hand I prefer other brands.

$12,000 would be drastically overpriced too. You can just about buy a new car for $12,000, and a car is WAY more complex and expensive to manufacture than any tool box Snap-on sells. Snap-on could sell it for $1,000 and still make a hefty profit. It's mostly just flat sheet metal with 90-degree bends with an extruded aluminum frame. You can build a 3-car garage for the cost of that toolbox: "Building a garage averages $50 per square foot. Homeowners report paying between $16,821 and $38,823. A single-car garage ranges $7,750 to $17,000, 2-car garage between $16,500 and $31,000, and 3 or more upwards of $28,500."

Back in 2004, when my old partner and I were building our new shop, Snap-On and Cornwell were my tool guys... I needed a new tool box; Modular system, a few new tools and a new laptop at the same time... So I pitted them against each other... the Snap-On guy just laughed me off. The Cornwell guy called me the evening after the Snap On guy was at my shop and told me to pick out the laptop I wanted, and then the color of my new tool box! Guess who got my business! I'm retired now and traded that tool box with all of the tools to a young mechanic who has great aspirations, for the labor involved to rebuild my pick up truck. It took him over a year, but he earned his tool box with flying colors! He now has the tools he needs to excel at his trade and I have a "Retirement Truck" that will last me the rest of my life. So I have over $40000 invested in a truck that cost me $3500 and will never be worth more than $10000, but as you know Jay, it's what it's worth to the guy driving it! I'll brag about J&T Automotive in Mineral Wells Texas for as long as I live, and show off their work every single day in the big ol Country Cadillac Ford F250 Dually that I get to drive every day! Tools get the job done! When the job is done the tools are still there. Don't let them rust, pass them on to the next mechanical genius!

My favorite SnapOn tool is my 18" star screwdriver It is the only screwdriver that can break loose really tight screws great for float bowls I think it's because the long shaft builds up torque and releases it with a snap without slipping out of the screw

Reid Rutledge $30,000.00 + after taxes, delivery fees, extended warranty... All my tool chest are Craftman and I have had them over 40 years. It's just as large and well laid out as the one they were customizing. Brand new tool boxes of similar size at Home Depot cost below $500.00! I am not going to lie though, I am really going to miss the quality, the reasonable prices and life time warranty of Sears/Craftman Tools😞

Getting a warranty on anything craftsman than isn't sold individually and in stock at wherever you're at is next to impossible now (in my experience, anyways). The new craftsman professional boxes aren't bad, but the cheaper ones are terrible. Sure, they might LOOK similar, but the steel is super thin, terrible drawers, terrible casters, terrible paint.
